Well...

Spoiler:
The atmosphere doesnt seem as tense as 999 so far, I dont mind Sigma though, the blips and bloops remind me of Junpei I guess. The elevator puzzle seems easier than I thought, but then... I havent quite escaped yet

Spoiler: Not really spoiler
Wait till you've played a bit more before making any sort of judgement, especially if you haven't even escaped from the elevator yet :p

Overall, puzzles in VLR are quite more complex than in 999. I've been replaying this game lately, and I noticed the difference. They've really stepped up their games with the sequel, and believe me, that damn notepad... you're gonna use it. A lot. Believe me :shoe:
(Wish there was a similar feature in 999, though... it may already be in there, actually. Come to think of it, I never found the calculator... is it available during escape sequences or only during the novel parts ?).

***
Currently on my way to the 'Normal' ending in 999. VLR really nailed it with the timelines system. Didn't bother me too much the first two times I played the game, but after playing VLR, it's become a bit of a pain to actually having to go through already read text PLUS redoing the escape sequences.

Which is kinda ironical, as I didn't use the fastforward feature in VLR, I just kept using the stylus to go through text. There were some parts I just couldn't miss each time :
Spoiler: Just before 1st BP game I believe
When Zero III pretends to be crying... just priceless :shoe:

Boy was I glad there was voice acting in the game, as this scene wouldn't have been the same otherwise.

Well now I escaped from the elevator.. ;) I wish there was an option of US voice acting for me as Zero III's voice is just brilliant :D
Spoiler:
I'll have to redo the elevator again as it was set to easy (even though the game said it was set to hard), maybe its a bug? Also, I was surprised the game threw out the "Maybe Zero is one of us" curveball so early on, but as I've already played 999, it didnt feel like a curveball so much, I had the same familliar thoughts when I played 999 - "How can Zero be one of the group? They can all hear him right now" etc... but then, maybe thats what they WANT me to think xD Zero III's rabbit puns were so bad they were good xD

Hmm, it does work during the Novel sections, but not during the escape sections (then again, I tried at the very beginning, in the cell, so it might not be activated yet ;)). I'll try again this evening.

Nah, Zero III sounds ten times better in Japanese, 'nuff said. :shoe:
Guess being able to differentiate various ways of speaking in Japanese kinda helps enjoying Zero III's lines in Japanese. I really laughed when Alice actually reads something written by Zero III (don't worry grim_tales, that's no spoiler :D), as it was sooooo weird.

Played some more 999 yesterday, and I noticed something that could be REALLY big (and that I never noticed before, maybe others have... probably, yeah).

Warning, 999 + VLR true endings spoilers!

Spoiler:
Got the regular ending in 999 and... well, remember that picture from VLR's true ending?

Image

Spoiler:
Well... I just noticed Snake's wearing the exact same clothes (minus the gas mask of course). Meaning that Free the Soul was already teased in 999, even before we got to know the damn organisation even existed. I don't think it's just a coincidence, and they just reused the thing in VLR. Because it also appears in the 'Church', on the flags. And it's the only room where you see that symbol.

Image (Taken from NeoGAF, meaning someone also noticed that). If you look closely, you'll notice the various planet symbols from the locked doors.

It does make sense that it appears in the building, since it was apparently owned by Cradle Pharmaceutical, as they used it for the first Nonary game. And we know that company was a big supporter of FTS, at least Ace and the masterminds behind the Nonary Game. As for the Church itself, I believe it was a 'cult room', where they 'prayed' and all. After all, FTS is nothing but a cult, with the Myrmidons being their 'armed branch'.

Now, think about Akane actually wearing FTS clothes during VLR's true ending... the question is : why? Is she a member? She's certainly quite interested in the Morphogenetic field and all, but being a member of the organisation that kidnapped her in the first place?... Are we heading toward a major plot twist in the 3rd game or what? As I've already said, it's no coincidence she's wearing those clothes, especially not when you realise she made Snake wear those exact same clothes in 999. She definitely knows what they mean.

