[Announcing the Court-Records 3.0 beta!]

Update: Official profiles added on the AA6 site.

Per the other day's announcement, this week's Famitsu will feature an article on Blackquill's appearance in AA6 (alongside detailing some of that Apollo vs. Phoenix face-off.) While we'll have to wait for full scans in the morning for that, Famitsu's review for the game has leaked early; their reviewers gave it 8/9/9/8, for a total of 34/40.

-Seeing how all the characters - like Maya - have grown and changed was really heartening. I wound up investigating just about everything just to see more dialogue! Each episode lays plenty of breadcrumbs, and I was really surprised by how it all came together in the end. (9 points)

-It's as fun a logic series as ever, but occasionally the plot developments got a little too out there, and I wound up thinking "what the!?" I didn't feel the game was very fresh, but it's as easy to enjoy as ever. (8 points)

Spoiler: Scans

A dispute over a certain piece of evidence leads Apollo and Athena to face off with Phoenix in court. Meanwhile, Blackquill is called as a witness in a trial (note the magazine doesn't say these two incidents are one and the same) and, finding the spectator's seats too "boring", soon hops behind the defense's desk to act as support.

Meanwhile, in the DLC episode Turnabout Across Time, Larry introduces Phoenix to his bride-to-be, Shizuku Ootsubu - a maid working in the Haguruma household. Shizuku claims that just after she was married, she was attacked and nearly killed, only to travel back in time at the critical moment; she now finds herself the suspect instead! She also notes that Larry's got his head screwed on backwards as usual - she's getting married to a man named Raito, the blue-haired mechanic in the second set of scans. Phoenix and Maya meet both Raito and Edgeworth when they head to the scene to investigate, and soon find themselves going up against Edgeworth in court.

Honestly, I'm freaking glad they went back to an AAI2 style "everything comes together in the end" style plot vs DD's "the only two cases that matter are 4 and 5"

Also that one 9 point review looked like an honest to god fan of the game series, so thank god at least one of them was

Dude no, why? That was the most unnecessary comment, stop turning EVERYTHING positive about this negative. The reviewer said they like Maya's growth and change. What right or grounds do you have to base your statement on?

I admit I turn negative things positive a lot, but that's without actual evidence. This person has PLAYED the game and is a fan of the series, so i'm inclined to believe them. We get it, you're so routed in your bias against Yamazaki that you can't say anything positive about it, but if you have nothing to add to the discussion other than "Haha, I doubt this informed opinion of someone who has beaten the game" then please do not post at all.

The review quotes are like IGN
7.8/10 "Too Much Water" -IGN, not because they're silly, but because the "8" score reviews have a negative quote to go with it xD, other than that, I'm really excited about this game, it seems it's going to be similar to my two favorite games in the series, T&T and AAI2

Actually, they are quite like IGN's review. This game is the one in the series with the most water by far, especially with all the snow. What's so wrong with a little more occult to the game? I can understand too many overdramatic moments can render them cringe-worthy, but lowering the score just for a little extra occult theme is very much what IGN did.

That said, I am prepared to have to face the inevitable repetitiveness of the divinations. I really hope they've incorporated the use of senses well and thoroughly.

Before people compare this review to previous reviews and stuff, don't forget that Famitsu has more than four reviewers, who don't always write on the same series (usually, the same four reviewers do all the reviews of a week, so sometimes it's just timing). And because I don't think it's [i]very[i] useful to try guessing all about what a reviewers thinks about a game (a series) based on two sentences, I looked up the other Ace Attorney reviews this particular group of reviewers worked, just so to put things in perspective.

Reviewer 1 is Ranbu Yoshida, who gave Dai Gyakuten Saiban a 9 (can't find text).

Reviewer 2 is Gigolo☆Ashida, who gave Dual Destinies a 9, saying: "The game has a good pace, and the circumstances during trial parts keeping changing, so there's a good sense of tension that sucks you in. They'll have you thinking hard, but it's very nice that you can get a hint if you can't solve it yourself. The 3D animation looks good! There are new gimmicks like the Mood Matrix, and you can feel the game has evolved in all areas". Ashida also scored Dai Gyakuten Saiban a 9 (can't find text).

