It's been a week since Dai Gyakuten Saiban 2 launched in Japan, and the public has spoken with their wallets... but they haven't said much, according to Media Create.

Combined, DGS2 and the DGS1+2 LE sold 79,499 units, the lowest debut for a game in the series since at least the GBA era, and about 60,000 behind DGS1. Famitsu notes this represents about a 40-60% sell-through of the game's initial stock.

Though this isn't very surprising given DGS2's status as a direct sequel and the relatively subdued marketing, it's still not a very pretty number. Whether or not these sales are in line with Capcom's expectations is an entirely different question, but it's hard to imagine the game overperformed.

Hmm, I find it interesting that the new Layton game looks to have similar numbers (only 108k after 3 weeks suggests a similar kind of launch). Then again, that was also released on phones, so the combined number is probably a lot higher.

Well, the only games that beat it are Dragon Quest and Splatoon... Even if it didn't do that great absolutely, it could be worse relatively.

I wasn't expecting a huge blow-out, since, as you said, it's the sequel to a spin-off, and the reaction to the original game was subdued to its ending... but my hope/expectation is (and has been) that as long as DGS2 follows through on what DGS1 set up (and it sounds like it does), DGS1+2 will do fine in the long run.

Agreed, and hey, the amazon reviews are looking much better this time round (minus the trolly day 1-2 ones). I do hope both games keep it steady. I still need to buy a copy, just waiting for a price drop.

I believe that those fans who did buy the game in the first week and experienced it would encourage other fans to look into it. It's what I would do (and am attempting to do to some degree, though it's hard for Western fans to 'look into' DGS2.)

This is a little sad... but I guess makes sense seeing as Japan had a somewhat mixed to negative reaction to the first game.

This is going to sound dumb, but, is the DGS1+2 bundle 2 cartridges or a compiled duology onto one? (Kinda want to order the games in and try them once the full translation patch is out)

I believe it's just two cartridges in one package.

If I remember an earlier post on here correctly, DGS1 in the 1+2 pack is just the best value version. Packaging is no different from that version.

Week two sales: DGS2 sold an additional 8,537 copies according to Media Create, an 85% drop.

While it's not unusual for AA games to have weak second weeks, DGS2 is still selling significantly worse than any game in the series from AA4 onwards.

Wow, that's... not good.

I really really really hope things turn around in the end, because DGS is the best thing to happen to the franchise in a while, and if it fails, it means we're probably no longer going to get anymore Takumi games, multi-game stories, or fun spin-offs.

Yikes, that's pretty bad. I wonder if this might have to do with lesser marketing presence + 3DS wrapping up and the Switch being so popular. I can understand why they are hesitant to localize this series, but I can't say whether the factors affecting the poor sales in Japan would affect sales in the West.
