Hi, I'm Gerkuman and I've been asked by Croik to look after this lil' area. After taking a cursory look at everything, I decided that this forum needed some simple rules that everyone can follow. :)

Edit as of 21/07/2010: Now that General Luigi's moved on, I'm taking control back over the section. I've been kinda neglecting my duty, as it were. ^_^

Edit as of 20/07/11: Yes, it's been a year since the last rule change. How appropriate!

1: No God-Modding
Lets face it, a story isn't much fun if everyone turns out to be Superman. Everyone has weaknesses, and so your characters should too! Also, remember that this is a group activity, and it's not a good idea to try to make the RP totally about your character.

2: A paragraph please!
This one might be a bit controversial, but stay with me. One sentence posts don't really move the story along, and they're more than a bit bland. And that is why I'm setting the rule to spice things up a little. Remember, the best RP's have depth, and it won't take too much effort to write a paragraph. :D

3: You must create a Signup/OOC Thread
We have a new subforum. Please use it for signups before you start, and once that's done, use the topic for OOC chatter. That not only means the topics can stay clear, but even better than that, there's no restriction on how much you can discuss the RP now.

4: If you have any questions, PM me.
This one doesn't need much explanation, I think. And now here is a little thing which should explain the rules simply, I hope you like it!

The unfortunate ballad of George
Smorgmeister: George began to doggie-paddle through the lush blue ocean. He loved the feel of the sea water in his hair and the salty smell of brine. It was his most favourite place in the world.
Socoblam!: "HEY, I LIKE PIE!"
Smorgmeister: George turned his head towards the newcomer. He seemed to like Pies; which was something George could relate to as he also enjoyed pies. "Do you like Potatoes?" he asked the man.
Socoblam!: I went up to him and stabbed him to death.
Smorgmeister: As George wound his way up to heaven, a thought struck him. All of this could have been avoided if the rules had been followed. Still, at least there were pies and potatoes in heaven.
Socoblam!: Ceres and DeMatador hit me in the balls with a spanner :(

The end.

For those of you who don't understand that, that means NO SPAMMING.

Also, please do NOT neglect rules 2 and 3. People have NOT been keeping to a paragraph in length, and since I've added the OOC/Signup Threads, there should be no OOC talk in the actual RP topics from now on.

Yes sir Gerkuman sir! I will do my best to follow the rules you have set forth! Now I go to RP with your rules firmly placed into my mind!
(And I'm not joking here, though it may seem like it.)

Good for you, no-one else seems to... It's enough to make anyone depressed. It's not like it's hard to make an effort to post more than "Hey, I was wondering if you could pass me the biscuits please" I mean, it's an improvement, but the rules are still being broken.

I mean, what do you want me to do? Start closing topics? Start giving warnings to persistent offenders? Start to ban people from the RP section entirely? Because I might just start doing that if people don't do what they're supposed to do.

This. Is. Not. A. Chat. Board. Please, don't make me have to go strict on you. On a happier note, Thanks to everyone who has followed the rules

To bad we can't embed the rules into the bottom of each RP's page or something. Right where people post. That way they can't miss them!
I'll probably copy the rules into the first post of any RP I make to make it easier on people. Anything to prevent rules from being broken!

I'll keep a lookout on the Family Tree RP for you, and I'll drop a line if they need to do better.

You don't have to worry about any of the RPs I'm in; they're all pretty straightforward with the 3+ sentences per post. :D (Except maybe the Restaurant RP, which I still do 3+ sentences for.)

The thing is, I think that rule needs to be revised now. People are doing three sentences... of about 7 words each. So, I have a question for you all, and I want to know if it's sensible or not.

'Should I amend the 3 sentence rule to the paragraph rule, and use the length of the sample post in my sig as the approximate minimum?'

7 words is better than 4 word sentences, which I used to see a lot of in some RPs. I still think it should depend on the CONTENT of these sentences. If it furthers the story, let it be. If it's just idle banter that two people use to RP back and forth for hours until more people come (Which I've seen happen SO many times and it makes me so angry when people do that!), then it should not be okay.

Just a suggestion.

But Xero is that what we really need? Yes, obviously we need to have fun, but what do you get when you re-read the topic? It's bland; where is the descriptions of the people and places? I don't know if Phoenix is wearing a hat, or what colour hair has, or if it's a cool rainy autumns evening. Same goes for people, can we see into their being? Do we know that Romeo has feelings for juliette, or what would happen if you gave Iris a kitten?

The more we put into our stories, the more they come alive and the more satisfying and important they become to us. And that's what I want everyone to learn :)

While that's true, things like whether someone's wearing a hat or not is a one-time thing in the same situation. What do you do after that? Repeating what's already happened is just as bland.

"Hold on, hold on!" Chris quickly swerved and turned around. "We can't confront her now. If she's meeting with her sister, chances are Dahlia knows where Iris is at the moment. All we can do is follow her. If she goes off the roads, I'll park and we'll go by foot. Sound good?"