So, what do you think about the whole thing? I have to admit, I was really excited when I noticed that yesterday's evening. I was also excited to realise it's definitely something the writer had planned from the begining. I really hope it's something that'll be explained in the 3rd game... Please! :shoe:

The funny thing is, when they fist mention 'brother' in VLR, I always pictured Snake in my mind. And I know why now : that' because he's wearing those clothes in 999. He's definitely not brother, though. Makes me wonder whether we'll see him in the 3rd game. I mean, I'm sure he's got his own role to play...

Sorry for the ''wall of text'', I got a tad carried away there :shoe:

Spoiler:
I think they did just reuse the random symbols/robes they had put in the church in 999 for FTS in VLR. I'm pretty sure they intended 999 to be standalone, and weren't thinking of teasers for the sequel xP

As for why Akane was wearing the robes in the end of VLR, I think there was something about her infiltrating it or something.

Ah yes, that silly verbal tic. There's something about it in the files. Fortunately (because otherwise it would be quite silly and un-Zero Escape-like), it isn't important.

Spoiler: @L~A and Bad Player
Even if they intended 999 to be standalone, they likely looked back at 999 and found things that they could use to link to VLR. Also, a good writer probably knows to leave some unexplained symbols around in case they do make a sequel, even if their purpose isn't defined yet. I don't think it's coincidence that they reused symbols in the church.

I think L~A's right. Something's going on with Akane and Free the Soul. Question is, what? And will it be a critical plot point, or is she just wearing the robes to infiltrate FTS? Probably not the latter, but it's still a possibility.

Yeah, you're right, I already brought up that topic before, but...

Spoiler: True endings
I had not noticed Snake was wearing FTS clothes at the end of the regular ending in 999... so that made me even more interested in knowing why Akane's wearing them at the end of VLR.

Yeah, I do think she's infiltrating that organisation... (even though I don't believe it's mentioned in VLR). That or she actually joined them BEFORE she realised they were some sort of a terrorist organisation. I mean, they do have millions of followers apprently, if I remember correctly, and I don't think all those people are terrorists or condone terrorism.

One theory I just came up with : she actually helped them/was manipulated (not likely), and now she wants to correct her mistakes or something. Of course, she only raelised they were involved in the Nonary Game AFTER she joined (or as it's already been mentioned several times, she joins to learn more about them.

I also agree with your theory that she's somewhat behind the whole Mars simulation (I actually remembered it ^^). Not sure if she'll be Zero though, as I don't think we'll get a Nonary game this time around... or rather : it'll be quite different from the first two games. I mean, why would they play a Nonary Game on their way to Mars? :p

About my findings :

Spoiler: True endings of both games
I don't think it's just a coincidence... I mean, the clothes and flags do have a rather unique design, that you don't find elsewhere in the game. I don't think they'd take something as random and have it become a major part of the sequel. Besides, there's no explanation about the Church-like room in 999, it's never explained what this room actually is, or what it's for. I doubt there was a similar room in the actual Titanic/Gigantic, as there's a coffin in there... Doubt they had a coffin in the actual ships.

Besides, there's the whole FTS/Cradle ''relationship'', as I've explained before. I may be TOTALLY wrong (wouldn't surprise me, Uchikoshi sure knows how to surprise me :p), but who knows... I really hope they'll explain that in the next gme... somewhat... maybe. I mean, I didn't even understand the Sub ending until recently, so yeah... :shoe:

But yeah, the connetions to 999 in VLR makes it clear they hadn't really expected to make a sequel, but I'm pretty sure the writer had a general idea about the trilogy when he started writing the first game. Not a detailed planning or anything (besides, it might look forced, like they forced themselves to pick up some uninteresting elements to include them in VLR), but I'm sure it's something he put there so he could use them later.

Sorry for the déjà vu, but my ''finding'' yesterday really hyped me up and set my speculating gears into high-speed motion :p

@grim_tales
Spoiler: Not really spoilers
Actually, it DOES matter. As a child, Sigma was forced to play a Meownary Game with 8 cats, and that really traumatised him. Not. I'm just kidding :p

But don't worry, Sigma tells a bit more about that tic a bit later in the game.

