I dont know if we already got one like it but...I decided to make this for those with absolutely no sprite talent...a basic mind technique a friend and much better artist taught me, changed a bit to fit sprites...maybe it'll help those said people out :godot:

consider the first step more like a concept that you'll slowly develop.

I say to these people to use this to practice making the circle themselves

Sorry If this sounds idiotic, i'm new here, so i dont quite understand the "Sprite Making" process. :sadshoe:

If it's okay, can anybody help me out here??

Yeah sure, there's a community of sprite artists to help you out so why don't you tell us what you don't understand and I'm sure one of us will get back to you, including myself. :godot:

The tutorial can be complicated but the results are worth it.

So what do you need help with? Is it the sprite making process displayed on Page 1? It's a bit lengthy but with trial and error, you can understand it easily.

Post subject:  Re: Need to know how to make sprites?

Spriting, especially from scratch, is a trial-and-error process with several methods of achieving the desired end. Some are more labor-intensive, others are more skill-intensive.

If you're experienced with all of the tools of your editor, it really helps.

On that note, do you mean you want to edit sprites to make a new one, or do you want to make a new one completely from scratch? I can't even do the latter. It's beyond my ability. But, then, my experience is limited to pixel-by-pixel shading and the use of GIMP's Free Select and Color tools, so you may have a better time with that.

I'm having MUCH trouble posting sprites without a white background- every time I try, it comes up in a white square. Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?

Post subject:  Re: Need to know how to make sprites?

You need to make the background Transparent Panda. GIMP, Paint.net, Jasc Paintshop, Adobe Photoshop etc all have functions for how to do this. Look up Percei's tutorial guide on how to remove white backgrounds to get transparency.

Hm, I have a question regarding backgrounds.

What is the best possible way to remove text that has been watermarked on a background? Would you use the brush, pencil or anything similar? :S

I'm talking about the backgrounds from Kusanagi.co.jp, so if any of you spriters out there have advice, then thanks in advance. :jake:

What program are you using?
If you're using photoshop, go to Edit>Preferences>General (or press Ctrl + K)
then Image Interpolation> Nearest Neighbor.

If you are rotating sprites, then do not use Photoshop. Always use RotSprite since it produces the best result, but you'll still need to clean it.

I've never had that problem. But then again, I only use paint and Gimp. I don't like rotating sprites though, sometimes their look a bit weird.

Post subject:  Re: Need to know how to make sprites?

I have to admit, I balked when I first read this tutorial on sprite-editing. :beef: I didn't think I had an ounce of artistic talent in me. But now that I've had some extra time on my hands, I've found that it's not impossible to do. Thanks to this tutorial, I am working at a careful pace so that my first (finished) edited sprite won't look so crappy. (Who knows how many past failed attempts I've had at editing sprites, but that's a different story.)

What I'm trying to say is "Thank you," but in the most sincere way that I know. :edgy:

Post subject:  Re: Need to know how to make sprites?

I have a question that I thought I would ask here before making a new topic.

How can you convert art to sprites? It is easy to just shrink down art to the right dimensions, but there is a lot of editing that it goes through, even though the original sprites were probably just resizes of original artwork. The outline is more jagged, black outlines turn to brown or close to the neighboring color, etc.

Does anyone have a tutorial on this "conversion"? What's the best program to use? Any other suggestions?

Thanks - I would love to make some completely original sprites if I can get this down :)

may someone explain me how to make simple Frankensteining at Gimp?
I know on page one it is explained but I rather get it directly explained by someone

well theirs no easy way per say since a lot of editing will usually be required
(I know this because Ive done this quite a few times with my own drawling skills)

The way I do it though would be using a program (really it doesn't matter the program though gimp might be a bit faster than paint as long as you know what your doing)
make sure the art is black and white (preventing a few problematic things when shrinking the image to proper proportion) from there id use paint and just edit away...don't be afraid to use a part from another sprite to help curve out areas if needed since that can be changed and edited later (though lets not take someone elses sprite...shall we) from there once you get the full outline start working on the rest of the sprite by that point is really up to you whether or not it turns out good or not :P

well take sprite a and sprite b and possibly how much ever sprites there are mix, mash, and edit...try try and try again until you get the desired result...really there isnt much to be said about how to frankensprite on gimp compared to paint since they both end up with the same amount of editing usually...just use the cut tool, paste in the area you want a part, then edit it...pretty much the same process on any program. :P

I have made two sprites out of official art, I just minimize them, until they're in a proper AA size, then start coloring with the pencil. I can't really explain how to make them.

Spoiler: Dr. Stiles
Image 29 colors, or something

Spoiler: Zero
Imageless than 50 colors.

PW ones have less than 20
and quoting Zinle
Zinle wrote:
When doing an AA character always; and I mean it; try to not use more than...hmm...Well I was goinf to say 40, since most AJ characters have something like that, but let's put it: NO more than 70, OK.
It takes some time to practice with limited colors, but believe me it's worth it.

Yup. All AA1 sprites have 15-16 colors.
I haven't counted the ones from JFA or TNT.
AJ ones have something like 20 - 40.

And the above thing is more like what I tend to do, personal opinnion.
Still using the lest ya can won't hurt right? :3

The colours thing has always confused the crap outta me.

How do you tell how many you've used? And why does it matter in the first place?

.:looby:. wrote:

I think two big reasons to use limited colors is A) Image size (less colors means that the image can be compressed into a smaller file size) and B) Style. If you want to make OC sprites that would blend into the AA universe, you have to work with a limited color palette, as they do.

For AJ and AAI it won't matter that much, but for GBA styled PW sprites it does thanks to it's color support.
DS just can simply support more colors at once than GBA did.
