Post subject:  New Forum Topic Rules

Whenever a new game comes out we always get a rush of new people eager to post. We love getting new people, but some of them are new to CR, or even new to internet forums entirely, and they aren't so good about looking back a page or two to see if someone has posted a thread exactly like theirs.

Sometimes we get spammers, whether they are bots, or invaders from other forums, or whatever.

The mods and admins have decided that in order to combat the surge of new and possibly uninformed (or even malicious) topics that are likely to crop up in the wake of AAI's release, we're adding a new rule. From now on, a new person with less than 25* forum posts will not be able to create new threads in the following forum sections:

The Defense and Prosecutor Lobbies
Courthouse Steps
The Non-AA sections (video games, music, movies, and Wright & Co.)

These are the sections that suffer most from topics of the "I didn't bother to use the search function" variety. New people will still be able to post intro threads, share their art and fics etc. We just want to cut down on the number of repeat and "noob question" topics cluttering the discussion boards.

The rule does not affect replying to a thread that has already been created - it just prevents people from making threads until they've had some posting experience.

Now I'm sure some people are shaking their heads saying, "Now that they know how many posts they need they'll just spam until they get there!" Well it won't do them any good, because we've also made it so that if someone with more than 50 posts continues to make horrible stupid threads, we can demote them and cut off their topic-making privileges. Indefinitely if necessary.

(And I'm not interested in typing "I'm not telling~" a hundred times, which is how many times people would ask "How many posts do I need to create threads?" if I didn't disclose it)

We're going to do our best to cut down the amount of spam flying around, especially with the influx of activity bound to follow AAI. Please help us out by continuing to use the report function.

And speaking of AAI, please please PLEASE remember that SPOILER RULES ARE STILL IN EFFECT!!! AAI will be considered spoiler material for several months after the game's been out, so DO NOT POST SPOILERS outside the Prosecutor Lobby, especially in your avatars or sigs. It's just not cool and suspensions will follow. And in case this wasn't clear before, this includes your custom made sprites if you used a spoiler sprite as a base.

Thank you, and if you have a problem with the new rules, feel free to take it up with me in a maturely-worded manner.

*: This is 50 if you joined before March 19. Sorry ^^"

Great to see you guys taking some action with all of this. I'm hoping this will indeed have a positive effect on the forums as a whole. I approve of this. =)

This sounds fair. Under 50 posts. Guess I have to work my way up. :beef:
Anyways, thank you for taking up action against this. Best of luck to all mods and admins! :keiko:

This is a great idea. I know I have done some spam, but it wasn't intentional...
I hope people follow this rule and don't create much trouble for you mods/admins.
This will also discourage spam to all users, not only new ones.

Now onto spamming the board so I can make some threads.

Seem's fine...

Of course is a newbie has something genuinely new to say that the search function wouldn't help with it might impair their ability to discuss it.

Yet do you really think it'll cause such a sudden influx in fans? :yuusaku:

on the contrary, many newbs will want to post new topics, so they'll feel incouraged the post? Is that along your line of thinking, Croik?

Oh well maybe it was during my break but I'll take your word for it and hold my tongue against any distinctly noobish/spamming members that join.

There will be plenty of places for new people to discuss the new game. There's already a thread for every case (I'm going to bump those as soon as the game is out), for pairings, for individual characters, contradictions, and in no time our older members I'm sure will be making "Played it, loved it" threads and things like that.

High postcount =/= Longevity/intelligence.
Have a repeated confirmation showing only that rule at registration or something. Priveleges with higher postcount encourages more spamming to reach said postcount. Sorry to disagree.

Author:  Croik [ Thu Feb 04, 2010 3:17 am ]
Post subject:  Re: New Forum Topic Rules

That's why we also added the option to demote users with higher post counts, if it becomes necessary.

Post subject:  Re: New Forum Topic Rules

My only problem would be that new members would spam to get to 50 posts, but I don't think that will really happen.

Great measure, Croik! I remember AJ's release, it was nuts XD

Oh, sorry, I missed that, somehow. Thanks.
Well, I see no problems now. Seems pretty straight-forward.

I didn't know there was a way to unable topic-making for certain users. That seems pretty useful, specially in cases like this one.

Yeah, it sounds great and all that, but I think the new users should be able to PM mods or admins, in case they need help or anything. I don't mind them not being able to PM regular users.

I don't think the new rank affects being able to send PMs.

Post subject:  Re: New Forum Topic Rules

50 posts is a lot for some people. Some people like to read a lot of topics but simply don't have anything to say, or what they said has already been said. Is there any way to measure time spent online and time spent registered? I foresee:
Topic starter with >50 posts wrote:
What do you think about ______?

Experienced member wrote:
It's very cool, and also, (insert interesting point about ______ here)

Another experienced member wrote:
I agree, but it's also (insert another interesting point)

New member with <50 posts wrote:
I think that it's (insert first point here)!

Another new member wrote:
I also think it's (insert first point here)!

New member wrote:
(unrelated joke)

Lots of new members wrote:
That joke is awesome.

Any member possibly wrote:
Yeah! It makes me think ______ about ______!

New member wrote:
Same here!

Experienced member wrote:
Back on topic, ______ is really ______, isn't it?

New member wrote:
Don't forget that it's ______!

Experienced member wrote:
I already said that.

New member wrote:
I don't get the joke.

Any member possibly wrote:
It's funny because ______!

New member wrote:
Good, you got it.

Experienced member wrote:
Well, back on topic, I think that...

Thread goes on again, normal.
But, my word can not be put into evidence yet. Let's test this out and see.

Post subject:  Re: New Forum Topic Rules

Well, it's cutting out stupid threads but not necessarily stupid posts but it's still a step up. You just can't go up and change people so easily though. Spammy posters will remain as spammy posters unless they magically have some kind of revelation.

Maybe it doesn't, it's just I was on a new account the other day, and I couldn't send any PMs to anyone. I thought it was because the account had less than fifty posts, but I could have been wrong, and there might have been another reason for it.

Yes, but P!ATD couldn't log back into her account if I'm not mistaken, and she made a new account to ask for help to address that problem of hers.

Yeah, that's what happened, Dragon. I only made the new account because the site wouldn't let me back into this one. I set up the new account to point out the problem, and Wooster managed to help me. I'm not planning on using the other account again, it was literally just to get me back in to this one. I didn't even want to set up the new account, I waited a good few hours before I did it. Sorry for breaking the rules. :sadshoe:

I think this is a great idea! Though I haven't been active on the forums for a while, I remember the madness AJ's English release brought with it (kinda fondly).

However, I have a question. Will people that have been here for a while but have post counts under 50 (me for example OTL) be affected by this new rule?

I know you said "new users", but that's a little ambiguous.
