Not a surprising move considering even the Japanese game had the translated script in it.

What was the verdict on the animation quality for this? Was it superior to the iOS version?

Eh, I already have the originals, and I don't really see a need for me to buy it... But this will be good for newcomers into the series to play.

Not much, but they fixed the talking and blinking, and the music is from the GS Sound Box. Also, can a moderator or admin move this to Trial Minutes?

Well if the talking was fixed that was probably the most aggravating part about playing the iOS version so there's that.

Ugh, 6+ more months? I don't understand why they're waiting so long to release it over here, when they already have the finished game available (I mean, the Japanese version has the english localization built in!)

Oh well, I shouldn't be complaining. At least we're getting it over in the west, and I for one don't really care if it's digital only, since I get all my 3ds games digital only anyway.

I still wish they would bring over a physical release...I had my Edgeworth cosplay ready to go for this to pick it up at GameStop...ah well glad that we are getting it regardless.

Bumped over to Trial Minutes.

Not too surprising that they're going through with it, though digital-only is a bit of a shame. I'm surprised they're leaving JP language in!

Actually surprised they aren't selling those separately, tbh, since it's digital only.

That's cool. No incentive for the rebuy on my end but I'm happy for people who got into the series through DD to have a way to experience Takumi's amazing OT at such a cheap price.

Here's to hoping for Capcom to legit announce something new at E3 (or finally getting a PLvsAA US release date from Level-5/Ninty).

To quote my exact reaction: "EEEEEE!"

I'm very excited for this actually since it basically the iPhone's HD port, but they fixed most of the problems with it from the sound of it. Hopefully this will get new people into the series too. Now all we need is that Dai Gyakuten Saiban English localization announcement and I'll be the most excited Ace Attorney around!

Well, I guess it means Capcom is now willing to try to release Ace Attorneys worldwide. (Even if it's English Only.)

We probably wont get an AAI2-Drama anytime soon, hurray.

Bahhhh for some silly reason I thought this would have a physical release as I was watching the trailer.
These titles are nowhere near as celebrated in America as they ought to be, which is super lame.

I'm thinking about buying it anyway, just to support the team and support the release of Ace Attorney in general.

I can't even say I'm disappointed it's digital only, since it was painfully obvious to anyone that given DD incident that retail releases were a thing of the past. It still would have been nice to get a real retail release of, you know, a retail game, but that's Capcom for you. The fact the 3DS is actually region locked makes it even more rage inducing since the retail release in Japan is fully English. The irony.

What does surprise me though is the long gap in release. With no production of retail release, the fact the game has been done and out in Japan for months and it's already fully localized, it's puzzling this is a winter release. I can't believe it would take that long to swap Japanese and English as the default boot version and get whatever permission to put it up on the eshop.

All in all sad news all around.

While I am glad we're getting it, I can't say I'm not disappointed in the release being digital only. I also have to question the far off release date, though in the case of the US I would imagine PWvsAA's release might be a factor.

Now what? Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney 3D, and Ace Attorney Investigations: Miles Edgeworth Trilogy? (Gyakuten Kenji 12 Mitsurugi Selection) P.S, the "12" is one-two, not twelve.

Oooooh, might try and get that!

I understand that why people might be legit upset about it being digital only (i.e. Not being able to buy the game once it goes off the server) but I sure hope that people don't declare boycotting again because that's not the answer * sigh *.

I second that. Boycotting / not buying the game because it's digital only is only going to hurt us, the fans, in the long run. At the end of the day we want the Ace Attorney franchise to pull in as much money as possible, physical or not.

I certainly wouldn't call to boycott, because let's face it, that was never going to work. We have no way to win, we never did. If you don't buy it because digital only is unacceptable to you and you want to voice your displeasure with your money, they look no further than "no one wanted it". If you buy it digitally hoping it will show support and get us back retail releases, bad news, they don't look any further than "digital sales went well, they like it that way". Recent history as well as Capcom's current management and the direction/agenda they've announced (digital/mobile focus) plainly says that retail sales of anything outside Japan that isn't expected to sell 10million units or that has "Street Fighter" in the title are a thing of the past.

If it making money had any chance of reversing this ridiculous trend of digital only retail releases, I'd agree, and while I want the series to do well, I won't support it, or any other franchise, that goes this route.

We seem to be locked into a catch 22, apparently Phoenix Wright Dual Destinies sold better than CAPCOM's expectations in the west, so I would think that would open the door for a physical release of any future Ace Attorney title, sadly this is not the case here. If we refuses to support this game we will give CAPCOM a reason not to bring future games to the West (ie DGS or a possible GK123 pack if they ever make GK3), but even if we do support it CAPCOM will pull the "we are playing it safe" card. Sometimes I feel like the Ace Attorney fan base is the only base (next to Monster Hunter) that CAPCOM will listen to...but moments like this make me realize we aren't even a blip on their map, at least the western Ace Attorney fans.