Reviewer 3 is Honma Urara, who gave Dual Destinies a 10, saying "The characters look very attractive, now they've become 3D and all alive. What's amazing is that they kept the classic 2D feeling. I'm glad that the game overall plays smoother than before, with a handy optional system for hints. The final plot developments were really shocking. This is the series' best entry!"

Reviewer 4 is Rolling Uchizawa, who's been around the longest (he's a freelance writer). He gave Ace Attorney Investigation 2 an 8, saying "The direction is fantastic, with a good sense of pacing with the camera cuts and timing of the sound effects. It's made to pull you in from the introduction. The new system Logic Chess adds a heated verbal struggle between offense and defense, and adds a nice touch. There are some plot developments that might be going too far (?), but I guess that's part of the charm. This is a game that allows you enjoy the thrill of plot twists". Uchizawa gave Professor Layton VS Ace Attorney an 8, saying: "The game is structured so you play the systems of "Professor Layton" and "Ace Attorney" one after another, so there are few suprises gameplay-wise. That feeling you get when you point out a contradiction in court, you can enjoy that as part of the game. The presentation is fantastic in how it keeps the player excited, and can also be enjoyed as a good reading material. Dual Destinies got an 8. "The character's feelings are portrayed very well with the 3D graphics, like subtle facial expressions and reactions and it's become a game that's fun to watch. The well-paced presentation is as always with this series fantastic, and the game sucks you in from the start. There are some parts where I feel it might be going too far, but the tense struggles in the court are something to enjoy.

At first I was a bit wary of the game's quality, but lately with all the new info plus the spoilers from the leaks...I'm hyped as hell for this game! So can't wait to read everything what happens in it after the Japan release! Looks to be the best Ace Attorney game yet! ^_^

I like what I'm hearing. Their verdicts seem like they really love the series and judge it as a fan would've.

The comment about Maya being grown up is reassuring to me that she will not just be exactly as she used to be, and the comment about some developments being too "out there" fits in perfectly with what I've often said about the Yamazaki games, and finally the comment that everything ties together surprisingly in the end excites me. I hope it really does tie together without any holes or anything or without something akin to the final villain of DD which seemed slightly left-field.

Overall, I'm stoked to play this. Just 3 more months xD

I think this might be a bit misleading. I think the reviewer is saying the GS6 respective plot ties up well, not the GS456 narrative. For what we know we might still be none the wiser about who Apollo is at the end of the game, but the Khura'in "revolution"-plotline will have twists and turns that tie unexpectedly well together with the other original characters in the Japanifornia storyline.

Good to hear the game is enjoyable to the point the player wishes to investigate everything. At least, that's the way it should be.

I agree with linkenksi that it is more referring to the self-contained story. That's not to say GS4/5 plot threads won't be brought up, they may very well be, but I think if they are they will be supplementary to the main focus.

...though personally, I would actually say GS4/5 already are resolved, but eh. Having one or two mysteries left open doesn't mean that the game itself is not resolved.

For example, in both GS1 and GS2, there are open mysteries/plot threads that are bought together in GS3.
But I wouldn't say that 1 and 2 are incomplete stories without 3.

That sounds really nice, although that was what I always expected. The basic layout of the story doesn't give much room for filler cases, so it's likely they all tie in to the story in the end. I am also like this reviewer that I investigate every single thing on the screen, so I am just happy this returns.

According to Ash he said the same thing about AAI2, so I guess he likes more down to earth things. But I really liked AAI2's plot so I think I will be right at home with SoJ. :)

The crazier the plottwists, the more I enjoy myself. Though one of the reasons I love the crazy plottwists is because once you've come to expect that from the series, your own speculation as you play starts getting crazier. Attempting to figure out 'whodunnit' requires a lot of creativity at times.

And I'm glad at least one of the reviewers was tempted to investigate more just to get more dialogue. It means the script must be well written and the characters actually say interesting things. AA5's investigations (the few that we had) were kind of dull.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it was confirmed you could examine things outside of the crime scene this time? I think that's part of why AA5 felt that way, numerous interesting looking backgrounds you couldn't actually interact with.

