I don't think that the penalty thing is a big deal, considering you can save practically at any time. In fact, it's probably for the best, to prevent the OCD behaviour of saving and reloading every time the player is unsure of something.

hoso_boso has a recent blog post about an interview Nintendo Dream did with director Takeshi Yamazaki. He posted bullet points for things he found interesting, but I've translated the points more related to AA5 the game:

Spoiler:
・Ace Attorney has lots of fans, so they wanted to bring back old characters, but also introduce new ones. It ended up being like an "all-star".

・They didn't want to remove Apollo, but they also decided from the start that he wouldn't be the main character.

・There's quite a lot of volume in Case 1. They put a lot of things into the Case so it got a bit long. However, there was actually an even longer version.

・Some character motions not in the demo are also present (eg. Junie taking a flower on her hat, bringing them to her mouth, and then making a gesture like she's breathing oxygen.)

・In response to the question "Will the 7 years between AA3 and AA4 be touched on in AA5?" Mr.Yamazaki replied "Well.. this is sort of a difficult question to answer, haha."

Besides the interview, hoso_boso also described the rough character sketches. Shall I get to them?

Spoiler:
  • Phoenix had a beard among other things that were discarded. Trucy had made a hand-knitted version of his suit that was also tossed out.
  • Athena's character design was designed along with the story scenario. It took quite a while for the finished design.
  • Her color was decided as yellow from the start, to match Nick's blue and Pollo's red.
  • Her name had around 200 suggestions.
  • They didn't expect Apollo's design to change from the last game, but still wanted some sort of "hook" to catch people's attention; thus the bandages.
  • They also figured to change his hairstyle to match the look.
  • The idea of a "prisoner prosecutor" came easy; the actual design was difficult. Blackquill's initial design featured his prisoner outfit, but wouldn't fit as that of a prosecutor, so they went from a nihilistic samurai-like design to what we see now. His name (Yugami Jin) came along with the design.
  • Fulbright's name (Ban Gouzou) was decided from the start. The "Ban" came from Prosecutor Yugami's guard/lookout (using the same character).
  • His design was based on Blackquill's, and being his overseer, he'd have to be a detective of some sort. Also, because Blackquill uses psychological manipulation, they made it so that Fulbright is oblivious to it.
  • He follows his own logic and isn't bothered by what others say about him. They gave him a holster for all his stuff, like his gloves, wallet, etc.
  • Edgeworth's cravat was supposed to be frillier, and his hair was swept back; among other things up until the final design.
  • The idea for glasses came from his dad's appearance (though Gregory was genuinely near-sighted). Since he's 34 in this game, close to the age his dad was before his passing, it was natural that he'd inherit some of his looks. Plus, it was by popular demand among staff. And to complete the picture, they gave him the title of Chief Prosecutor.
  • Now that Pearl is 17 in this game, she'd have grown quite a lot. Fans might not like it if they changed her too much, though. Since the tumults she's been involved in the past are over, they decided to keep her original designs as such.

The final page of the GS section is a picture of Nick and Thena, as shown on hoso_boso's page (blurred for copyright).

Judging from the interview, Mr. Eshiro felt the same way.

If you want, sure. I didn't include it here because it doesn't really provide information on the finished game. I wonder if there are images floating around though...

If there are, they're not on his blog. He always blurs out the scans he takes.

I hope you mean like a clean shave. Usually when I see characters I love suddenly getting untrimmed beards, they looked depressed :udgy:
