*ahem* anyway, at his work there is a cubpoard full of uncorrected proofs of books, CD's, DVDS and very rarely games. Once they are checked they are put in this cupboard and anyone can take them home if they want to, for free. And he picked up this book for me that will be released in the UK in august, titled 'The maze runner'

IT IS AWESOME. It's about this camp of boys who live inside a place called 'The glade'. The glade has a farm, and beds etc, it's not bad. But outside the glade is a huge maze full of monsters called 'Creepers'. Every day 10 boys go into the maze to try and find an exit.
I'll leave it at that, dont want to spoil too much now.

Hah! It's been out here (the US) since 2009! I love that book!
...anyways, I actually have a similar situation involving my mom, who's a high-school "YA literary specialist" (basically an English teacher and a librarian mixed). I got Mockingjay (third Hunger Games) about a week before it came out.

Oh my goodness.

Asking me my favorite book is like asking me to pick my favorite... anything. Haha. I don't really pick favorites, there's just too much to love, in any category.
However, I like the Doctor Who books (donated to me by my mum), the Circle of 5 series (uh.. I think that's it, anyways. Starts with "The Dark is Rising", and "Over Sea, Under Stone"? Anybody?), and Pride and Prejudice. I can go into details if anybody wants them.

Just finished reading We, the drowned (translated from Dutch) by Carsten Jensen.
Well it had to be the single best book I have ever read.
It's like a semi modern Moby Dick but ten times better seriously you have got to read this book because it's just that good.
It's so good it's depressing because I know I will never dee anything as good ever again in my life.

I think I just lost a few thousand braincells. Why? Because of this.

I am going to forewarn you, that if you read it, you will want to sob, or perhaps gouge your eyes out with a frozen spoon, but if you complete it, you will be stronger. Albeit a bit dumber.

(This travesty has been turned into a book, which is the only reason why I'm sharing it with y'all.)

This book is masterpiece writing. And no matter how hilariously bad it is, it will forever
be better than Twilight.

Urgh, Twilight. Urgh, bad fanfiction. Can we talk about something better?

I want this. You know you want it too.

I'm currently reading Watchmen since my brother is a comic book fan. :3 Alan Moore is a genius. It's also much better than the film (which is also good).

... Also, speaking of fanfiction, Respawn of the Dead (TF2 with zombies) is very good.

Final boss my ass. This is the level you only get to play if you enter the secret cheat code on the bonus level you get by collecting all 4,096 collectables scattered randomly throughout the game. While Godot Agent Carr takes potshots at you.

Yeah, I know. Actually, the first is still my favorite of the series, but, you know. Still awesome. I'm a huge fan of Gregor the Overlander (also by Collins). It's got a different dynamic, but the same level of awesome as the Hunger Games. You should check it out.

Good Final Fantasy fanfiction? Contrary to popular belief, such things exist.

If you're interested in FFVI, but don't feel like playing the game, this is recommended for you. Excellent writing, script loosely based on the SNES version and perfect characterization make this one of the best fanfics I've ever seen.

Currently reading a German book about murders and modern forensic biology, called "Dem Täter auf der Spur - So arbeitet die moderene Kriminalbiologie" written by Mark Benecke. It's actually really interesting and includes a lot of photos and pictures of corpses, maggots, mummies and crime scenes which aren't always easy to look at.

I'm also reading a collection of several stories ("A Hunger Artist") written by Franz Kafka before he died. The story of the trapeze artist is my favorite so far.

Ohai~ I like books. :)

I mentioned a while back in the thread that I was reading Havemercy -- I've since finished it and read its two sequels, Shadow Magic and Dragon Soul and I find this series absolutely fantastic :D It's fairly obscure, but if there are any fans here, I'd love to know and say hi~

Also, any Neil Gaiman fans in the house? I've got my hands on Anansi Boys and American Gods and am wondering which one I should read first. Not sure it matters, but, just wondering!~

YES. I often find myself reading two books at once- one for academic purposes, the other for mere pleasure...guess which one Gaiman most often is? :redd:

I would also like to point out that Gaiman is something of an interesting case, as an author. Though his books are directed at children, they speak powerfully about adult issues, and I can tell you from experience of reading his books a few times over- they get deeper and weirder the older you get.

The Vampirate series by Justin Somper is genius. It's my favourite book series and Lorcan and Grace have great chemistry.

Mephistos series by freelance artist Naniiebim is also very cool. I met her at a comic convention in Birmingham and she signed the first two volumes. She's a very good artist and very friendly.

I don't read much, but tonight I picked up Mogworld by Yahtzee of Zero Punctuation fame. It's about a mage named Jim who's killed in a skirmish outside of his college and brought back from the dead 60 years later by a necromancer who plans to use his resurrected undead horde to conquer the world. However, Jim is unhappy with his new "life" as an animated corpse and begins his quest to seek a permanent and happy death.

I've only read the prologue and first chapter so far. The story is quite dark but Yahtzee's prose loses none of its insane wit and colorful descriptions that make his narrative skill unique. I recommend checking it out.

I have to say, I couldn't bear this book. It was just too bleak for me and I found the writing was really pretentious as well.

I love all of Kate Atkinson's books though- beautifully written and so much black humour <3
