Gimp doesn't have any viruses, but it can crash sometimes.
At least the new versions. But It's still pretty rare thing to happen.
Only if you try to open a massive picture in a hurry.
I use Gimp, though...

I personally prefer Photoshop Elements 5.0's interface, it seems a little tricky for me to need a seperate window for the tools...
I also find it slightly easier to add transparency with it, because when I was editing something on GIMP once, I used Color to Alpha, and it destroyed some of the other color. :larry:

The problem with Photoshop is, you have to pay for it. GIMP is free, which is a plus on its side, but I have too much trouble with GIMP and don't really use it unless Photoshop's on the fritz...

Colour to alpha removes the colour you choose from the whole picture, including colours that it's a part of. You want to use the magic wand tool :godot:

Excellent tutorial. I've already gotten to work on a sprite sheet and a bit of animation. I do have one problem though. At one point the sprite pulls on her hair (at least its supposed to look like that), so her arm moves a bit. When I do transparency, you can see where her arm was previously...http://i43.tinypic.com/2djqatl.jpg There's the picture if I wasn't clear enough. Is there any way to fix this?

When animating, every frame contains every layer of the animation, but for the animation to work cleanly each frame should only have one layer visible. If it's still showing her position from a previous frame, that means that you have more than one layer visible in that frame. Simply find the layer you want for that frame and set all of the layers but that one to invisible.

All these, paint, paintshop and gimp...Pretty much same,
but the layer is different.

To be honest...That's propably the only reason I gimp only.

You asked for it...

Linkage.

It's not exactly a tutorial, since there's no narration and it's only 30 seconds long, but w/e. If doing that doesn't help, I'm not sure what else to do. Tweening frames might create the problem you're describing, so I'd check and make sure.

I'm not sure, but if you're using GIMP, after the frame, put in:
Code:
(replace)

That should work.

Yes I am using GIMP. (Sorry I didn't mention that earlier. :sadshoe: ) I'll give that a try. Thanks.

EDIT: Ah! It works! Thank you very much. I really should've mentioned that I was using GIMP. Sorry about that Marshmello. Thanks for trying.

EDIT2: Yeah. New problem. It works in the program, but when I saved it and uploaded it to the internet, it went back to showing all the layers.

Personally, I use Gimp for every graphical work I do.

I like the interface, it has the right tools for more clean work (and easy work), and the free-select tool is point-to-point. It's much easier to select the exact pixels I want when I can point-to-point. Take my avatar and signature for example.
They were made by...
Spoiler:
...selecting a Godot from his sheet, the prosecution bench, and the whatever-it-is behind it.
Image

Image

Image
(Open as Layers is a tool to love)
Image
I then proceeded to take a Gundam head I'd made (in Gimp) previously from its image
Image
and I scaled, overlaid, and rotated it to fit Godot's head scale and position.
Image

Image

Image
At this point, I had 4 layers, each with transparency where I needed it.
Image
I went to the Godot layer with the eraser and went mad with it, erasing so his hair and visor didn't poke through.
Image

This is where things got complex.

The next thing I did was make the Gundam head layer invisible, by clicking the eye on its layer marker.
Image
From there, I selected the border of Godot's collar and tie, and let the selection run down, all willy-nilly.
Image
I made the Gundam head layer visible, again, and erased everything in the selection, giving the appearance that he actually had a Gundam head and neck running down below his clothing.
Image
Of course, there was still work to be done. I only just realized how far off the 2 were at chin, so I made the Gundam layer 60% opaque and moved it so the chins met up. This also made the neck a lot better. I then erased the meeting point of neck and collar again. I also got rid of the excess neck outside the clothing.
Image

Image

Image
It simplified again after that. I pulled in and scaled the Objection and put it in the corner and made a text layer.

And now, I've made this image 3 times, all because I stupidly forgot to save a project file. (.xcf in Gimp)
Once for the signature, then again, for the avatar, then again for the tutorial. Oh well, it's not hard or time-consuming, anyway.

Gimp also really helps if you wanna get whole areas recolored. It even affects shading appropriately. Unfortunately, the tool, Colorize, is kinda hard to get right. Though, when mastered, it's great for this. Coupled with the Free-Select in Gimp, it's my favorite way to do anything.

Side Note: I cut the left part of the image out, so it would fit for my avatar.

