Okay, since there's a lot of animes I haven't FINISHED yet, here's my Top 10 as of now, not including manga and movies. This is extremely subject to change.

1. Cardcaptor Sakura
2. Hellsing Ultimate (FUCK YEAH!)
3. Code Geass (Though I'm not very far into it yet...)
4. Ouran High School Host Club
5. Death Note
6. Fruits Basket (The manga is way better, but this is the only anime besides Cardcaptor Sakura that has made me cry TWICE.)
7. Fullmetal Alchemist (I really liked the first one, though I've heard great things about Brotherhood, though I've only seen the first episode. ;.;)
8. Axis Powers Hetalia
9. Azumanga Daioh
10. Elfen Lied (I've only seen a few episodes so far)

1. Rurouni Kenshin (even if the filler and such was terrible)
2. Fullmetal Alchemist
3. Cowboy Bebop.
4. Probably Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. I much prefer the manga to the off-the-rails original series, but this adaptation keeps messing it up. I think the original was just mostly a better viewing experience, even if the story was rubbish in comparison.

The problem is that you've only seen the typical mainstream shows, from what I can see. Expand your horizons, you'll find some fantastic gems.

Any recommendations? (If only to convince me that it isn't all mechs and high-school level drama XD)

On the subject of 'typical mainstream shows' I do feel I should mention I never gave Trigun much of a chance.

Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni is a must. Kurokami is fairly good too

...See, if you're wanting to avoid mecha, you're really asking the wrong guy...XD But I'll see what I can think of.

Hokuto no Ken, Karas, Hellsing Ultimate, Trigun, Axis Powers Hetalia, Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, Monster, Captain Harlock, Bartender, Tentai Senshi Sunred, Space Battleship Yamato...hm. Steamboy's good, if you're open to a movie, so's Akira...The Skull Man isn't bad, but it has serious pacing issues. It's only 13 episodes, at least. Seconding the Higurashi recommendation, I've heard nothing but good things about it.

...Wow I really need to watch more not-mecha anime.

4. Naruto Shippuuden
5. Soul Eater
6. Ouran High School Host Club
7. One Piece
8. Yu-Gi-Oh!
9. Beyblade (Its a kids anime pretty much...but I was really into it when I was smaller and it holds a place in my heart.)
10. Bleach

I recommend Wolfs Rain. Its not a very well known anime, but both the original Japanese and English dub are amazing. :will: And its not too long either.

There is an OVA called "School Rumble San Gakki" and is kind of the third season. It's only the last to episodes, but still...

2. Blood+ (Beautiful anime, I just remember myself wanting to cry on a few parts)
3. Ouran High School Host Club (As much as I hate to admit it)
4. Strawberry Panic (Yes, normally I wouuldn't watch something like this, but it was my first anime and it holds a special place in my heart
5. Hellsing/Hellsing Ultimate (It's Alucard, Walter and Integra, they're just that awesome)
6. Nodame Cantabile (I thought this one would rank higher...but)
7. Elfen Lied (Has it's moments)
8. Umineko no Naku Koro ni (The season isn't finished yet but it might move up eventually)
9. La Corda D'oro (This series...wow!)
10. Junjou Romantica (That one was just sweet and fluffy)

Honourable Mentions:
Vampire Knight, Trinity Blood, School Days (Dang that ending was...unexpected), Jigoku Shoujo (This was so repetitive, but I kind of liked it.)

Well, ever since they started airing The Final Act episodes, I'm actually liking InuYasha again! Mostly because it doesn't drag on the way the first adaptation did.

Other than that, I don't keep up with a whole lot of anime these days.

Anime shows I have enjoyed in the past include (in no particular order) Sailor Moon, Gundam Wing/Endless Waltz, SDF Macross, Witch Hunter Robin, Dragon Ball (original), Naruto (original), and Big O. I've seen other shows, but either I didn't watch enough to really form an opinion, or else I just didn't warm up to them.

Well since I've only seen two its pretty easy.
2. Sayonara, Zetsubo Sensei - Only started watching this today, looks pretty good :)
1. Naruto - I think the action scenes are awesome, and so is everything about it.

I've started to watch anime since I like drawing anime, so I can get some ideas.
(Oh, and I dont know if this happens to anyone else, but when I stop watching an episode Naruto or S,ZS and its subbed, when people around me talk it seems like theryre talking Japanese. Weird huh?)

Argh how did I miss this topic for so long?! Anyways, here the are in no particular order:

1. Fullmetal Alchemist, for its complicated, yet interesting storyline. Also, its dynamic characters and awesome effects.
2. K-On! for its cuteness, music, and characters. Never have I seen an anime that contained over 20 songs that I could learn on guitar!
3. Mahou Sensei Negima/Negima!? for its comedy, along with its cool effects. Just the idea of a 10 year old magician boy teaching middle school girls is hilarious.
4. The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya for...well, the characters! First time I've ever seen an anime where every character was likable.
5. Seto no Hanayome for its comedy. Seriously, I've never laughed so much while watching an anime.
6. Zero no Tsukaima for the unfortunate romances. Hilarious to see how a male can get caught in between like 10 girls against his will in anime. 10 girls! Cheer up!
7. Shakugan no Shana for its intense storyline and fights. Shana is badass as a fighter, but cute beyond belief when holding a piece of melon bread.
8. Azumanga Daioh for its comedy. Since when does the teacher traumatize her students with her driving? Since Yukari decided to drive, that's when.
9. Kanon/Air, a split here for their sad storylines. Because everyone needs to shed a tear or two once in a while.
10. Minami-Ke, for its hilarious episodes. An anime this entertaining shouldn't be this underrated.

