You can use sprites right.
So i want a minuki one with darkblue where the middle is and little by little gets lighter outwards and bubbles in it?

O ya and in that sprite could it be the part where she sticks out her tounge?

One way to do it is exactly how you said, but I use another way which I don't really want to reveal. They're about the same, though. Depends on the fonts you use :3

I've always used separate layers for mine, but my results aren't as nice as yours Vick. I don't really have a good eye for blending colors.