Apologies for having so many images (16) in a first post.

Double-Post for a tutorial:

How to Recolor in GIMP

Okay, so, by popular demand, I've decided to make a tutorial on how to recolor in GIMP. It's actually not that hard or time-consuming, and allows you to get any color on the spectrum. I love this method, and I use it for everything, from Sprites to Gundam coloring.
Spoiler: Recoloring Tutorial Follows
First off, you're gonna want to have your sprite open in GIMP. For this tutorial, I've chosen Hobo Phoenix, simply because he's the first sprite sheet in my folder.
Image

Next, click Image, go to Mode, and select RGB. This is essential to get the main step of this to work.
Image

Now, take your Free-Select tool, and point-to-point select everything you want to recolor.
Image
Entire selection:
Image

Here's the real step. It's also the hardest one. Go to Colors and open the Colorize tool.
Image
Your selection should turn Cyan.
Image
Now, adjust the Hue value, first.
Image
For reference, 0 is Red, 25 is Orange, 45 is Yellow, 60 is Green, 180 is Cyan, 200 is Blue, 245 is Purple, 310 is Magenta, and 360 is Red. These are just markers as to when that particular color starts to become dominant.

Next, adjust your Saturation. If it's a dull color, down the Sat, if it's vivid, up the Sat.
Image

The next thing you'll do is adjust the Lightness value. This is really important. Too dark, and you can't see it. Too light, and it has no contrast.
Image

After all of the coloring is done:
Image

A complete Hobo Phoenix recolored:
Image

Now, for the final steps, you'll want to Save As a new file. If it was just a single layer, save it as a .PNG to preserve quality and transparency. If you're saving as a .
GIF, you'll have to make sure to set the Image Mode to Indexed, again. Animated GIFs require that you color the parts in question for each frame, and that you save as an animation, so it takes each layer as a different frame. There's a tutorial on this somewhere else, so I don't feel I need to include it here.
PNG Saving:
Image
GIF Saving:
Image

And, now, you've recolored your first Sprite with this method. It's pretty easy, quick, and I've noticed that it gets consistently good blonde and dishwater blond.

Dishwater Blonde:
Image

It only looks bad because I had to do a lot of Cloning to get long hair from young Klavier.

By the by, Dishwater Blonde is a self-sprite.

Umm...You do remember there is that one tool...What is it said...
That finger thant points on those three colors.

I found that more useful, actually.
Wait a sec...

The anti alias will be the main problem here.
See what happens when I use that tool to both of our works backgrounds.

Spoiler:
Image

What I'm trying to say with this is propably completely EVVK for some people,
(or is it said CCL in english? Couldn't care less...In here it's ei voisi vähempää kiinnostaa)
but I myself have recently trying to use only few colors...

And...don't be sad, but your Phoenix edit didn't win my work in color counting.
My work had only 25 colors in it (basically only 16, but my accidentically had pressed the keyboard so, that the color became 0.01 percent transparent...)
Your Phoenix edit had over 300 different colors in it (343 to be exact.)
Normal Nick has only 27 colors.

I guess you see a bit clearer what I meant.
The anti alias is the main enemy with gimp, but in time you learn how to avoid it.

Sorry bout that confusing...explanation.
I'm not wery good at explaining things, and 50% less if I must do it in english, or any other than finnish...
But I guess I'm trying to say something like: Don't do it like that XD
(OK...That was bluntly, but I guess that's the only way I can say what I mean...)

I hope there someone who did get what meant and could explain this better.

Well, that is the big problem with this method. It ends up with more colors since you remove its index and replace it. It retains the originals, plus a JPEG index.

The tool you're talking about, Color Select, is really unreliable. I try not to use it, and dishwater blonde, there, is actually an incomplete work. I'm still cleaning the background after a bad delete of the selected color (Forgot Color-to-Alpha and used the eraser...)

I usually use a level of between 35 and 75 on the magic wand and color select tools.

Also, if I save as a GIF and manually index the image, it comes out with far fewer colors, but I was moving for speed, not quality.

As a general note, I haven't been spriting very long, but I've been doing custom colorations of Gundam lineart and Macross lineart for some time, now. My skill applies more to those fields that allow more color. Also, since we do anti-alias in those fields, I'm not too used to NOT anti-aliasing.