Ouch, Capcom are such cheapskates. Seriously, it can't be that expensive to get the already finished French, German, Italian and Spanish text in the game (for Europe) and producing some cartridges shouldn't be too expensive either.
Yes, selling it on the eShop probably gives them more earnings per unit sold, but is it really worth all the bad publicity they get with the AA fans?

Personally, I don't care for a retail version and despite being German I don't need the German text. But AA is one of my favorite series ever and I want a good relationship between publisher and fans, otherwise it's hard for me to see future titles in the series coming over to the West. So sometimes I wish someone like NISA would publish the AA games here.

Anyways, I will buy the trilogy just to support the series (and to hear that awesome remix during the menu selection ;))

Thank the ghost of Ryuunosuke Naruhodou. I'm going to stop in Japan for two days after a flight back from Singapore this summer, and I had planned to go to a nearby game store and pick up the Naruhodou Selection (and a Japanese 3DS.) That was pretty stupid, but then THIS came in. ON THE LAST DAY OF SCHOOL!!!!!! (For me.)

... Great and hard-to-avoid excuse to learn Japanese? Sold.

I guess, for me, the whole digital-only thing is actually working out surprisingly well... It means I don't have to choose between carrying around Trauma Center or Ace Attorney all the time :ron: I mean, yeah, I'd still prefer to have the physical copy, but I can't deny the extra bit of convenience... considering how much of a packrat and a klutz I am at the same time too it's probably for the better anyway >_<

I like how they're leaving the Japanese text in. But I still think it's the same as the iOS port. Even the trailer couldn't avoid some missing speaking frames, and so I'm a little iffy as to if I should fork out the $30 (It'll probably $40AUD like Dual Destinies) for something I've bought on iOS (and Wii Ware) already.

From what I saw, many characters are animated properly. A few still only have two lip flaps instead of three though. Fixing the sound was a bigger thing though, and they managed to do that from what I heard.

Gyakuten Saiban is a great place to start for potential Japanese students, granted that you at least know how to use a kanji dictionary, can read the kana, and recognize what certain particles do. If anyone's interested, I'd love to help fellow students with Japanese. It's why I run a translation blog at all. [/shameless self-promotion]

That was actually the case for the DS versions of the first three games so there was no guarantee of Japanese text.

I am not so sure about that. It would seem likely that the two games would be spaced out as to avoid competing with each other.

Thank goodness this is finally coming out! I had always assumed it would, until we didn't hear about it for months. That got me really worried about the future of the series in the west.

Now that this is coming out, though, I'm going back to being cautiously optimistic about future games coming out in the west. It would be great if we saw something about the new AA at e3, but I'm guessing we'll only see this and maybe PLvsAA.
I used to have Sam Waterston as my avatar but photobucket added a watermark and also Law & Order has been cancelled for 10 years so it's time for me to move on.

Yeah, I've played through it side-by-side with the DS originals and the animations are dependent on the character. Some characters are completely and perfectly animated right down to smooth, multi-frame eye blinks (like the Judge), but other characters' animations are still missing frames. Some of the more obvious ones being Maggey's arms not moving anymore and oft-repeated ones like Phoenix's paper-tap and Maya's nod still being choppy ala the iOS version. Alongside that, this version is also still missing several visual effects, like the 'pixelation' effect (ex: Phoenix getting light-headed in case 2-4, the Psyche-Locks being removed, etc.) and flashbacks not being in black-and-white (except for case 1-5, which oddly has this effect intact for some reason while all the other cases don't).

Most annoyingly, though, at least in the Japanese release, is the fact that they've actually reverted the slightly updated European/WiiWare scripts to the NA DS originals, so the "miracle" once again never happen.

And here's a few more snaps I took of unfortunate typos (spoiler warnings for AA1, if you somehow still haven't played it):
Spoiler:
Image Image Image Image

I should've taken more from AA2 and 3, because those games still have all of their original typos intact, especially case 2-3 (which is still as horribly typo-filled and awkwardly-written as ever). Very disappointed that after five re-releases (counting JP->NA->EU revisions) this stuff still hasn't been fixed. Capcom, PLEASE hire a proper editor. PLEASE.

However, I would still call this a competent release and recommend it to newcomers. It's at least very much improved from iOS (no more mismatched sound effects and music, all the characters at least blink now, all the music tracks are now the beautiful Sound Box remasters, case 1-5 has proper cutscenes now) and aside from some watered-down animations and some weird slowdown during the "witness testimony" animation, it performs just like the originals and looks great. I'd still suggest grabbing the DS/WiiWare versions if they're available, but I think we can all agree that $30 for all three games digitally delivered to a handheld nearly everyone has now is pretty great for newcomers. The excuses to not play these games continue to dwindle.