Old lady, coming through. :yogi: Sorry to write so much, but I started out making it more of a "recommendations for others" list and then pooped out toward the end.

1: THE SLAYERS-- It's old. It's incredibly low budget by today's standards. Outside of the first and second seasons, it's 90% crap. But I will never love a show as much as I love the Slayers. For all its sheer stupidity, it's got so much more heart than most of the moe stuff getting churned out these days. Lina Inverse is pretty much everything an anime heroine ought to be. (And that includes: voiced by Hayashibara Megumi.) Seriously, if you can stomach some poor animation and cheesy gags for the greater good, go treat yourself to the best fantasy heros, anti-heroes, explosions, shipping and OP/ED music the 90's had to offer. It's all available for free on hulu via funimation. (Though I think you might have to endure their dub.)

2: Revolutionary Girl Utena-- This show made a really lasting impression on me as a middle schooler, even though it got a little surreal for me to 'get'. I'm re-watching it now, and it holds up surprisingly well. The music and art direction are really beautiful. The characters are all much bigger jerks than I remember, though.

3: Death Note-- Got me into the whole genre of "I am standing behind you." Ryuuzaki is so moe. :3

4: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood-- I resisted the first anime for a long time, due mostly to its popularity and my elitism. I finally got talked into it over the past summer. It was fun, but nowhere near as fun as the ongoing retelling that's sticking more closely to the manga storyline. Every single week is a "Holy Shit!" episode.

5: Trigun-- This is one from middle school that didn't hold up as well, but I still love it dearly.

6: Monster-- A serious, realistic show that still manages to be totally engaging and suspenseful! My brother described it to me as "Death Note for grown-ups," and it really does have that same creepy vibe to it.

7: Eureka 7--Sky-surfing robots, and another cast with lots of heart. This show hooked me right away by reminding me from the get-go of Lunar: The Silver Star Story, one of my all-time favorite video games. It did not disappoint.

88888888: Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya-- I think I see a little bit of Lina Inverse in Haruhi, and that is a good thing. Endless Eight was...less good.

9: This spot is reserved for the Bakuman anime, because I am so totally stoked.

10: Vision of Escaflowne--One of those totally genre-bending shows that gets all of the shoujo love stuff right, and still pulls off incredible mecha battles and a neat fantasy setting. Everything about Escaflowne (except the noses...) is gorgeous. <3

Edit--formatting. I bet it still looks huge...

1. Pokemon (First anime)
2. Dragon Ball Z - Awesome action and I think the storyline is great.
3. Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni - Creepy and mind scarring. Great. :karma:
4. Naruto (Bite me.) - I really only read the manga now, and it's wicked cool.
5. Mahou Sensei Negima - Great manga. Really great.
6. Seto no Hanayome - I swear, no other anime has ever made me laugh so much.
7. K-ON! - It's actually funny and entertaining.
8. Queen's Blade - :gant:
9. Shoujo Sect - :gant:
10. Shakugan no Shana - One of the more interesting animes I've watched.

Yesss! I see another Monster fan in this topic! :will:

That's my favorite anime; I read the manga first, but the anime was very faithful to it. The characters are very complex, the storyline is dark and multi-layered, and the art style is realistic. It's so incredible. (I'd hate to see Johan meet Kristoph or Dahlia... actually, that would be amazing.)

I don't watch a lot of anime anymore - I usually read manga - but here are some other things I like.

.hack//SIGN: Very interesting plot, and the soundtrack is beautiful.
Fushigi Yuugi: I didn't care for the main romance between Miaka and Tamahome, but I love some of the side characters and I like the use of mythology.
Yuu Yuu Hakusho: One of my first anime! I used to watch it every day after school (and every Saturday back when it was on Adult Swim). I still have a soft spot for Kurama.

I guess I'll mention the manga I like, too, because I generally prefer reading it over watching anime.

20th Century Boys: AWESOME series from the author of Monster. It's essentially a very different take on the old "save the world" plot, and the pacing and characters are done so well. It's a long series, but it keeps your interest throughout all 250+ chapters. (And it has an old hobo named God. What's not to like?)
Battle Royale: This was my favorite version of the BR story. It did a nice job at giving more backstory to a lot of the minor characters, and I... sort of enjoyed the excessive gore. :gant:
MPD Psycho: I just started reading this, but it's pretty good so far. It involves a character with a very, very bad case of Dissociative Identity Disorder (and that's putting it lightly). XD

In general I like seinen, especially psychological stuff.

I don't suppose you're a fan of Liar Game? It's one of my favorites right now, but I didn't want to bog down my list with things that haven't been made into anime. It's another one with that "less supernatural Death Note" feel. (But it's still a lot sillier than Monster...)

I loved Fushigi Yuugi so much that it pretty much single-handedly destroyed my middle school experience. Why couldn't I have a magical man-harem that loved me like that? The real world was so unfair.

I've heard of Liar Game, actually! I'll have to add it to the list of stuff I plan to read. Monster really got me into the psychological genre.

I used to have a huge crush on Amiboshi in early high school... :gant:
