I DO however, have a quickie little comic about Broken Edge's attempts to turn Phoenix into more than a moving target. It doesn't go as planned.

Spoiler: Broken Edge tries to train Blue Phoenix...with mixed results....

That....is just...the greatest thing ever. Right there. XD Poor Nicky's kind of the useless one unfortunately. His skill involves drawing shoujo manga and reciting Hamlet, back to front.

*front pages* I'm going to put your fanfic art up underneath the subtag of your story, just so people understand who the pictures refer to.

Jesi's got it going on! *thumbs up* Your art and fic are all wonderful, even if P/M isn't my thing. (I am also following your work on Tegaki, just so you know. You have such a handle on how to draw with that thing... I am still floundering about trying to learn it.)

Phoenix dodging mailboxes makes me giggle. XDD;; Broken Edge FTW.

Speaking of arts, I drew a character that no one really has paid any attention to, despite the fact that he was our beloved Blue's first test of his powers!

Spoiler: And no, for once, it's not Luke.

The Kallisti Project – Samurai Arc – Chapter 4

Morning. It came in through the glass doors; pairs of socks and several old T-shirts casting strange shadows and slowly air-drying, as the drier downstairs still waited to be repaired. Any birdsong from the park was muted by a distance of many concrete floors, but the dawn chorus of the city still reached waiting ears. The roar of waking traffic was interspersed with the calls of ambulance and police sirens, and the occasional shrieking horn of a driver who hadn't had their coffee.

For someone who didn't have many mornings to his name, it was more magical than mundane; the passage of time was finally starting to mean something. Nothing could change that, not even waking up on a well sat-on couch, his feet freezing in the sallow light, blanket thrown away in a violent dream. The night terrors – waking up crying or screaming – had stopped. But he still dreamt of blood and pain, like he was being torn apart right down to his very soul.

Maybe they'd go away, maybe they'd never go away, but he was here, and he was safe and mostly warm and got regular meals, rather than the occasional leftover scrap of raw, dead animal. He remembered the look on Maya's face when he'd mentioned it, the reason he couldn't stomach meat of any kind...and how she'd gone out of her way to change the order to a veggie burger.

He'd told them nearly everything. Mr. Wright had murmured something about unlocking, and he'd told them what he'd been through. How he'd finally snapped his chains and run away; afraid of his own sudden, unnatural strength. Even the nature of his birth; rejected and separated from the man who had been Matt Engarde. But...not everything...not every detail, everything that Engarde, had said and done. He just didn't want anyone to worry about him.

Matty slowly sat up, scratching his head absently, making his auburn bed-head even more messy as he yawned. A week or so later, and he'd almost rebuilt his strength back to a normal, human level. Not even he'd realised how sick he'd been until he started feeling better; and his two superhuman feats, spurred on by necessity and adrenaline, had completely drained him.

But it had been the right thing to do, he'd reassured himself; his memories of being a hero were clearer than any others. And though Engarde had claimed it was all false, that the Nickel Samurai was just a character he'd played, for vast sums of money rather than justice...to Matty, it was real. Knowing that there was still good in the world was what had kept him going.

And right now, some of the good in the world seemed to have left early. The balcony door was slightly ajar; Mr. Wright and Maya must have left on hero business, leaving him behind of course. Thanks to one Lotta Hart (a photographer by trade, Matt Engarde had been all too familiar with) spreading rumours about Team Phoenix aiding criminals, he'd been confined to the apartment until the media storm died down. It couldn’t be too long, not with incidents happening around town that mirrored what his other self had done. The city would need another hero.

But until then, there was breakfast to be had, and cleaning up to be done. Fragments of memories told him that he’d never, ever had to clean up anything before, messes had been other people’s business. But if cleaning up meant earning a little of Mr. Wright’s trust, to show that he was doing something good on his own, though Maya had selflessly promised to guide him…

He picked up a foil takeout tray, and another.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It was the best of mornings, it was the worst of mornings. For Miles Edgeworth, it was just another average morning after an all-too-average night. Few had laid eyes on his bedroom, usually when they’d taken a wrong turn when looking for the bathroom, but all who had laid eyes on his bed had commented on how pristine it was. The sheets, neatly-folded, carefully tucked in at each corner without a single crease besmirching the silken material. The prosecutor didn’t consider it a impressive task; keeping one’s bed properly made was just a small part of a properly organised life, though the fact that he almost never slept in it these days also helped.
He certainly wasn’t proud of falling asleep at his desk…he awoke stiff and dishevelled, with each and every paper where it shouldn’t be. But, it was his own fault, his own attitude to never, ever stop pursuing a goal until the very end, that was causing such disruptions. He was starting to sound like Wright, pursuing the most hopeless cases…like the acid bath murder case. It had been more than a month since it had been shelved.
Officer Meekins had stumbled, and the whole case had crumbled like those concrete walls. Forensic evidence in the warehouse next door had been completely obliterated, first by the explosion and then by the HAZMAT teams. And Pete Reedish, their primary suspect in the case, had taken the advantage of the ensuing chaos and presumably left town. Edgeworth had been continuing his own research regardless, but he couldn’t seem to get much further…Reedish and the victim Benson Barner had once been colleagues, scientists. Both had been disgraced due to falsified results, among other misdemeanours.
And that was all he knew, and yet he couldn’t leave it alone, not until the guilty party was behind bars, paying for their crime. And he still insisted he ‘wasn’t a bloody superhero’, whenever the topic came up, even in his head. Even when he was out being a super-vigilante. One part of him felt like a hypocrite. Another was wondering why he’d actually believed Detective Gumshoe when he’d said he’d picked up a superhuman escapee on his built-in radar. Maybe the lack of sleep really was getting to him.
“I’ve know who he is, Mr. Edgeworth, sir! I can’t remember his name or his face, but…I know it’s him!” The whole scenario sounded as ridiculous as the one he’d described that day in the Prosector’s Office…until the prosecutor heard the frantic barking of a dog, and Officer Meekins running down the street in the exact direction Gumshoe had predicted. The Big Bang was strange stuff indeed, but could it really make Detective Gumshoe reliable?
The chemicals seemed to have affected what little common sense he possessed, anyway. Currently they were sneaking down a hallway in an unsecured, unguarded apartment building. His bumbling companion had almost insisted they do so. But despite feeling more of an idiot than when he was in costume, sneaking around instead in his usual cravat and dark magenta suit, at least he had talked Gumshoe out of wearing his Blue Badger costume. He never wanted to see that much spandex again, though no doubt he would in his nightmares.
“This is the place, sir…” the Detective whispered, tentatively putting his ear to the ground where he was already crouched. Edgeworth stood behind him, back straight and arms folded, eyes and thoughts both elsewhere. If someone stumbled upon the ridiculous scene, fate not only existed, but was making his existence one big running joke. “…he’s in there, alright. I can hear him walking around.” The larger man stood up slowly, like he was deliberately testing his superior’s patience. “It’s gotta be him…if there’s an escaped criminal in Mr. Wright’s apartment, he’s gotta be tied up in the closet or something!”
Caught massaging his temples with thumb and forefinger, the prosecutor nodded sagely…and stopped, eyes open and pupils like pinpricks. He couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Wright, harbouring a criminal...or being kidnapped by one, even in their line of work…it seemed as unlikely as a witness coming to court with a full written confession, and evidence they’d bagged and labelled themselves. “This is Wright’s apartment!?” he said, snapping to attention too late as Gumshoe charged at the door shoulder-on, with a triumphant “The Blue Badger always gets his man, pal!!!”
Things came dangerously close to melodrama as the Detective fell flat on his face, the door already unlocked. But this wasn’t the time to laugh at the universe’s cruel jokes. Edgeworth drew his sword – the books he’d been reading had described multiple ways of concealing a weapon, despite the questionable legality. He wasn’t a superhero, but he couldn’t call himself a decent human being if he didn’t act when action was needed.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Trouble always seemed to call at the most awkward times…no sooner had the hero saved the day, than their city was in jeopardy again. A never-ending task, like cleaning up after messy kids.