Spoiler:
I bet there was a room like that on the actual Titanic/Gigantic; it would be for the people who wanted to go to church/services even while out at sea. It wouldn't have had the FTS decorations or coffin, but... The coffin is there for plot reasons, and my bet is that the FTS decorations/robes were just there to look cool. Then when they made VLR and decided to retcon Ace into being a follower of FTS (blech), they went back and reused the decorations they had randomly put in the Church in 999.

Hm... I dunno.

Spoiler:
What you say makes sense, though I find it's rather strange location for a Church. Besides, I think there'd be a sign on the door or something. Then again, it's not like every room in the boat got actual signs on/near the door.

But there's something you forgot... it's the sign/logo on the clothes, which 'fit' perfectly with the name of the cult : Free the Soul.

As for Ace, him being a follower of FTS makes perfect sense. I mean, he seems rather obsessed with the Morphogenetic Field (if you go and buy the Gigantic + build a huge building that's an exact copy of the boat, then go and kidnap people to make them play a game where they can die just so you can research something is what I call an obsession. It's not like he did it for some sadistic pleasure, like the millionaires before him). Plus, let's not forget the ''tests'' at the hospital.

Granted, I doubt Uchikoshi planned everything so precisely, but I'm sure he had a general ideal nonetheless, and put some 'anchors' in the original game he could use.

That, or I'm just overanalysing thing, pick your side :D

Oh, and I found something reaaaaaaaally interesting when I was playing yesterday. It's a dialogue between Junpei and Ace, after Door 1. I won't say a word and let you read for yourself.

Spoiler: VLR + 999 endings
Ace: Junpei... Have you ever heard of the term "CAS"?
Junpei: CAS?
Ace: It stands for "Cells Alive System". It is an advanced technology for
freezing and preserving organic matter.
Ace: Put simply, it is a technique that allows one to freeze things without the
formation of ice crystals.
Ace: Normally, if you freeze something fresh, water within its cells expands as
it crystallizes, damaging the cell membrane.
Ace: CAS, however, works differently.
Ace: The object to be frozen is supercooled using magnetic fields, and then
frozen instantly and uniformly, giving ice crystals no time to form.
Ace: It was originally developed for the preservation of food, as an
alternative to the normal freezing process.
Ace: Now, however, there are rumors that it can be used for...other things.
Junpei: What do you mean, "other things"?
Ace: Well, there are obvious medical uses, but perhaps also...space travel.
Junpei: Space travel? Are you serious?

Ace: Surely you've heard of suspended animation? Cryogenic freezing?
Ace: It's a fairly common idea in science-fiction books and films.
Ace: People are sometimes "frozen" for especially lengthy journeys through
space.

Spoiler: My thoughts on spoilers
Well, I guess the 'medical use' means Cradle Pharmaceutical is using that technology, probably just for testing purposes for now. Maybe as preparations for something else?
The 'space travel' instantly made me think of VLR. I mean, the whole Mars simulation + the pods in the Moon base. If that's retcon (which it probably is), that's some pretty impressive retcon.

Funny thing is, I've always been under the impression that FTS was involved somewhat with the Mars simulation (I mean, Radical 6 spread because of the incident that happened there, but I was thinking more of the whole thing being organised, planned and even funded by FTS and Cradle. Provided my theory that Cradle had been using the CAS technology is true, then that crazy-*ss theory makes sort of sense :p)

I was as excited as a squirrel full of crack when I read that yesterday, ha ha. I just like mah crazy-*ss theories :shoe:

Edit : Aksys Games message about the glitch : click here! (Warning, link contains spoilers!)

Apparently, playing for a long period of time actually increases the chance of encountering that bug. Unfortunately, they only provided a work-around, and doesn't look like there'll be a patch anytime soon (if at all). Looks like they even got Nintendo of America involved, heh.

You can jump to anywhere in the timeline that you've been before. Just press A or tap on it.

To get past locks, you have to figure something out in an alternate timeline. You will notice the lock change color when you have the knowledge to get past it. There's also a hint of what to look out for in the lock description.

I have a question about radical-6.

Spoiler:
Earth's gravitation is 9.81 m/s2, and the moon's gravitation is 1.62 m/s2, about one sixth of that of earth.
People infected with radical-6 would perceive it as 3.95 m/s2, still less than half of that on earth. How did nobody notice the decrease in speed?

Spoiler:
I can't remember why it was called radical-6, but I thought it slowed down your brain to 1/6 speed. But if your brain does slow down by a factor of sqrt 6 instead, you have a point... I'd have to go to the ending to find where they talk about why everyone was infected with radical-6.

I guess that's a bigger concern than why nobody noticed that they got hungry or had to go to the bathroom more often. Yay for not needing to worry about such things in a fictional setting. :yogi:

Radical-6 slows down the brain to 1/sqrt6 speed. If I remember correctly, at the end of the game they explained that while the gravity on the moon is 1/6 of the gravity on Earth, the speed of falling objects on the moon is 1/sqrt6 of the speed on Earth.

Can't be.

To go past locks, you need to meet certain requirements... They range from seeing another ending to learning some valuable piece of information in another timeline. So, just a quick heads-up : I strongly suggest you play going from left to right on the flowchart. That way, you won't meet to many 'To be continued endings'. Then, go again from left to right if you want.

Minor spoilers where I tell you where the true ending path is hiding, don't read if you don't wanna know (but I thought it'd be nice to know, so you can enjoy it on 'one go'):
Spoiler:
The true ending path is actually on the rightmost branch... so yeah, better keep that one for last :D

Spoiler: Spoilers?
Also, just to let you know : left is always ally, right is always betray. I really think they should've hidden the timeline until you actually reach each part. Would make some parts a tad less predictable.

I actually started on the rightmost path for some reason, so if I finish that - I'll go back to the left most path (or try to) and then go right again. I think I finally get it.

Luna explains it here.
"The time that it takes for an object to fall is inversely proportional to the square root of the gravitational acceleration."
s=a*t^2
v=a*t, but we can't just take the same amount of time for both gravitational constants...

I suppose it was explained away by the participants feeling "off", but they believed it was due to the tranquilizer rather than gravity. The difference between what was perceived (3.9) vs. what it is on Earth (9.8) is still significant though...

And Sigma just thought Phi was really strong because of how far she could jump.

I think I finally get it.

Luna explains it here.

Spoiler:
Yeah, I figured it might have something to do with how acceleration works. It helps to have the explanation spelled out.

Spoiler:
I actually started on the rightmost path for some reason, so if I finish that - I'll go back to the left most path (or try to) and then go right again. Seems the game is actually explaining to me WHY I'm using the flowchart and what it "means" - genius. But I feel stupid like I shouldnt know this yet!

Spoiler: Spoilers
Yup, they do explain that. It's really brilliantly explained too, you'll get to know more as you progress through the story. This flowchart also helps a lot, since you don't even need to check a walkthrough to get all endings, and that's just... genius. Loved that myself.

But yeah, for the very first 'playthrough', just chose whatever way you'd pick yourself. The great thing about this system, is that even if you follow the flowchart like I suggested, you won't get bored, since not only the main timelines (the 3 main branches) are quite different (they don't tell the same story), but also, you never go twice through the same puzzle room... not once.

The reason I'm suggesting following the flowhcart is not just to avoid TBC endings (even though you will get a LOT of them, as you can only get 1 or 2 endings without hitting a lock), but also to make sure you don't miss anything.

And nah, it's not being stupid, it's not something you immediately when you play, you gotta stop to think a bit ;)

Some more info on the glitch :

Quote:
"I asked the production team and what I was told is that the issue itself was very complicated and investigating the issue took a considerable amount of time. Added to that, the investigation itself required a lot of go-between with three parties involved, one of which was separated by a language barrier and time zone.

