There was another picture, it had the same image of him on the bike, but trailing behind him was Maya and Pearl riding on a purple bike.

Well, according to 2-2 he doesn't know a thing about cars, and doesn't have a license. So... why would he buy a car? He could probably take lessons but *shrug* And according to official art, he uses a bike (but I personally wouldn't want to get my suit sweaty before even getting in the courtroom). Then in AJ I assume Phoenix walks to most places. [actually, just from 4-2 but still]

This has come up on this forum before, and it's usually agreed that, generally, Phoenix doesn't get paid for quite a few of his cases. In some cases it's due to defending a friend and/or someone who would never be able to pay him back (Maya twice, Larry, Maggey twice). Of all the cases we've seen him take, the ones most likely to have paid him are those he isn't directly friends with (Will Powers, Max Galactica). Edgeworth and Lana may or may not have paid him.
Also, keep in mind that's entirely fan speculation, and that there really isn't much proof that shows just who pays him beyond the specific times he mentions not getting paid by certain people. Of course, seeing that he still has a business after three years of practicing law, he has to get paid sometime.
As for Gumshoe's car, he does say he has one, and indeed did crash it on the way to the courtroom near the end of 2-4. Because of his "pay deductions" and bragging about his low income, I'd imagine Gumshoe having a small, used economy car, probably one that's fairly old and past its prime. It would go with his otherwise meager living style, seeing as he seems to eat nothing but microwaveable meals every night.

Also, sometimes Phoenix just takes note of the evidence, like ones that are too large to carry or he simply cannot take (e.g Don Tigre's scooter)