For the Blue Phoenix, it meant a few early mornings, when the incessant beeping from his earpiece (so small and inconspicuous, Phoenix had forgotten about it the previous night) came before the beeping of his alarm clock. He wasn’t much of a morning person, so he didn’t catch most of The Scientist’s rambling about Broken Edge being probably very busy in his civilian job…had he even mentioned Edgeworth? Phoenix couldn’t recall. But the words ‘incident’, ‘check it out’, and the name ‘Don Icy’ hit him like caffeine booster shots, and for once it’d been him dragging Maya out of bed.

He looked across at his sleepy sidekick, hearing something about a waste of time, caught on the wind. It hadn’t really been their most successful morning. Don Icy, the hacker who’d been disrupting computer systems and attempting to interrupt TV signals had struck again, this time plastering electronic billboards with his mark. The same blank, robot-like face, ‘DON ICY HACKS – REJECT FALSE HEROES’ rotating slowly around the edge of the circular symbol…and still no leads.

For a moment one night, he’d found himself blaming Matty for their lack of progress. He was civilised towards their guest, as any decent human being would, but…the distrust was still there. Just beneath the surface, the pent-up anger and thoughts of revenge, the part of him that constantly questioned the stranger in his home. But that was far from the root cause…following the Tonosacon mutant attack, the one person they so badly needed had withdrawn into his shell of paperwork. [And where Edgeworth goes, Gumshoe follows on a very short leash.]

That ruled out two potential detectives. Ema was hopelessly distracted by her latest potion or particle, as she’d always been since the Big Bang…he’d have to ask her about that sometime…so that ruled her out, too. And Ron and Desirée, though useful allies and fast-becoming friends of Maya and himself, were too used to being on the other side of the law to know much about detective work.

So that left the Blue Phoenix and his plucky sidekick to investigate whenever they weren’t out superheroing, all while keeping Matty’s existence under wraps ‘until the time was right’. The way things were looking, it’d be around the same time they told Pearls they weren’t an item. But they were busy, even without a case to work on; before everything changed, how had they killed all that time? The days and weeks between frantic bursts of activity…?

“Maya, down there!” Another frantic burst of activity, this time from inside their apartment – shadows darted across the room, behind the glass doors to the balcony, and they were just close enough to hear a loud THUMP. He was sure he’d locked the door – they must have kicked it in! “Come on!” he immediately pulled into a dive, his sidekick following worriedly. For different reasons, they were both thinking of the same person – Matty. Phoenix couldn’t let go of the possibility he might suddenly turn violent…when one of the shadows was suddenly thrown against the closed half of the door with another loud THUMP.

“Matty!!!” Maya immediately ran through the door as Nick forced it fully open…as his eyes adjusted to the light, he could see the room was a mess. Pizza boxes and Chinese food cartons were scattered, furniture was overturned and pushed aside but thankfully not broken…he was more thankful Pearls hadn’t been there. But where were the intruders? The one thrown against the window had since got up, but where were they now-!?

“What…the bloody hell is going on!?” an irate voice spoke up from down on the floor. It was Edgeworth, brandishing his sword, but wearing his prosecutor’s outfit, which was covered in…! Phoenix immediately rushed to help, reaching for shirt buttons with trembling fingers. “Wright, get off!” a hand slapped his own away immediately, the man looking more irritated than injured. The smell finally reached Phoenix’s nose…not a splatter of blood, but tomato sauce.

That was some relief, at least. “Edgeworth, where’s the intruder?” Now wasn’t the time to question how his fellow hero had known; he could already guess why he was here.

“Right behind you.” The man answered seriously, getting to his feet and looking at the stain in disgust, before turning that look on his ‘saviour’. “I’m surprised you didn’t notice a convicted psychopathic murderer holding a couch over his head. Or the fact that your assistant appears to be hugging him.”

