How'd the rest've y'all get into AA, anyway?

Friend got me the first game for Christmas. I had known of the game due to some mentions in EGM (they did a very short blurb on Gyakuten Saiban 3 when it came out in 2004 and then a longer article on Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney when it was coming to the US on DS) but paid it no mind as it seemed like something I wouldn't care for.

Eventually I tried it and I was hooked. I ended up importing the next two games knowing they had English dialogue options so I could start those ASAP. I went through a bit of a lull (due to AAI being kind of dull and GK2 never getting localized) but after the series bounced back with Dual Destinies I became a huge fan and now I'm a massive collector of Ace Attorney stuff. I try to get my hands on all sorts of AA swag.

I was in a Book Off (2nd hand game and bookstore in Japan) in 2003. I was browsing through the GBA games and came across the Capcom logo. It was a game I'd never heard of before, and I couldn't even read the Japanese title. But I liked Capcom, and the box cover really appealed to me, so I bought it. I played the game most nights after work, stumbling through lots of Japanese that I didn't know, with kanji that was too low-res to know how to look them up in a dictionary. Sometimes I'd get stuck forever trying to work out who I needed to talk to. Sometimes I'd be stuck on an interrogation for a week. (Often banging my head against a wall in frustration.) It took me about a year to finish the game.

I've probably played through it about 5 times since. Every time I replay the game, my Japanese has improved, and I understand the story and the characters a little better. Every time warmly familiar, and every time a new experience.

Thank you, Gyakuten Saiban!

Last Will and Testament by the Frantics. Check out the infamous "Boot to the Head" Phoenix Wrong video that started it all if you haven't already, or if you have, watch it again. First saw it myself back in 2008/9-ish? I dun remember. At the time, I just thought these lawyer characters were only that silly because it was a parody vid. Oh, how wrong I was...

But I dilly-dallied until mid-2012 to join the fandom by watching a playthrough of the first game on YT, and from there, I was hooked. A few months later, I searched for a forum site I could relate my newfound love of AA, and came upon this lovely community. I've been hanging around on here almost daily since then, Jesus.

*Sigh.*

I got my 15th anniversary "Illustration Archive". It just feels like a more compressed version of The Art of Gyakuten Saiban book from like...2007.

Not bad but definitely nothing I haven't seen in all my other art books.

In 2007 I read a Nintendo magazine, which had a small notice about JFA getting localized. I didn't pay it much mind. The next issue had a review of Apollo Justice. I assumed all games in the series had the word "Justice" in it and didn't get it was his name, so I wondered what kind of justice "apollo justice" was supposed to be and thought the name was ridicilous. There was also a stylus test where a stylus shaped like "the star lawyer Phoenix Wright's iconic pointing finger" got a bad review. I thought a lawyer game sounded a bit intriguing, but what I'd read about JFA being a "puzzle game" with a lot of reading sounded boring so I didn't think any more about it. Until...
Spring 2013 and I wanted to get into playing on my DS again, and broaden my horizons from mainly playing Super Mario games. I didn't know where to start but judging by what I remembered from the magazines I'd gotten the impression that Elite Beat Agents and Ace Attorney were generally considered good games so I got them for a small price from eBay. The rest, as they say...

This series taught me about so many different places I didn't know existed on a map. Take the countries of Borginia, Codohpia, Zheng Fa, the city of Labyrinthia...

I'm gonna ace the geography test I wish I took. Thanks, Capcom! :D

Yeah!!! Happy Birthday! Without this game, I wouldn't know on how awesome it is to play it and do my fan fiction Anime-like stories too. Love it! :D