This is after I've described the fact of them being in the car, it going slow, them spotting Iris, and now he's explaining why they can't just park and get out. This is in the middle of a conversation that's going on, so I had to wait on Sen to respond with Phoenix's response. I did forget to use the second character in this (I was given permission to RP another person's character while she was gone; she'll not be able to RP for two weeks, and she trusts me), so it could have been longer in THAT aspect, however in the case of one character in a post, I didn't want to have to say "He kept his eyes fixated on the road" a third time, since that should be obvious by now.

Also, it might be easier to debate this on MSN, so we don't flood this topic up with a debate XD

Remember that there are still people who haven't really developed a character yet. They may not be able to give much info about who they are until they start working themselves into situations. I'm still at that point right now.

What Donald says is true; however that actually depends. You can always give appearance descriptions every now and then, since that's something that every character should see by a certain point in time. If they cannot, you simply say that something's hidden behind a hat, a shadow, the darkness of the night, whatever the case may be. Just, normally you would only describe the appearance once; unless you're outside and your hair flows or something to the effect.

You don't have to repeat yourself though, you just need to find different stuff to mention. Traffic on the road, music on the radio. Also, what about peoples actions and how did people say their sentences? Did Chris say his words determinedly? angrily? Franticially? It's a good way to pad out your posts and to provide more information.

Besides, the post you did was pretty long anyway :P I just believe we need more description in our posts, and this is a way of doing it. Also, this topic is for discussing the rules; I don't mind. :)

Great rules. I may end up putting this in a link on the bottom of my RP, saying "Remember to follow the (link starts here)Three Golden Rules(link ends here) of Roleplaying." Also, I try and describe how I say words, even though I use "said indifferently" or "said excitedly" and so on quite often. Also, I periodically insert simple actions my characters do like scratching their head in thought or pushing strands of hair out of their eyes.

I think the rules are quite nice!
I mean, if the RP is failing so much, to only have casual 'Oks' (Which I'm guilty of a few times...) then something should be done there to bring it up! And Slezak's idea to put the rules under his own topic is cool. I think I might do that as well, even though I don't really make topics that much... And the god-modding rule should be obvious to everyone. :D If not, then they are oblivious.

I approve the rules and I hope the rules approve me. There is one problem though: the fact that I don't speak English as my main language makes it hard for me to write that much. I do believe though I can do it if I try and I will try.

Hey, by the RP rules, that post you just made was the minimum length for an RP post! So just keep the 3-line thing up and you're OK!

No offense, Iris, but with the posts you write, that 50 word minimum's gonna be bumped up REAL fast. x.x My advice is just to follow it. The rest of us should not have to suffer because everyone else isn't following the new rules.

I agree with Iris, some people have a hard time making posts that long, I've never been very good at writing anything that was supposed to be very long(I couldn't even write a whole essay, but I'm working on it.. :[ ), and I just can't make posts in an RP that are 50-100 words long. I was already having a hard time coming up with something to post in RPs before this new rule.

I'm really new at RPing, I came here to learn how because the rules weren't very strict, and it's kinda hard to learn how to RP when all your posts have to be a 50-100 words long.

And why make the number of words larger if people can't even make they're posts 50-100 words long? Yeah, maybe some peoples posts should be a bit longer.. But 50-100 words is really long for people who are used to RPing with shorter posts.

I'm done.. :shy:

Personally, I think the longer posts rule is a good idea and I back it up, but I feel that there's going to end up being a problem with the system.

Some people may end up repeating themselves, or perhaps will be completely stuck on what to write... Which means that more than likely, the majority of RPs will shrivel up and die.

However, I'm still for the new rules. <3 It's just so much better when you see an RP updated with a nice chunk o' text to read.

Best thing to do in that instance is to wait and see if someone will post before you. Leave it a day or so, and if nothing has changed, write it yourself. Thats what I do anyway. OR, you can MSN the other people in the RP and ask for ideas :3

I was thinking about that this morning. I don't want to sound like a cry baby but I think that 50 may be a little extreme for some people. Something like 30 words may work a little better. You still have quite a few words to put in but it's not overwhelming.

That is definitely the down side to this.
People really don't want to write that much, and feel pressured to do so...

If anything, the rules just get to be confusing, considering all the niggling details that people will have to consider when deciding how much or what kind of content ought to go in each post they make. Then again, that was the point to begin with.

I'm perfectly comfortable with this new system as it does not affect my writing at all - then again, I don't RP on this board. I should, though.

And that's about 80 words.

Fifty words... Okay, this post will probably only take me one or two minutes to write, but it will indeed have fifty words in it. Is it that hard to write a simple paragraph? Is it that hard to describe what's around you? What your character's doing? I mean, most good-sized sentences can be comprised of more than fifteen words... Okay, I'm finished ranting again, and I've probably overshot the word minimum by a long shot, but people, it's not that hard... Don't make him have to bump it up to 100...