Phoenix turned. Maya’s words of comfort and how-worried-she-was and how-you-should-have-called were mingling together into an incomprehensible stream as she kept her grip on Matty. Like something straight out of comic book fiction, he was holding the couch effortlessly above his head with both hands, though his slightly pink cheeks and wide eyes suggested a kitten caught scratching the furniture.

And standing right behind him with a similar ‘caught in the act’ look was Detective Gumshoe, arms shaking as he struggled with a thick-bound law book over his own head. “This…this isn’t what it looks like, pal!”

“The good detective…” Edgeworth turned to shoot a withering glare at the man “…is correct, Wright. It appears his ‘special skills’ require much more refining.” The Detective’s shoulders sank, forgetting about the book, which he fumbled the book and dropped it on the floor. Quickly, he snatched it up and busied himself trying to find its proper place in the surrounding chaos. “That man isn’t Matt Engarde, is he, Wright? Just an unfortunate lookalike…or…some sort of shapeshifter…” He watched Matty with some suspicion as he lowered the couch gently to the floor, Maya standing by him protectively, her hands bunched into fists and glowing faintly.

The attorney’s hand went to his forehead. “He’s not…but at the same time, he sort of…is.” Phoenix’s hand covered his eyes; he hadn’t been looking forward to explaining this. He could feel impatient grey eyes on him, but he needed just a little time, just a minute or two, to gather his thoughts. Few people had as much emotional control as Edgeworth, able to go from teeth and fists clenched to calm, collected, and slightly smug in a blink of an eye.

“This thing…*fffsssshhhttt*…on. It is- *fffft* …testing, all your base are belong to…*shhhh*” His head jerked up suddenly; a robotic-sounding voice in his earpiece, broken up by static. The other Team Phoenix members had similar looks of confusion. Gumshoe had even removed the tiny piece of technology and was examining it, muttering something about loose whatsits. But even if there was a loose whatsit or a faulty thingamajig, Ema had said the signal was so scrambled nobody should be able to hack it…

Then, more static, coming from all directions! The buzzing sound was deafening as the TV, knocked to a jaunty angle in the scuffle, suddenly turned on to show a screen full of black and white fuzz. The monitor and speakers of his old computer had come to life only to do the same, and the radio in the tiny kitchenette was spewing even more white noise. Edgeworth mouthed something, covering his ears, his voice drowned out…when just as suddenly, there was silence.

And, on the screen…a white background with a circular robot-like face, devoid of expression. Slowly rotating around the edge of it was a slogan…Don Icy again. ‘REJECT FALSE HEROES’ had a much more sinister meaning, if they were trying to hack Team Phoenix’s communicators.

“Salutations, people of LA.” The voice was as flat and expressionless as the face on screen. Although it had a distinctly male tone, whoever was talking was taking no chances when it came to giving away their identity. “I am Don Icy.” It really came from everywhere; not just the TV and radio, but the earpieces as well.

“I have been attempting to contact you for some time. At last, I have succeeded.” They’d hijacked every signal, every piece of electronic equipment…he pulled out his cell phone, as did Edgeworth. Both screens showed a tiny version of Don Icy’s logo, the same voice emerging from the speaker.

“This is a warning. For the good of the city, for the good of LA.” It was even outside, being broadcast over every loudspeaker and PA system. People were stopping in the street and getting out of their cars, the mysterious voice coming through every radio, the picture flashing onto TV screens in store windows.

“The truth will be revealed, and you will be rejected by the city you have deceived until now.” Matty, who would normally have a ‘deer in the headlights’ reaction to being touched, now clung to Maya. “A true hero will rise above and defeat all evil. Be prepared…” Static flashed across the screen as the image flickered, and the TV screen – everything with a screen – suddenly turned black. Everything in the room seemed much darker. “…Team Phoenix.”

Silence descended. The cyber-graffiti had looked harmless enough, just another person trying to get their political voice heard by shouting the loudest, like the neverending protests and debates and speeches on mutants that still plagued the news. But now…“reject false heroes” had a much more sinister meaning. Team Phoenix was the target, and the one aiming at them could be anywhere and everywhere at once, if only virtually…

Someone cleared their throat. It wasn’t until Phoenix saw his reflection in the empty TV screen that he realised he’d been staring at nothing, and a dark-rimmed gaze was trained on the back of his head. That was right…when it came to Edgeworth and his work, there was only Edgeworth and his work. No time of day and especially no current events penetrated his paperwork cocoon. With a tired look, like he was looking forward to yet another day on the same court case, the prosecutor sighed and reached into his pocket.

“Since I can assume this explanation will take a while…” with a bitter smile, he produced a delicate silk bag tied with a thin ribbon. “…I’ve taken the liberty of providing my own tea leaves.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Teeth gritted, a pair of slender hands gripped the next rung on the ladder. Each step was slippery and dangerous, thanks to the water quietly dripping from the twisted metal. It couldn't be called a roof...not something that looked like a post-modern sculpture and acted as a rather effective rain-catcher, or at least until the water dripped through the various shrapnel holes.
Ema brushed some drops off her hair. What water didn't end up on the forgotten ladder, or formed a large puddle at the bottom of the yawning hole in the floor, was dripping on her head. She'd brought every piece of forensic kit the internet and a police salary could provide, and yet she'd neglected to bring an umbrella. Even science couldn't have predicted a light shower, partly indoors, on a cloudless day.
Her boots finally found wet, solid concrete. She shouldn't complain, really. Thanks to her police ID, getting into the site of the Big Bang, the Hazmat crews long packed up and gone, had been easy. And of course, briefly mentioning Mr. Edgeworth had given things a push in the right direction, even earning her a salute or three as the officers fumbled with their donut boxes. It was strange, how lightly guarded the place seemed to be. The warehouse in the city had become the elephant in the room.
Turning to face the underground, she could see why...from a forensic point of view, it was a very boring elephant. The Bang chemicals were all but gone...sprayed with chemical foam, sucked up, loaded onto trucks with all the broken barrels and crates and carted off to be destroyed. But she had to hold onto that hope, that one day she might have real superpowers. That she might be able to fight alongside Broken Edge, that she might even make a cure for the countless Bang victims who hid their faces behind names like 'Don Icy'.
Taking out her flashlight, she flicked the switch with a flourish, and scoured the area. When she'd last been here, there'd been no indication of a basement...if this even was a basement. Though the warehouse floor was solid concrete, she could see, making a kind of dirt sandwich, the roof of the 'basement' was brick. An arched ceiling, curved walls covered in a thin film of slime and years of neglect and decay, it was almost like a tunnel of some sort. But the only logical reason for tunnels under a city was...
The Scientist's hand covered her mouth as she turned a vivid green; the mood ring formula still hadn't quite worn off. A sewer...an abandoned sewer, unused and forgotten for years, but...she tried not to point her flashlight downwards. If she was standing in anything other than water...there were some things even scientists didn't want to know. She considered turning back, just learning to live with playing second fiddle to the real heroes...redirecting her torch just revealed a large pile of bricks, obviously from the roof collapsing.
But...there was something different. Another pile of bricks, newer bricks, without the unidentified slime, and some of them were still part of a wall! Her eyes glittered greedily as she approached...yes, it was an entrance of some sort, blocked off after the sewer was built. But why? If the tunnel just wasn't being used, why bother-
-Her finger went to her ear. There was a buzzing sound, and snippets of speech, like a radio being tuned. Interference? They hadn't tested them underground, that was true.
She took another step towards the collapsed wall, and peered inside. The flashlight's beam reflected off the surface of water, about knee-level, maybe going even deeper. The place was flooded, maybe by a leaking pipe...she could hear a roar in her ear, like crashing water. But even as she backed up, the sound grew louder and more insistent....not water, static! Static in the earpiece...did someone know she was here? Were they trying to block the signal, so she couldn't call for help!?
“Salutations, people of LA. I am Don Icy.” Ema almost ripped out the tiny gadget then and there. They were hacking the earpieces! But she'd worked so hard with Mrs. DeLite to perfect them, making sure the signal was secure, there was no way!
“I have been attempting to contact you for some time.” came the electronic voice again, not just from the earpiece, but inside her pocket. Flipping open her bubblegum pink phone, Don Icy's logo greeted her. "At last, I have succeeded.” Immediately, the gears in her head started turning, like when she was struck with an idea and somehow knew exactly what to do, like her thoughts were thinking thoughts.
“This is a warning.” In the earpiece, in her cellphone; the signal Don Icy was sending must be strong enough to override anything with a receiver. "For the good of the city, for the good of LA..." The rest of the signal seemed muted as she climbed the ladder, the little imaginary gears and cogs inside her scientific brain whirring, going crazy with new thoughts and theories. Even if Don Icy was some kind of super-genius, ordinary hardware couldn't create a signal to override anything electronic. They'd need a powerful computer, a supercomputer!
"...you will be rejected by the city..." the message continued. That was right, they were only addressing Los Angeles, so they had to be somewhere in the city. But who in LA would-? "Be prepared..." She scrambled up the the ladder. There was one possibility...if their security had been hacked, then yes, it was possible! "...Team Phoenix."
"AHH!" the shock hit, but she quickly regained her grip. Hoisting herself up and out of the forgotten sewer, Ema re-directed her glare to the face staring mockingly back from her cellphone. "You..." There was no response; the face simply vanished into blackness. The Scientist returned it to the depths of her bag, which she hoisted over one shoulder as she began running.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Elsewhere in the city, someone was far, far above the mass panic that was no doubt ensuing below. Both physically, and in every other way, he was above those human cattle. A pair of feet rested on an ornate desk; stretched and changed into something not human, the ball and partly-fused toes of each foot thick with city dirt. Clawed heels had already left a crosshatch of scratches in the wooden surface, from the owner's fidgeting.

The rest of Engarde was sprawled in a high-backed office chair, his half-formed snout revelling in the scent of soft leather and fear. "Heh heh..." he chuckled to himself, running long fingers though his hair. The thrill of the hunt had been fun, watching the prey run from the new top predator.

It had been hard to resist thinning the herd, picking off the weak and slow in the stampede to escape the building. But he had to wait. Narrowing a reptilian eye, he gazed into the brandy he'd acquired from Mr. Nameless Executive's secret stash. Waiting was boring. He didn't like to be kept waiting.

But it wouldn't be much longer, would it? He grinned at his reflection, and placed the glass on the armrest, running a claw around the edge with a sound like nails on a chalkboard. Team Phoenix would hear his message, they'd start looking...eventually they'd trace the chaos to here, it's epicentre. He'd get his lesser half delivered straight to him, with a side order of an attorney who was really starting to push that dumb luck of his.

Calling himself the Blue Phoenix...who did he really think he was up against!? At the very least he could have had the brains to make it interesting! "Rrrrrrgh-!" A low growl escaped him as his face twisted into a snarl at the memory. All those memories, of that dark and windowless cell, his plan ruined by an idiot's good fortune-! His claws dug into the desk, while his tail wrapped around the bottle on the floor, roughly jerking upwards.

Pouring out the last of it down to the final few drops, he downed the amber liquid in one swift motion. A half-shudder, half-sigh came as it pleasantly burned his throat. Reclining further into the chair, in the chair, he let the bottle slip, and Engarde closed his eyes lazily to the sound of tinkling glass.

If he hadn't already been snoring, he would have noticed the door carefully and quietly shut itself.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Okay Ema..." the young woman told herself, pressing her back against the wall to catch her breath. Since leaving the Big Bang site and it's mysterious sewer, she'd run most of the way, then quickly hailed a cab when she remembered she had no idea where the place actually was.
And when she'd looked up at the building, she'd wondered how she'd ever missed it. Blue Screens Inc. the letters read, on the side of a skyscraper covered in reflective blue panels. A skyscraper which seemed eerily quiet; no receptionist at the desk. No security guards, just cameras with no-one watching, donuts half-eaten. No people at all.
And now she'd reached the CEO's office, she knew exactly why. She bunched her fists, her eyes tightly shut beneath her goggles. "Calm down. It's just...it's just a..." she peered around the edge of the door again, and made a muted squeaking noise as the sleeper shifted, an ugly snort echoing throughout the empty room.
She hid herself again, pulling her knees up to her chest as she thought. She was tempted to finish that sentence with ‘dinosaur’, but there was no doubt the creature in the chair had once been human. Its whole body shape looked wrong; a sculpture not yet finished, a body not entirely corrupted by once-dormant DNA. But did she really want to stay and find out how much human was left?
She glanced at the claw marks on the door, remembering the complete lack of other people, even burly security guards. […Or how little?] Nervously, her hand went to her goggles, lifting them up and off her eyes. If she could somehow sneak past…she hoped Don Icy hadn’t left the building already. Taking a first step in front of the door, she hoped even harder that they weren’t working together.
Or else, at any moment…she took another step, thoughts of worst-case scenarios spiralling out of control. The lizard-man’s head moved, a pink tongue hanging over jagged incisors, and immediately The Scientist’s hand flew to her bag. She’d meant to save her new gadgets to show Mr. Edgeworth, but…if she had to…she pulled out something that felt about right.
And something fell. She covered her mouth, suppressing a gasp as the gel-filled capsule burst on the ground with a quiet ‘pop’. [Pleasedon’twakeup, pleasedon’twakeup, please-!]
Ema’s shoulders slumped in relief. No response from the sleeper. Slightly more confident she’d be home free, she stepped forward and - CRUMP. Slowly, she turned her head to look behind her, a solitary shoe stuck to the floor by a small puddle of clear liquid.
Sprawled on the ground, she could already hear slow, awkward footsteps right behind her, nostrils drawing in her scent with each sniff. “Snf…snf…hnnnnn…” even behind the door, she could actually hear him grin.
“Why…why did it have to be the glue capsules!?” she despaired, scrambling to her feet and breaking into a run. The young woman didn’t stop to look over her shoulder; whether the monster in pursuit was panting or laughing, it was close enough for her to hear, and that could never be a good thing!
“Take…take this!” Still running as she reached into her bag, she blindly threw a mix of capsules over her shoulder. There was an angry roar as one or two got a lucky hit…even with inhuman strength, expanding foam and sticky glue should at least slow him down a bit, right?
“Keep running, little mouse!” A grating, raspy voice came. Each word seemed to say ‘just surrender and I’ll kill you more quickly’, dripping with mocking confidence.
Instead, Ema left the monster to struggle…and didn’t realise her mistake until it was too late. She’d already slammed the door, having instinctively ducked into a room upon seeing the word ‘security’. The security guards had the right idea when they’d run away along with everyone else…that lizard-thing would know where she was, he could hear her heartbeat, smell her fear!
The Scientist slapped her own cheek sharply. [No! There has to be a way out of this! Think!] Kneeling on the ground, she dug through the contents of her bag, unzipping pockets and taking things out. Her precious Luminol and fingerprint powder were completely useless here. There were more glue capsules and foam capsules, but a villain never fell for the same trick twice…
“Here mousey-mousey…” BANG. Ema squeaked again in response, hiding under the desk just like her new namesake...a door, close to hers, had just been kicked in. “Won’t you come out…” BANG – closer this time. “…Come out and play…” BANG – closer again.
He knew where she was, he just was toying with her. Soon, he’d kick down the right door, and she’d be sitting there defenceless. “Unless-!” she murmured, and pulled out a small Tupperware box, and opened it. Inside were more capsules, but in a size and shape more typical of medicine, like a tube with rounded ends. Each one was filled with tiny spheres glowing a pale orange. Her unfinished project...she was lucky she’d scooped it up along with her finished gadgets.
Taking one out, she examined a pill between her thumb and forefinger, the little black dots buzzing with energy. It was a huge risk, swallowing something that could have such unpredictable effects. BANG. - the door buckled, but held firm for just a second; and Ema decided being eaten alive was probably much worse than what the particles might do. Closing her eyes, she threw the pill into her mouth and swallowed.
One more kick, and the door crashed onto the floor. Leaning on the side of the doorframe to support his half-formed body, Engarde narrowed his crimson eyes and peered around. One little snack wouldn’t be noticed…and he knew the prey was in here, he could smell its desperation…but where?
Unknown to him, from under the desk, Ema watched him cautiously. Seizing her chance, she squeezed into the gap between the desk and the wall. The danger wasn’t over yet, but her new invention had sort of worked! Pym particles…the discovery of fictional scientist Hank Pym, previously the stuff of comic books…they were at her fingertips, shunting her excess mass into a parallel dimension.
Even with her brilliant scientific mind filling in the writer’s glaring gaps and faults, she was still surprised it had worked. Maybe if she’d used positively charged particles-she pressed her back closer to the wall, and took a few steps away from the gap. Her pursuer had shifted to all fours, to better search for his quarry, as she physically shook, barely breathing in case it heard her.
“Snf…snf…” A small cry struggled to escape. That horrible snout right near her, claws deftly moving across each surface under the desk, checking for traces of a suddenly-vanished prey. If only she’d grown to giant size like she’d planned; she wouldn’t be the one hiding! But even the human intelligence that remained in the poor thing’s head couldn’t keep it occupied for that long. Ema closed her eyes, a cold sweat making her skin tingle. Surely…surely it would lose interest and move on soon.
But it was hard to stay calm. The fear was making her feel sick, like the room was moving, shaking up and down…but…she opened her eyes as the sound of sniffing moved away...it was moving. Up a bit, then down a bit…that cold sweat wasn’t going away either. And faint traces of orange energy flickered in and out of existence; she knew it was molecular transfer, but it looked like it was almost trying to get attention…
“Oh…they’re unstable…” the Scientist said in a paralysed monotone. Halfway between fear and her own rapid deductions, she hadn’t noticed she was getting even smaller. In just a few seconds, she’d shrunk a few more precious inches, from rat-size to mouse size. And a few seconds was all it took for a clawed hand to grip the side of the desk, pulling it away from the wall.
There was no ‘hello there’ or ‘lunchtime’... Engarde didn’t go for one liners. He didn’t even question how she’d gotten so small. The brandy was helping to fuel the fire in his belly, the rage and the hunger, the part of him that was less human and more superhuman.
He lunged for her, mouth agape.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

“So that’s how it is, is it?” Edgeworth murmured, a look of serious thought on his face. His fingers forming a bridge as he set both cup and saucer down on the coffee table, now cleared and uprighted. He was the only one who had partaken of a drink; tea, his one vice, to steady his nerves for the impending explanation.

He was almost starting to lose hope of waking up from this ludicrous nightmare. Matt Engarde was not only sitting in the same room as him, but practically clinging to Miss Fey like a small child. Her suspicious glare switched between Detective Gumshoe, currently re-positioning the television, and the prosecutor in the armchair.

“As far as we know.” Phoenix confirmed, emotions written all over his face as usual. Edgeworth wasn’t along in suspecting the ‘innocent’ doppelganger. Monsters like Engarde were born rather than made; was it really possible for a manipulative psychopath to be anything but that?

Then again, there was that naivety in his plan; the childish notion of pinning the blame on someone else, and who would question such a little angel? That tendency to rely on others for every want and need. The false persona he’d created to serve that purpose. If that part of Matt Engarde had been removed, literally excised from the man’s body and mind, what about the other part? Had it survived the separation? Without that childishness holding it back, what kind of monster could they stand to face?

“There ya go, pal.” Gumshoe said proudly, standing to one side as to let the others admire his handiwork in moving the TV back to where it was. “Should work good as new. Or something like that.” Grabbing the remote control, the TV screen flickered momentarily then burst into life. Some of the tension in the room dissipated as Don Icy’s logo failed to appear.

Instead, it went straight to the local news…and the tension started to rise again. “-vestigate reports of a disturbance downtown.” The newscaster interjected. “Our man on the scene is John Jackson, how are things down there?”

“Thankyou Jack…” a man appeared, the same flustered reporter from the day of the Big Bang. Behind him was a skyscraper, covered in distinctive blue panels. “The source of the disturbance appears to be the Blue Screens Inc. building…the same company that almost brought the world the MC Bomber virus. Apparently nearly everyone in the building has been given the day off today, and security guards are nowhere to be seen, but that still doesn’t explain what’s going on up here…”

The man gestured to the large screen mounted on the front of the building, flanked by two smaller screens, all three normally meant for showing product demonstrations and advertisements. Instead…the camera focused its lens…there was what looked like black and white security tape footage, being played on a loop. “…Whether the footage is genuine has yet to be seen, but it’s rumoured that this and the ‘Don Icy’ cyber-graffiti could be part of a new viral advertising campaign…”

Edgeworth simply stared at the screen in disbelief. There was a girl who looked a lot like Miss Skye, facing off against some kind of horrible deformed creature in an endless loop. It seemed to be more comfortable on four legs, crawling around on the floor, when Ema suddenly appeared. Seizing its chance, it pounced; then a short burst of static before the tape looped again.

“Matty! Matty…” Maya was immediately kneeling on the floor; the doppelganger had suddenly collapsed, sliding off the couch and onto the floor. His eyes were fixed on the screen…the best way to describe it was like a deer in the headlights, a man who’d just seen death racing towards him.

He shook, drawing ragged breaths, struggling to say something as the terrible vision faded back to the sterility of the news studio. Only the spirit medium seemed to understand, and even then she seemed shocked. “Nick, that’s him! That was Engarde! Matty…he said he’d become a monster…” the sentence trailed off, her hand going to her mouth as it sunk in.

“Well he meant it literally. And it appears Miss. Skye has been caught while doing some investigations of some sort.” Everyone turned towards the prosecutor as he stood up. People were indeed difficult, but he knew enough to at least read those looks on their faces. “If I may make this clear, this doesn’t mean I accept this…vigilante role I’ve been thrust into. It was never my choice to join in your little ‘superhero’ games.”

Edgeworth’s hand went to his heart as he thought of Miss Skye, in danger. His hand clasped the replica defence attorney’s badge concealed under his jacket lapel. Like that day when he’d pulled her away from that toxic sludge, he wasn’t a hero, but he couldn’t possibly forgive himself if something happened to her.

