In the year 2060, law has changed greatly. These days, law is nothing but a game. A televised game show, to be precise.

Studio audience applauds.

"Welcome to tonight's trial! Here's your host, the honorable Superior Court Judge!" The bailiff-announcer says to the jury-audience.

"What's tonight's trial?" The Judge asks.

"Murder!" The audience yells.

"The defendant?" The Judge asks.

"Larry Butz Jr.!" The audience yells, as Larry Butz Jr. is sweating profusely backstage.

"Bring out the defendant!" The Judge yells, as the bailiff brings Larry onto the stage.

"What do you plea?" The Judge asks Larry, as the bailiff hands him a microphone.

"N-not guilty, your honor." Larry says, still sweating nervously.

"Let's meet our (attorney-)contestants)!" The Judge says, as the contestants come on the stage and go to their tables.

((Your cue to enter. As soon as the/first defense attorney posts, I'll introduce a prosecutor, unless someone already joins as one)).

((Um...I'll be the defense attorney. Now, let's see if I can do this...))
A woman stood up beside Larry Butz Jr. "Martha Fey, Your Honor. I am this man's defense," she said. "And I can guarantee this man is not guilty."

The audience booed at Martha's statement. "Now let's meet our prosecutor." The bailiff walked over to the prosecutor's table and handed him the microphone.

"I am Gob. O. Payne. I can assure the jury that the defendant did indeed kill the victim."

The studio audience cheered. "Mr. Payne, your opening statement?"

Gob smiled. He was ready for this. "At 12:15 AM, the defendant when to the convince store to buy some beer. When he got there, the victim bought the last pack of beer in stock. Being the alcohol addict he is, he jumped the victim outside the store, killing him in the process. Your honor, he used his fists to kill him."

The audience applauded his opening statement. Larry continued to sweat nervously, however, he does not look like your usual alcohol addict. "Ms. Fey, your opening statement?"

"Your Honor, Mr. Payne is accusing the wrong guy," Martha said, ignoring the audience's boos. "First of all, I would like to point out that my client is not an alcohol addict." ((I'm guessing the evidence for the case will be submitted later.)) "Mr. Payne's argument sounds good right now, but it will shatter within minutes."

((I made it as it is on purpose. You'll get what you need later on in this case)).

"Ms. Fey's logic is clearly flawed. Why else did the defendant kill the victim? He went to get some beer, right?" Gob asked, as the audience murmured in agreement. The Judge banged his gavel.

"Mr. Payne, call your first witness." The Judge demanded.

"The prosecution calls the defendant to the stand." Gob said, as Larry when to the witness' table.

"Mr. Butz, were you at the convince store at the time of the murder, were you not?" Gob asked.

"Y-yes, I was." Larry said in a nervous tone.

"Why were you there?" Gob asked.

Stop or allow this line of questioning?

At least these people aren't booing me again, Martha thought.

"I was thirsty, so I went to go get some beer." Larry said, calming down as he spoke. "Why beer?" Gob asked, obviously attempting to make Larry look like an alcoholic.

Allow this line of questioning?

Larry wasn't sure how to answer. "W-well.... They were out of root beer and I decided to try for some beer."

Gob smiled. "Oh really? Then what happened?"

"They were out." Larry replied.

"What did you do then?"

"I went to another store."

"Did you see anyone else?"

"Well there was one person who bought the last beer. He was at the checkout desk with the beer when I was on my way out."

"Then you killed him, didn't you? Outside of the convince store?" Gob asked.

The audience murmured a bit, but it stopped before the Judge could bang his gavel.

"Objection!" Martha yelled suddenly. "That's enough, Mr. Payne. You're badgering my client, and, if you're going to accuse someone of murder, quit hiding behind your questions and show some evidence."

"Here, take a look at this." Gob handed the autopsy report to the bailiff, who in turn, handed it to Martha.

Autopsy report:

Time of Death: 12:15 AM
Cause of Death: Blood loss due to various broken bones, namely the ribs, which punctured the lungs
Murder Weapon: Hands

"Mr. Fey, wasn't that around the time that the defendant left the store?" Gob asked Martha.

"It's Ms. Fey, and yes," Martha said, feeling a little offended. "So? There are plenty of people who actually DO drink heavily that come in and out of that store around that time. It's nothing uncommon."

The studio audience laughed at Gob's blunder, but the Judge silenced them. "How many of those people killed each other for beer?" Gob asked Martha. "Do keep in mind that he's an alcohol addict, not a heavy drinker."

"How should I know?" Martha asked. "But we don't know my client killed someone for beer, do we? That's why we're having a trial. So, that would be...None that I know of."

"I guess I should all my first witness then. Do you have anything you want to ask the defendant before we move on?" Gob asked, as the audience waited for an answer. The Judge waited for an answer as well.

Martha waited nervously for a question to be asked, hoping it wouldn't destroy what little leeway she had.

"It's all on you at this point." Gob told Martha. "Either you cross examine this witness or I move on to the next one." The audience waited for a response.

"Well, being the defense attorney...There's no way to get around cross-examining the witness, regardless of who they are," Martha said. "Besides, I think he hasn't had the chance to testify. Could you testify about what happened that night, Mr. Butz?"

The audience again laughed at Gob's blunder. "Yes, testify about the night of the murder." Gob said to Larry. He gulped. "O-okay." Larry took a deep breath in, then started testifying.

Testimony:

The Night of the Murder

"I was thirsty, which is why I went to the convince store.
I originally wanted to get some root beer, but I thought real beer would be fine.
They were out of beer, I left the store.
On my way out, I noticed that a man bought the last pack.
So I waited outside for him and tried to buy a beer off of him.
He said it was for a party, so he couldn't sell me one of his beers."

The Judge nodded. "Ok Ms. Fey, you may now begin your cross-examination."

"With pleasure, Your Honor," Martha said. Please don't be lying to me, Larry.

CROSS EXAMINATION
"I was thirsty, which is why I went to the convenience store.
I originally wanted to get some root beer, but I thought real beer would be fine."
"HOLD IT!" Martha yelled forcefully while extending her index finger. "Why did you decide to make the change?"

"They were out of root beer. Didn't I just say that?" Larry asked.

"Yes, but you neglected to testify about that." Gob told Larry.

Larry grew worried, as if he had done something wrong. "Well so what?!" Larry yelled, in the same manner as his father did in his murder trial; Phoenix Wright's first trial.

"I think you're lying if you're going to keep such details out of your testimony."

Larry started to sweat again.

Larry sighed. "Do I have to say my testimony again?"

The audience laughed.

"Ms. Fey, I already get the point. Do you still want the witness to restate his testimony?" The Judge asked Martha.

The audience groaned. "Very well, restate your testimony." The Judge said to Larry.

Larry sighed.

"I was thirsty, which is why I went to the convince store.
I originally wanted to get some root beer, but they were out.
Because of that, I decided to get some beer.
They were out of beer, I left the store.

This is a court of law. Where do you think you are? The Price is Right?
"Because of that, I decided to get some beer."
"HOLD IT!" Martha said, mimicking how she did it before.
"How old are you, Mr. Butz?" she asked so the audience could know how old he is.

"23, a good 5 years over the drinking age." Larry said calmly. "Ms. Fey, where are you going with this?" Gob asked Martha.

"Nothing," Martha replied. "I just wanted to establish that he is of legal drinking age. Now, to move on to my next question, why beer? If a store's out of root beer, wouldn't the logical thing be to get coke?"

:objection:

"That question is irrelevant. Besides, stores don't carry such drugs." Gob told Martha, as the audience begun to murmur about Coke. As usual, the Judge silenced the audience. "Yes Ms. Fey, please use a different line of questioning."

"Not that kind of coke. Coke as in pop. Soda. Coca-Cola," Martha said. "Pepsi." I'd better be more careful with my wording.

"If I wanted to get one of those drinks, I would have said so in my testimony." Larry said with a neutral look on his face.

"Which is why I claimed it was irrelevant." Gob told Martha.

"The defendant wanted to get root beer." Gob said, taking on Winston Payne's trademark pose. "Besides, pop and soda are the same thing, not to mention that's what root beer is. Like I said, the defendant is an alcoholic."

Larry looked really worried now.

"I asked Mr. Butz, not you. Besides, pop and soda are the same thing, just different parts of the world use different terms. Coca-Cola or Pepsi, then. Why not Coca-Cola, Pepsi, or another kind of soda?" Martha asked, rather impatiently.

"Because he's an alcoholic!" Gob insisted, getting annoyed. "I've already established that several times already. Why else would he murder a man with beer?" Gob asked, challenging Martha's line of questioning.

"Maybe if you read the autopsy report, you would see that the man was killed by someone's hands, not by beer. It's a simple question. It can't damage your case. Why are you fighting so hard to stop Mr. Butz from answering?" Martha asked. "You know, your answers make sense, and your prosecuting skills are great, but, just for the heck of it, let's hear the defendant's explanation."

"I'm sorry, but if you can't comprehend what I'm saying, you shouldn't be here right now? Do I have to restate my opening statement? The defendant mugged the victim for beer. Do you understand that?"

The Judge shook his head. "He did make that clear early on." The Judge said to Martha.

"Yeah. That's exactly what we're trying to either prove or disprove, which is impossible if you'll answer all the questions instead of letting the defendant, and witness eventually, answer questions. Maybe you should try hearing what I have to say instead of hearing what you think I'm saying," Martha replied harshly. "That is why we have trials, see? To find out the truth. If you answer everything, you only waste time and we get no further in any of this."

"The only reason we can't continue is because you can't accept the fact that the defendant is an alcoholic." Gob told Martha, as Larry started to lose it. The stress was getting out of hand. This was it, he thought. He passed out on the witness stand.

"Well lookie here!" Gob said, noting Larry's condition. "I guess we can't question the witness anymore." With that, the bailiff took Larry away. "In this case, I'll have to call my second witness, Mr. Fred Sahwit."

The bailiff brought out Fred, who walked to the witness stand.

"Name and occupation?" Gob asked, as the studio audience laughed. "Dammit." He whispered to himself.

"I am Frank Sahwit, and I'm the cashier at the Kwiq-E-Mart that the murderer came to the night of the murder."

"Please tell us about that night." Gob said to Fred, trying not to make any more blunders.

"Ok." Fred said, before giving his testimony.

Testimony:

The Night of the Murder

"I had one last customer before my shift was over.
Or so I thought.
The murderer came into the store looking around for something.
He didn't find what he was looking for, so he left.
Apparently my last official customer had what the murderer wanted.
So when I was leaving, I saw the murderer beat the victim until he died.
It was 12 o' clock when I saw this happen."

The Judge nodded. "Very well. Ms. Fey, you may begin you cross-examination."

D'oh! Gob thought to himself, for he lost his chance to make his case more convincing.

Martha shook her head. That Payne is just...A pain!
"It was twelve o'clock when I saw all this happened."
"Hold it! Are you sure you saw all this happen at midnight?" Martha asked.
