I must admit, the reason why I mostly lurk in these forums these days is because I got somewhat disgusted at what happened to this fandom. Given the nature of the game, I expected it to attract mostly mature and intellectual people. Which it has. But I've recently seen a uglier side to this fandom which I hoped to avoid. I've seen the immature and not so forgiving sides of some people I used to respect. This is the first forum I've been truly active in, so that's probably why I'm wounded so easily.

Not just Tetris hentai... Try some Tetris YAOI!=p

I think it's true that there's porn of anything and everything (hell, there's even badly written fanfiction about the Bible!), but while it's fun to occasionally make fun of, I just don't let it bug me.

That's just messed up. Yeah, I'm just gonna avoid it for the sake of my sanity.

I don't know why this necessarily has to be limited to Fandom. 85% of just about everything on the internet sucks. It's a simple matter of "the more there is of something, the more crap there is of something."

It's an unsolveable dilemma. If you restrict access to a fandom through members only groups and by kicking out "noobs," you're an elitist asshat. If you open your doors to everyone, you're going to get all manner of fans providing all manner of content. Comparatively, I think PW fandom is more civilized than a lot of others I've been in. Some rudeness or a few misplaced newbie questions are better than pairing warfare.

There will always be fans with the "It was better when it was small~~~" mentality, but the truth is there are just as many benefits for large fandoms as there are downfalls (especially for shippers. More people = greater diversity, which can be good and bad). It's just that it's much easier to focus on the negative qualities.

Very well stated, and an excellent point. Yeah, I've run across far, far more Phoenix/Edgeworth yaoi than I care to contemplate, but I have yet to really see any bickering over pairings. In a reversal of what I usually find in various fandoms, there is a decided lack of shipping wars in the PW fandom so far as I've witnessed. Needless to say, this makes me a happy fan. I don't like yaoi, but I'm perfectly content to let the yaoi fans have their fun if they're not trying to ram it down my throat.

(Which could set me off on a rant about stereotypical scary rabid yaoi fangirls at anime conventions, but I'll spare everyone. :beef: )

If there is an issue with the PW fandom--I don't know how it was 'back in the day' since I'm a relatively new addition--it might simply be in that uncomfortable stage where there are a lot of different people with different views mixing, but it hasn't quite reached the stage where it can splinter into smaller groups comfortably.

Of course, that too can cause problems. Personally, I like the mixing of ideas and people; when a fandom splinters off into niches that can lead to bad blood between groups. And that's something I'd rather avoid. When you're forced to coexist, you're also more likely to be more polite and respectful to other people's ideas even if they don't mirror your own. On the other hand, smaller groups tend to be like being in a group of friends, and it's nice to get that sort of positive feedback from people that share your perspective.

As for yaoi in the fandom, that can be a touchy subject depending on where you stand. If you don't like it, there's too much of it. If you do like it, there's not enough. Funny how that works. :sal:

What happens if you're in the middle (assuming it even exists. I'm personally on the side that dislikes yaoi.)

As for the part about splitting into smaller groups, I guess I can agree with you on that, though I probably more likely call "People who talk to each other a lot on the boards and on IM" rather than any organized group. Let's face it, you are much more inclined to want to talk to someone with beliefs similar to yours, no matter how much you try to intermingle with others. The difference is, whether or not you try to start shit with others whose beliefs conflict with yours. For the most part, I am impressed with the people here and how they can handle this, leading me to enjoy this fandom.

To anyone who has had a major hand in another fandom: care to give me a comparison between this one and that one?

Well, back in the day, I was part of a Cowboy Bebop forum... And of course there were huge, bloody fights about whether Spike and Faye were "meant for each other" or not... That kind of thing is so ridiculous. You'd think that people who share such a niche common interest like a particular anime series would get along better. And of course I had to endure a lot of 'n00b-bashing' because I was new to the series and new to their inside jokes. I'm very pleased with this forum, because everyone here is more-or-less cordial to each other and don't seem to squabble about pairings or interpretations too damn much. We have disagreements, sure, but it seems like we're more willing to talk and exchange ideas rather than toss shit down people's throats. Actually, more than anything, there are just some members who are trying too hard to get attention. (Mind you, I'm fairly new here.) That's why it's really important not to be elitists so that they feel welcome without acting out.

Well, compared to the Danny Phantom fandom, this one is full of rational, reasonable, polite people. The DP fandom is in an odd situation though, in that the series creator has taken a very strong stand against yaoi, at least on his personal forum. Circumstances have placed some very overzealous people in positions of "power" on the closest thing there is to an "official" DP forum, and they've taken "Don't post yaoi of my characters on my forum" to mean "If you post yaoi of his characters anywhere on the Net regardless of how well behaved you are on his forum itself you can't be a 'fan' and we'll ban you."

This has led to some spectacular fanwars, though the worst of it was about 3 years ago when the "Don't post yaoi on my forum" decree first came down. Due to noisy minorities on either extreme (the fandom eventually came to use the terms "True fan" for the canon purists and "Anti fan" for the yaoi fans and others who deviate drastically from the canon), there used to be, and still is to some extent a divide in the fandom overall that has not only split the fans, but has effectively killed any and all efforts to try and save the show from cancellation. The purists won't give the deviants so much as the time of day (and vice versa), let alone work together to save the show.

Perhaps this fandom will experience a similar split over GS4 or various pairings, though I for one doubt it. This fandom doesn't have the same circumstances that put zealots in positions where they could try and force moderate fans to adhere to an extreme viewpoint. It seems that the moderate live-and-let-live approach is in charge in this fandom, relegating the lunatic fringes to the fringes where they belong.

I mentioned before being an "active target" in the DP fandom, because I'm working to build a third faction in the DP fandom- the otherwise silent majority of fans who don't give a damn about the "True fan/anti fan wars" and just want to have fun. I've yet to attract the ire of the "anti fan" side, likely due to my "real fan" philosophy- fandom should be fun, and while I may not agree with them, they are fans and therefore deserve to be treated civilly as such. I've more than earned the ire of certain members on the "true fan" side for the same reason, though the attacks have been sporadic and generally don't go very far because I'm not taking the flamebait. The last time one of them tried to get me into a flamewar, I told her point blank I wasn't going to flame her, and that I would not tolerate insults on my DeviantArt account.

Things in the DP fandom have actually be fairly quiet lately aside from some halfhearted flamebait art that has failed to spark anything. I suspect this is because the DP fandom is making the shift from an open canon (whereas this fandom is still an open canon- the game series has no official "we're not making any more" notice as of yet) to a closed canon, and is shrinking, forcing people to abandon the infighting just to keep a cohesive fandom in existance. This fandom is still expanding, and has reasonable, mature people in positions of influence; not a bunch of zealots trying to force one viewpoint on everyone else.

In my opinion, pairings are only interesting if hentai is involved.

Otherwise, theres no point in it.

I think all-in-all, this fandom works. We're not split into any huge, warring factions like my esteemed colleague Firefury mentioned earlier, and we're pretty relaxed and intelligent by and large.

This can't be an age thing. There are plenty of people here who are teenagers (myself included), and yet there seems to be more than enough maturity and openness.

Age may not play a major factor in this fandom, though I imagine it still plays a minor role. I think with this fandom, it's the type of people that are drawn into it. In the DP fandom, or indeed in many anime/gaming fandoms, intellect isn't a prerequisite to really be able to enjoy it. If you're the sort who wants instant gratification or action or eye candy, this fandom isn't going to draw you in. And the sorts of people that have the patience to play the games generally have a higher level of maturity as well.

Maybe. It just seems to me that this series of games just generally draws slightly better people than something where any bum with a half hour to kill watching TV or something can get into it.

You're absolutely right. That's pretty much what I was trying to get at (though you phrased it better). People who are into Ace Attorney have to have a certain sort of intelligence and patience to get through the game, and they bring this level of maturity to our fandom.

I'm sorry to hear about all that ridiculousness with Danny Phantom. If I was ever the creator of a series, I would encourage a lot of discussion and diverse opinion for my work.

Telling people not to make Yaoi is like attempting to take on the entire Chinese army. On foot, with nothing but a steak knife and a paper plate that says "Bring it on, bitches!" Ain't gonna happen. People all have their own ideas on what characters go together. The PW creators were smart and didn't create too many (only one or two) canon pairings and left the rest up to us.