Thrusting his hand skywards, there was a brief flash of light as his outfit morphed, and Broken Edge pulled his red scarf over his nose and mouth. “Detective. Use that ability of yours to locate Miss Skye within the building.” He glanced towards Matty, just a cowering figure on the floor. Despite having just picked up the couch like it was nothing, he looked small and scared, still unable to make a decision for himself. “…The rest of us will go on ahead.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Back to being tiny, Ema quickly ducked behind a curtain. Thanks to the unstable particles she’d sprung back to normal size just long enough to hit some sort of big red button on the console. That was the thing about big red buttons – they had to do something, or else they wouldn’t be big and red. You could trust a big red button.
But from what she could hear, she was wondering whether the something the button had done was good or bad. She could hear another voice in the room as the door opened...though whether it was male or female, old or young, she couldn’t tell. At her diminutive height, normal-sized voices sounded slow and deep, and she didn’t want to stick her head out and check, in case it met the jaws of another lizard-person.
But what she could do was listen to what they were saying. “I saw what you did; I can see all the cameras from in there! You…you were trying to eat her! You’re not a hero at all! You…you-you lied to me…”
“Aw, no, no way, dude…” if that was the lizard-man, his tone had completely changed. It was almost syrupy, each word far too eager to please any ear that would care to listen. “...it’s just one of their tricks, the villains' tricks, Team Phoenix’s tricks.”
The voice lowered to a hiss. Whispering? Maybe in the other person’s ear? “You believe me, right? You gotta believe me…” Maybe, if they were both distracted…she could look. She’d know what she’d be up against, whether she should really take the risk of calling for help when someone could be listening. Getting on her knees, she carefully edged towards the sound, and pulled the relatively gigantic curtain aside with one hand. “You gotta trust me…’cause if you don’t trust me…”
It happened quickly; a sudden flash of movement, like a cobra strike. The only scream was one like a mouse squeak from behind the curtain; with no time to react, the other person just stiffened suddenly as incisors penetrated their shoulder.
A pink tongue cleaned the teeth’s handiwork, lapping up any last traces of blood. The small tears in his victim’s shirt remained, but beneath that, the wounds miraculously healed themselves. Their posture was different, slightly slouched, just waiting for a command, a direction. He should’ve just made this one a slave from the start, but he liked to keep things interesting.
You are nothing. Now be a good little appetiser and go finish up. The main course is about to arrive.”
SCARY F'ING DINOSAUR IS F'ING SCARY.
*cowers in fear*
For serious. You already know what I have to say about this, but Engardesaurus has suddenly made the abrupt transition from "Haha, look, it's the awesome Engardesaurus" to "HOLY SHIT IT'S THE ENGARDESAURUS RUN LIKE HELL JUST RUN AND DON'T LOOK BACK BECAUSE HE'LL JUST EAT YOU OR POISON YOU OR DFJSDLAFJDSA"
Congrats on making a scary villain. :3
OH HAY, NOW THAT CHAPTER EIGHT IS UP, I CAN POST SOME OF MY CUTSEY ART.
I know our lovely new Jesi has been posting her Phoenix/Maya art, so now it is my turn to show you whom I like to ship Maya with in this fic! (And only in this fic. XD Wouldn't work so well otherwise.)
Spoiler: Ai ai ai, Where's my Samurai~
Image
Yes, this was drawn to the song "Butterfly."
Spoiler: This was actually a present for Plode
Image
Because she put the idea in my head. X3 She admitted that they have some cutsey moments, like in Chapter 8... When they were hugging. X3333 Just cute! I love them!
They're just cute. XD;; Yeah, I drew these a while back, but I didn't feel comfortable putting them up until after they started being cute. It was mostly just a "Hm, I bet they would be sweet together" thought than anything with actual basis. XD; But hey look, now they're hugging and he seems to trust her, so they'll just go around cutely and... Yeah. Of course, though, this is all speculation and personal preference. =D Just what Sh1n1 thinks would be cute. My Kallisti pairings are all mine, as, like Plode and Mercs say, most of it is going to be left up to reader choice in the area of "who loves whom."
I still want to see more of your P/M stuff, Jesi! P/M isn't my thing, but it's cute when you draw it.
Did I mention that the Engardesaurus is scary beyond all reason?
EDIT: Forgot one more piece of art not related to shipping.
Spoiler: Broken Edge's other power?
And yes, Edgey talks to dolphins, but he's been able to do that without any Kallisti power for a while now.
....Oh my god. I can't believe I never followed Sakuro's signature before--actually, let me say a few things.
Firstly, I'm SO glad you didn't do a sonic/sound-related thing for Meekins. ...I mean, I suppose you sort of did, but not volume-related. :D
Secondly, I LOVE YOU FOR WRITING GOODMAN IN!!!!!!!!!! DDDD': *TACKLEHUGS YOU* No, seriously--that is...just SO awesome. D': I kind of died myself when I first heard that "man in the white coat" and then the "fedora" line. Wow. Just...I'm so overwhelmed right now. I feel kind of crying or something. Silly overemotional Goodman fangirl...
Thirdly, I love your writing style and the way you're directing the plot. While a couple pairings were, I felt, overstressed within the plot *snackoo'd*...I suppose that's simply how most fics go, and I'm just not used to them. XD Although, you HAVE softened me towards Maggey x Gumshoe...I used to be veryveryvery heavily Meekins x Maggey, and while MxG was sweet, I felt it was too...mainstream, which repelled me.
But I seriously don't remember reading a fanfic this awesome in a LOOOOOOOOOOOONG time. Or a book in general, actually. I guess I need to start reading again. XDD I used to be SUCH a bookworm...And I still am, I just haven't found any good books lately... It's been a while since I could remember the events that I read THAT vividly, on the verge of actual memories or sight...Truly. Epic.
Oh gawd. MUST DRAW FANART. O____O
I think you've delayed the release of the comic. It. Is. THAT. Awesome. I just read about 8 chapters in a row. *ultra-obsessed*
Oh, and the thought of Blassy drawing Yaoi scares me. Actually, Yaoi in general scares me. >_>;;
I'd better finish reading the rest TOMORROW...It's getting really late here...>_>
Edit: Oh, and I almost forgot: I almost exploded, imploded, and died from the jazzhands thing. Seriously, I couldn't stop laughing. SIGQUOTE TIME
...*hands award for most energetic reply I think we've had ever*
Thank you for all your kind words! <3 I'm glad you enjoyed it so much. We like to put in a lot of minor characters (there are more to come) just since they deserve just as much thunder as everyone else.
