I have to assume that such a clear break from the canon story line had to be done for some reason or it seems silly that they would have stretched things like that. We could speculate the probable - that the artist just likes Robert Hammond's design for whatever reason or we could speculate more interesting reasons.

Why not a simpler connection? Mia, Diego, and Grossburg were all characters that showed up in GS3. That's practically everyone we know in Grossburg and Co. save Hammond. So why not throw him in as a cookie?
Now, going with this theme of related characters we never really got to see in the same scene... I'm hoping the next image shows the extended von Karma family.
