I think what he means is: How do you animate Images with a background underneath.

Well if your using a PW background, you need to set your default image size to 256x192, then place your character wherever they would be standing on the Background (repeat each time for each part of the animation placing it on the exact same place on the BG) then animate as normal.

EDIT: Oh yes, I'm just noting as a by the by I've started a basic sprite making tutorial.

Also, I fixed the timing in the Animations Tutorial. So check back in about 10 minutes when I upload it.

EDIT2: Alright it's fully updated, with fixed screens and text. Also, cleaned up the first post a bit. :)

Man this thread is old. Anyway, I was thinking, and I decided to dive into way back when land and grab the Pros and Cons from Lynx's dead thread and post them here, so everyone can contribute and use them. I would say MS Paint is probably the best for spriting BTW.

I'm planning to try and animate with Flash 8. Wonder if that's possible and one of the better choices if you have it.

I wouldn't animate gifs in flash, it's kinda' overkill. And way too much work. You should probably just use Gimp.

Oh, and in flash you wouldn't be able to make it transparent.

Thank you, this is very helpful.
I've been looking for a GIF animator that doesn't plant its watermark on my work for ages.

... I'm not sure either, but V 2.6.1 is pretty good. To start it, um... did you install it first? If you did, double click on the icon on your desktop (assuming it's there) and wait for it to load (as shown by the GIMP startup window) It'll take a couple moments if it's the first time.

I could have sworn I added this to the first post but I guess not!

Anyway, you can find 2.2 here: http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/old.html

Wow, this is great help, since I use GIMP (and Paint.NET) for most of my spriting (though I hardly sprite XD), so I'll be using the animation tutorial once I make some open mouth and closed-eyes sprites. Thanks a lot~ ;D

If you want easier animation, try UnFREEz.

As long as the frames are lined up right, all you need to do is save each frame as .gif and then drag and drop. You can change the speed, remove a single frame etc. IMO it's incredibly simple and easier/quicker than GIMP.

Whoa... Thanks, Percei! I just started spriting, and I knew neither how to make a sprite transparent, nor how to animate it. Now I'll have to actually get working on a sprite sheet, and animate it. I'll post when it's done! :D