We're not TOO overbearing on the pairings, are we? We honestly try not to be, and if you want to mentally ship Maggey with Meekins throughout the course of the story, that's perfectly fine with us. We do have a few relatively mainstream pairings referenced (and we only really did it because it is depicted as canon...)
Anyway, stick with us regardless of what we imply, since we promise not to disappoint in other areas.
and also yaoi is very sexy. >D
Can't wait to see fanart and hear the rest of your reactions!
Mercs, from my point of view, while there are some noticable references to pairings, I don't really think it's anything too bad. And besides, I'd still read this no matter what pairings you put in it. Though I may draw the line if you pair Engardesaurus with anyone. >:
BECAUSE THIS STORY IS THAT EPIC. :D
And yaoi is very sexy.
HELLO ~N.
YOU FOUND ME ON DEVIANTART AND I FEEL I MUST WELCOME YOU TO OUR KALLISTI FAMILY.
NO THIS IS NOT A CULT.
WE PREFER TO CALL IT A "CLUB."
But yes. You remind me, I have to draw some PK Meekins and PK Goodman fanart! (Along with like fifty other characters, but I've been meaning to draw those two for a while.)
Engardesaurus deserves love too! Maybe he and Sal-Vo the Slime can get together and have creepy giant monster lurves.
And a cookie and a million internets to anyone who catches my little reference there.
Now, then... *deep inhale*
*index finger*
THE PAIRINGS IN KALLISTI ARE MAINLY LEFT UP TO FAN DESCISION, AS NOT MANY WILL BE EXPLICITLY STATED. AND EVEN THOSE THAT ARE WILL BE DONE SO IN A WAY THAT IT WILL SUBTLY MAKE YOU GROW A TOLERANCE SO THAT YOU CAN STILL ENJOY THE FIC BECAUSE THE WRITING IS SO WONDERFUL.
(Oh hay there Maggey/Meekins fan. =D Yeah, Gumshoe/Maggey's not really my thing either, don't worry. I'm more fond of it now because of PK, but I thought she and Meekins were just too cute together. X3)
NONONO BECAUSE I WAS WORKING ON THEM FIIIIRST
AAAAGH D:
Lol, joking. *Shot for horrible joke*
Oh, and...I don't really support Maggey/Meekins SO much anymore. After playing JFA, there's quite a distinct...difference. I mean, they're both energetic police officers with bad luck, but that's...about.......it. XD
So, yeah, I'm kind of MaggeyGumshoe now.
......Kind of. Still too mainstream for me, but I think a combination of getting-used-to-it and more Kallisti and fanfiction and fanarts will do it.
Also, I'm almost done with the FAMOUSJAZZHANDSMOMENT!fanart. I just need to make it into a banner. :D
Alright, I finished the first thing. I'm not too happy with it, but I kind of low-opacity-brush-rushed it...I still have to draw the comic page that was due yesterday...>_>
Anyway, I've never drawn Edgey before, so...don't freak out if he looks weird. D:
I didn't get the reference, but I, I, I think you broke my brain a little with that image right there. o_e;
And Engardesaurus makes me want to hide under my couch anyway.
In other words, fantastic chapter. :D
...dear god, did we get love...
I sincerely love you guys. This is probably the most dedicated fanbase I think I've ever been a part of. I don't think I've ever been more proud to be a part of something this big, especially for an idea that I was told was stupid before I met Plode. Thank you so much for believing in us, and being our inspiration for something like this...the fact that we're all linked in people's sigs, that we needed to make a FANART section...
I honestly thought I'd never see anything like this with something I'm involved with writing.
You guys are amazing.
~N's picture is wonderful. It makes me snerk and giggle every time I see it. XD That was the scene that actually drew me out of lurking, too...
And we love you too, Mercs. You know that, right? <33 We're just as happy to be a part of your fanbase as you are to have a fanbase at all! Now doesn't that make you feel good? =D
I DIDN'T IGNORE YOUR PICTURE D: I'm sorry, I was very tired last night and I did notice it, but them was overwhelmed by like the forty six thousand other posts with it. It made me crack up - that line was one of Plode's lines, and it seems everyone likes it.
Edgeworth looks pretty on spot in your picture xD He seems to get shocked and confused a lot.
I need to front page a lot of stuff...I BE BACK.
Gah, sorry about not saying anything for so long. The last few days have been eventful...lots of parties to go to with it being the end of exams. I feel quite popular, ha. XD
Anyway. I think Mercs has already summed up what I think about the fanbase. We did get love. <3 And a big fanbase means this could be the first multi-chapter fic I ACTUALLY FINISH. :cody-shock2: Drawings actually help a lot since they can inspire me, or give me a better idea of appearance rather than what's in my head. And even if you can't draw (like me) words of support are very much appreciated. :3
One thing I'm a little surprised at, though, is the lack of guesses/questions this time round. There doesn't seem to be as many. Well except for people guessing who Don Icy is. Seems I did a good job of being subtle, for once. *ninja* Image
And lastly, before I forget, welcome to the fray Haibara~n. I love your sig banner/pic. XDD Edgey's expressions are priceless sometimes. And I'm glad you liked my line, of course.
Much love, guys. I'm on my summer vacation now, so hopefully chapters should start arriving more regularly. <3
I finally got the chance to start reading this yesterday! :Keko-hands: I'm only on Arc Zero - Chapter 2, but for now I must say that super-attorneys are super-awesome 8D
You guys have seriously done a great job :redd: There are so many things that I want to comment on, but there are SO MANY!
As I was reading the first chapter I was trying to convince my friend to read it, so I told her that Phoenix could set chairs on fire. She said something to the effect of "Only chairs?" and then went on a spiel about how Nick could only defeat supervillains after he got them to sit down and start monologuing. I think I have her convinced to read it, though. Maya's Psychonauts-style TK immediately caught her attention, and I accidentally told her that Edgey had Oreo-senses. :nick:
*le gasp* Jesidres you're on here too?! *fansqueal* I love your Discworld art!
Haha, thanks Mercury. Out of like, the three threads I've made, yes, I think you've been to all of them (STALKER MUCH). And anyone who hasn't had an asthma attack yet should do so now. /shot
I just got home from school so I haven't had time to read further other than to refresh my memory of chapter 2 (I'm so pathetic) :sadshoe: So does Meekins seriously have mind-control? Because simply the fact that it's Meekins who has it would make that the best superpower ever :redd:
I agree with Marshmello. XDD
Oh, and that reminds me: I'm almost done with drawing out the Goodman and Meekins fanarts. Now I just have to wait for the weekend so I can Photoshop them. :D
Aw, *cases the joint for Dulla and WhiteElephant* I luffs you too :edgy:
Finished Arc Zero (+Lady Luck) :redd: Sha-weeeeeeet!
"Is he doing jazz hands at the camera?!" almost cracked me up as much as imagining Edgey's subsequent demonstration. You rock. So, so much.
PS - My friend wants to know what Pess' superpower is.
