People in the "Avent Children" topic were bitching about not being able to talk about Final Fantasy in general. So busy that they couldn't start a topic for it here. I did though.

Games I hate:

Final Fantasy I
Final Fantasy III
Final Fantasy VIII
Final Fantasy XII

Man what's wrong with Final Fantasy I?

Besides the fact that 8-bit Theater ruined it.

Least favorites:

II - Screwy "experience" system kept me from enjoying the game. *beats the hell out of my own characters to gain HP lul*

VIII - *drains magic from an enemy for a half hour and forced to go save Rinoa more times than Phoenix has to save Maya in the entire AA series* When the trading card mini-game is more fun than the actual game, there's something wrong.

XII - Played this for about two hours before being bored completely out of my mind; I know most RPGs start kind of slow but COME ON. Also, if I wanted to play a WoW-esque game, I'd play WoW.

Hi I was one of the folk whining about it, now gimme a break Pickens!

And 8-bit theater did not ruin FFI it's awesome :will:

FFXII was soooo annoying, I found my characters could take care of themselves so eventually I just fell asleep on the Giza Plains or something. The world wasn't threatened in it anyway so I wasn't bothered. Oh so we all died? Big whoop and the country gets occupied oh no who cares.

Kefka Palazzo. The main villian of Final Fantasy VI, and standard to which all other villians should be judged.

And 8-bit Theater was good for like the first 10-20 strips. Then it got bogged down by horribly slow "plot development" (I don't think they even left Corneria until like the hundredth strip or so) and the same stale dialogue/quirks (Fighter: i liek swordz, Black Mage: *uses lots of big and rarely used words to describe killing someone*, Thief: *steals everything in the universe including things that don't exist*, Red Mage: *twinktwinktwink*, etc.).

Most of the early ones are pretty uninspired. I know it created a foundation for better games to come, but still...

I think Kitase was the one who said he felt the older FFs were basically just bad Dragon Quest ripoffs. I'd have to agree, the series really didn't hit its stride until FF IV.

My favorite is FFX, and after that FFVIII and FFXII :p

I've only played FFIII (haven't finished) and FFIV (didn't like) of the pre-FFVII era. Kefka seems pretty cool, so I'm going to give FFVI a try if I ever get the chance.

A lot of people hate IV? I thought it was just him for now, I can understand a few folk not liking it thats natural but is it a generally hated one?

I'm liking it, playing through the DS remake right now and the music and voice acting is sweet along with the cool cast.

Currently playing FFIV (DS). I have recently defeated Rubicante and then recruited Leviathan and... the other one. Y'know, the one the you have to beat to reach him. About to go into the Sealed Cave; I think my party is a little over-levelled, seeing as Edge was 10-15 levels below everyone else when he joined.

I've played FFIII (DS) as well; I haven't quite finished it, but I'm close. Are any of the PS2 Final Fantasies worth purchasing?

I've always wanted to know why the series is called Final Fantasy, when it has so many sequels (about 12 or so). :think-think-think:

Its because Hironobu Sakaguchi thought that FFI would be his last game, since Square (at the time) was not making enough money on games like 3-D World Runner or even Rad Racer.

Most people loved IV, for good reason. :eh?:

Asura.

Your character levels are fine. It's just that Edge joins incredibly under-powered; you'd get slaughtered if you tried the Tower of Babel (take 2) at Level 35. By the time you get to the end, he should be closer to your other characters' levels, with the possible exception of Cecil.

X is decent, and X-2 gets a lot of hate but if you can get past the girly pop-ness, it has an interesting twist on the job system III and V used.

Actually, the interview with Sakaguchi in the December 08 issue of Nintendo Power covered this.

NP: Can you explain the origins of the Final Fantasy series' title?
HS: It refers to the last figment of imagination that you see - your truest dream, or something like that.

...yeah, I don't get it, either. :payne:

I have FFIII for the DS and I can't stand it. Sorry, it's just too unimaginative and cliché. Do you guys think I should buy IV? I've heard lots of people praise it.

Looking forward to FFXIII.

Yes, definitely VI. Kefka is a true villain that some one-winged bitch could only dream to be.
Fave FF hands down. Also, Full Metal Fantasy VI.

IV was my first FF, and I thought it kicked ass. But unfortunately at age 7 I had no idea how to beat Leviathan. D:

I've played most of em, minus X, X-2 and XII (yes, I even played XI).

Best ones IMO were VI, IV, and IX.

It was a typo, sorry.

Yes, V and VI would be very good on the DS. For some reason, everyone seems to hate V. I think it was fun, despite the plot being...so-so.

I heard the guy who originally did the first Final Fantasy had made a string of crappy games that sucked before so he decided he'd do this final fantasy for his son, it turned out to be a major hit and well...has a bazillion sequels and spin offs...yea.. :yuusaku:

@Allan I recommend X it is a high quality game, awesome for beginners (I got me friend to start playing with it, it's also where I started) and X-2 has a good system but...its..fanservice for the guys really. XII I really disliked it was a pain in the ass....

Personally I've never played XI online, heard it's quite alright.

Favourites are VI, VII and IX. Haven't finished I, II, III and V. Just started IV on the DS. NEVER PLAYED VIII (serious) xDDD

O:

FFVIII is pretty good...the Junction system takes some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it you can abuse the hell out of it (and limits...especially Zell's) and the game gets a bit too easy xD

As for why I didn't like FFIV, since some people are baffled by the idea:

Spoiler: "FFIV"
It just...wasn't my kind of story. Plus nearly everyone "dies" and then returns. After playing the newer FFs with their fancy development systems, the plain old set classes and learning abilities through leveling kinda bored me. It's not a terrible game, just not for me.

If you have a GBA or a DS, you can actually buy it. It's in the GBA cartridge format, but I highly recommend it. They added an extra dungeon too, I think.

Anyways, FFVI made me really hate Kefka. He is the l337 bad gai. That weird blue haired freak in FFX, um.. Seymour, yah, he doesn't come close.
Spoiler: Ultimate Spoiler of Love/Hate
and I still want to play as Leo, *sniffle*... DAMN YOU KEFKA!

I hated that bit in FFIII where you get trapped in that massive city-castle and you can't leave cause they shot your ship down.

Happened to me when I was just doing some simple exploring and boom! I'm stuck there for hours levelling to beat some annoying Gryffin thing with the hell move Lightning.

I got there and was killed by some enemy.

At first I thought it was another glorified Game Over screen like the one you get when you try to cross the swamp without those boots.

I thought it was....people had set job classes and you got to see them struggle with the problems of them. Cecil was torn about his path as a dark knight.

Also of note: VOICE ACTING, the VA scenes are awesome and it's so dramatic though sometimes Sasuke's annoying voice comes through when Cecil is going "NOOOOOOOOOO!!" which is a frequent enough occurence.