While we've made some progress in researching the issue alongside Spike Chunsoft and first party developers, we do not have anything as conclusive as a patch at the present time. We are still cooperating with the developers to find a solution, and I'll update you as soon as any more details come to light."

What a mess, really. One year since the Japanese release, and they've barely understood what's triggering the glitch... :yuusaku:

I've decided to go to a different path....

Spoilers?
Spoiler:
The leftmost one?, as I began on the rightmost path and then hit a massive lock , in the last part but maybe there is much more in store even if theres just 1 lock left that I can see (on that path that is).
I'm thinking the "Zero is one of us" stuff sounds familliar to me, but something about it doesnt seem right. It's too.. obvious, too convenient. And why do the characters talk about it so casually? In 999, Clover's quiet, frightened supposition grabbed me by the throat and made me go "Ooooh fuck...." which isnt so much the case here.... yet.
I've decided to investigate the lounge.
Its encouraging I'm 13 hours in and not even close to finding 1 character ending however.

Ah, don't worry. It also took me a long while to get a character ending. It's perfectly normal, the game is not only much more massive than 999, but the timeline system makes things really different. So don't worry, keep going, and eventually you'll get your first regular ending. :shoe:

About Zero (very minor spoiler, safe for ya ;) :

Spoiler:
Yup, it does sound familiar, doesn't it? Have you guessed who it is yet? :)

But I agree with the lack of tension... then again, in 999, you had just found a dead body in a very... peculiar state, to say the least. Which really helped to set the right mood for Clover's ''revelation''.

Oh, and the Lounge... god was I confused by that puzzles with the drinks... :meekins:

So, finished 999 the other day, and I have to admit, I really enjoyed myself playing this game again. Of course, it made me realise just how much better VLR is overall, as far as puzzles/gameplay are concerned. The story is of course much more massive and ambitious in VLR, but I did enjoy the ''simplicity'' of 999's plot. And now that I'd played VLR, I really saw some events/plot elements in a totally different light (ie: my insane theories, for example :p), and I understood some parts better (even though I had already played the game twice).

Can't wait to replay VLR again, but I'm not gonna do that for now. I decided to go replay Hotel Dusk instead, as I didn't want to burn myself out. I really want to enjoy VLR, but also, I want to understand more stuff, compared to my first playthrough. So taking a break will be for the best I think.

Have you completed VLR fully?
I'm on the
Spoiler:
leftmost path now which is interesting.. and I got a bit where we see an old woman who's been murdered, but who is she...?
Theories about K - could he be Seven? If he's a robot, he couldnt harm the woman could he, because he'd be subject to the 3 Robotic laws?
I havent guessed who Zero is yet (either of them) :D But I just wondered this....
About Phi.. why can she leap so high? Is she a...
What about Junpei being Zero 3? Think about it, bunnies and all that :D

I want to make VLR last and enjoy it, but I also want more, MORE! :D

Can anyone help?
I'm stuck on the
Spoiler:
Gaulem Bay room :( Theres a robot man in the room, and I found a rusty key, a radio, a chevron shaped thing, a nametag with Harold written on it, and a flat battery, but cant find anything else to help me like a power cable or work the control panel?. I found the poster on the wall, maybe thats an anagram of some kind...?
Some of the dialogue is hilarious, eg Alice in the lounge - "Look at this soft skin and gorgeous face. You want to touch it don't you boy?" XD

Sorry as this is a silly question, but what on earth is the:

Spoiler:
password for the tablet? I've tried everything I can think relating to the 12 robots, their eyes being lit etc, but nothing works. Is the name tag even relevant? The poster doesnt help either as there are more than 12 characters on it, but then again....
Pleased I solved the voltage puzzle but it took me AGES :(
Any clues?

You need to combine the poster and the robots' eyes to find the password.

The Q&A is uploaded on the official site :)
Beware of spoilers for both VLR and Zero Escape 3.

My theories after reading:
Spoiler:
Santa/Aoi is involved in FtS, he might even somehow be brother.
Diana is the name of the person Luna is based off.