Oh, I know, but I was referring strictly to dialogue. Regardless of how little we were allowed to investigate, whenever we were I just wasn't really into it because the characters' remarks were always a bit bland. If this reviewer was tempted to investigate even more 'just to see more dialogue', they must've upped their scriptwriting game.

Then again, it is pretty subjective.

It doesn't really say, but I'm pretty sure it's part of the main story.

I don't think they specified it was in the DLC, so I think this is main game.

Aww. You might be right... Seeing as the translation bolt gave used the word "series" I took it to meant at least something from a past game would be resolved.

It is unquestionably part of the main story.

The one thing that really bothers me about Phoenix standing at the Prosecutor's bench is that he's still wearing his defense attorney badge. Back when Edgeworth temporarily swapped sides, he actually went through the trouble of swapping his badge, so I'm wondering if this is relevant. Is Phoenix a prosecutor in an official capacity, or is he just standing there for the sake of opposing Apollo in a very unofficial trial?

Also very curious about this 'Apollo-Athena tag-team' nonsense. Apollo was supposed to be the protag of his own story, so it seems strange to me that he'll get swapped out with Athena at some points.

Seems to me like they're actually just debating who gets to use and keep an evidence relevant to both countries.

Yeah, I really don't understand this. Is this case 4 or case 5?

That's probably the first time I dislike how they advertize the game. Why would they show such a thing from very late in the game already? Imho the last Famitsu article should have been only about the DLC case. All the Phoenix vs Apollo and Blackquill on the defense bench should have been a surprise.

Same. It feels a bit like the mock trial from the Academy case, except perhaps stretched into one full court case. Which begs the question, why is our own familiar judge involved? Is it more along the lines of the UR-1 retrial, which wasn't quite official despite Aura's insistence? And why would Blackquill of all people need to give testimony as a witness?

My crack theory is that this 'piece of evidence' is in fact not a physical thing, it's a person who would need to give testimony in both a case Apollo is tackling in Japan and in a case that Phoenix is tackling in Khura'in, with both trials happening at the same time, but said witness only being capable of being in one place at a time. And who is this witness? Well, considering Blackquill is involved and also international shenanigans, what better candidate than the Phantom? Heck, there's even a dude with the Phantom's posture who is unsure of his own name in one of the Khura'in cases. (I'M SURE YOU SEE WHY THIS IS A CRACK THEORY)

Well, I guess that's true. It certainly won't be how it looks right now and they probanly showed this stuff to throw us off.

LOL, this is a crack theory indeed, but if it were indeed a person, I'd think it'd be more someone who actually travels between both Khura'in and Japanifornia, and that would explain how the witness saw something that is relevant to both, and therefore I think about Nayuta, but I do believe the evidence is probably just evidence and not a witness.

If it's an actual physical piece of evidence, one has to wonder why it can't just be duplicated in some way. For example, say it's a cellphone with fingerprints on it. Why not take fingerprint results and a picture of the cellphone instead? It'd have to be a very curious piece of evidence to require actual physical presence in the courtroom. A puzzle, perhaps?

Let me start by complimenting the new artwork for Larry (sorry, Laurice) and Edgeworth, although it's odd that Larry has not aged as much as Nick and Edgeworth, which is slightly disconcerting.

As for the reviews, they're pretty uplifting. The return to the AA12 style of an overarching story is a welcome change for the main series - although AAI2 didn't have the strongest cases, it held up as a cohesive experience more than any other game in the series, and it seemed very refreshing to not have any cases be purely 'filler'. What worries me more is the 'out-there' story developments. Yes, all the games have had big twists and turns, but the whole 'courtroom revolution' and 'illegal defense attorneys' is a bit too out-there even for someone like me, who doesn't mind the whole spirit-medium aspect of the games. Regarding Phoenix wearing his badge, maybe this is some sort of arbitration? It's odd for Udgey to be there in that case, but maybe he wants that extra bit of cash on the side.

I really don't think there's anything to worry about regarding spoilers, but as always with adventure games, it's always better to go on full media blackout if you really want to avoid spoilers.