Oh, I imagine there will be a fairly large split when GS4 comes out--between those that dislike it and those that like it. But, on the other hand, I'm on one end and Croik's on the other, and I think our discussions have been heated but ultimately very reasonable and understanding. (From my perspective at least; I can't speak for her views on the matter. ^^;; )

And there are things I like ABOUT GS4. It's just there some major problems it has that I can't overlook.

My thoughts exactly. I mean sure, DP is a kid's show, and I have no problems with the series creator saying he doesn't want yaoi of his characters on his personal forum. His forum, his creation, his rules. But certain members of the fandom have attempted to extend that to the Net at large, which is impractical to enforce at best and impossible at worst; and only generates drama llamas out of fans who otherwise had no problem respecting the creator's wishes in regards to his forum. The whole thing just served to generate unnecessary friction.

At least it'll probably be reasonable, and without additional strife caused by overzealous forum maintainers trying to force the issue one way or the other :edgy: I get the impression that most of the people around here can agree to disagree on something without going totally ballistic on eachother about it.

This may not be the case with other fandoms but I notice in the anime fandom its mostly the preteens and teens that

-Mostly whine and complain about dubs
-yells out random japanese words
-Think that kids shows (ex Naruto) are deep, intellectual, and not for people who are willing to watch and enjoy it. In other words "Underground"
-PAIRINGS PAIRINGS PAIRINGS(Mostly Marysue(themselves) and Yaoi)
-Think that if people don't like anime then they can go to hell

It's really unfortunate to meet hardliners like that. They're ruining our image. >_< I wish they could take a more laid-back attitude about other people's opinions. Maybe they're just defensive because they've heard too many "Ohmigod, you like Sailor Moon and porn!" insults. Anime is a misunderstood genre on BOTH sides.

-PAIRINGS PAIRINGS PAIRINGS(Mostly Marysue(themselves) and Yaoi)
-Think that if people don't like anime then they can go to hell

Thats what I gather when I visit Gaia's anime forum from time to time, and it never gets better.

And Naruto is not deep. God, I could reach the bottom with my pinkie! That's another lecture, though.

Its really sad indeed, it ESPECIALLY gives preteen and teenage anime fans(like me) a really bad name.

Also I even ran into a post saying "Naruto is deep, dark and intellectual, definitely NOT for kids and btw I hate toonami for airing this master piece". I didn't know whether to laugh or to track them down and punch them in the mouth.

Amen to all of that. Of course anime is really different and exciting, but people also shouldn't take themselves too seriously. Naruto is intended for kids, I really hate to tell them. If you want something a little darker, try Gankutsuoh or Cowboy Bebop. Mind you, some fans of that can be just as immature...

Thanks for working hard to dispel the awful image around us.

Heh, I suppose Naruto has replaced Dragonball Z as the "OMG BESTEST ANIME AVAR!" for the anime nuts that give the rest of us a bad image. It's kinda funny to see how the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Well that's your problem right there. Don't go to Gaia. It's populated entirely by post count whores. :yogi:

(The avatars are really cute, but it's more fun to save pictures of the clothes and edit them on your little dude in photoshop than actually try to earn them).

I really wanted to like Gaia, too, but there are sooooo many people who will read you the riot act if you don't agree wth... well, whatever it is they hold dear. So I like their little games and avatars and such, but they're nuts for post count and drama.

You know, I like parts of Naruto, I really do. But it wasn't all that great. The writing really went downhill after a while, and it became essentially Naruball Z, not just for its popularity, but also endless fighting and plotlessness... And its fandom probably scares me more than any other. Naruto fan are just downright nasty about pairing wars and non-fans.

I stopped going to the forums about a month ago, so occasionally I lurk and see if anythings gotten better.

It always gets worst so I started going to 4chan and surprisingly its a bit more civil, when people agree on things. They also know what you're talking about when mention something that isn't Naruto or Inuyasha

4Chan > Gaia ? The universe just about folded in on itself, there...

But then again, I guess readily available pornography does make people calmer.

Agreed.
Gaia is filled with teenage dramallama weaboos.
Thus why I only go on like...my one guild there and only venture into the rest of the forums when I'm incredibly bored.

Remove the question mark. It's unnecessary.
