Download

Download the full game !!!
(Mod edit: Apparently there is a bug with a certain piece of evidence not getting added, so you should download this version instead.)

28/07/10: The first full version of the game is released. It provides at least 7 hours of gameplay and features plenty of new and improved graphics, extra phone conversations with some of the characters, and an epic, highly difficult finale.

To play this part, you need to download PyWright (version 0.976, avoid using 0.980 for now) and put Turnabout Substitution in the games folder.

03/11/10: Part 3 is finally out!
"To play it, you need to download PyWright 0.951 and put ts_demo3 in the games folder.

Investigation day 2 (which, in my humble opinion, is the best part we've done so far) has much more optional dialogue than investigation day 1, so don't hesitate to "present" relevant evidence or profiles you think the characters might react to (especially in the first few scenes, in which there's not much the player is forced to do), you'll enjoy the game a lot more that way =).

If you're stuck, you can ask for help in this topic, as long as you post it inside spoiler tags. Let's just say there are lots of twists waiting for you in investigation day 2.

And before you ask, no, it's not a definitive version of part 3, as some sprites are still in need of work. The spriters did the best they could given our schedule, and I'll try to update the game everytime we get any new/improved sprites and animations working on PyWright.

This release makes Apollo Justice Case 5: Turnabout Substitution arguably the longest casemaker game ever, as well as the one with the most different characters, evidence, and locations.
I'll let you be the judge of the quality XD

In any case, I really hope you'll enjoy playing through this new part!"

06/19/09: Demo 2.0 released!
"At least 2h30 long, AJ:TS (demo 2.0) is the longest casemaker game made so far.
It's also rather difficult, so if you're stuck somewhere you can post about it here (please use spoiler tags).

Things you need to know before playing the game:
* if you've already played the first demo, the "ALREADYPLAYEDTHEFIRSTDEMO" file explains how to start where you left off
* saving should normally work, but can sometimes cause graphic bugs when loading. If for some reason the game crashes, you can post in spoiler tags where exactly it crashed and I'll show you the script that's needed to load the exact scene you were playing"

Despite initial problems with some of the graphics, the second demo was met with even more praise than the first, and helped the project gain more visibility.

12/26/08: Demo 1.0 released!
"I said no demo would be released before the game. I was LYING.
Merry Christmas Court-Records!

Turnabout Substitution is the first:
~ PyWright game
~ AA game on a major casemaker with a fully fonctional investigation phase
~ AA game on a major casemaker to feature several custom sprites / evidence / backgrounds"

About 1 hour long, the first demo was very well-received by fans.

If you have linux or mac, you'll have to get PyWright working (check http://forums.court-records.net/games/the-pywright-casemaker-thread-beta-nov30-t9544.html for more info) and then download ts_demo from the updater.py that comes with that. Oh, and if you already have PyWright you can download it from there as well, although it's only a few megs extra to get this version, lol.

If anyone has problems running the game, direct questions to the above thread as well, as it's more likely to be a PyWright problem than a TS problem.

Thanks ping' for deciding to release a demo :) I really enjoyed playing through it.

Great work so far, played it all the way through, I'm anticipating the full thing.

One thing I'd like to suggest is, when investigeting the Siamese cell, in stead of using sprites, use profile/evidence frames of the peoples sprites (like during the forensic or 3D Evidence parts of AJ, because when they show up in front of the bed it looks odd, and it works better for the ones who don't have animations yet.

Save and load should work properly now. After the game autoupdates, you will need to quit pywright and start it again for the fix to be loaded. If you haven't played Turnabout Substitution because of no ability to save, now is the time.

Ping sprang this surprise release a little fast for me to get save working again, sorry about that.

It looks good so far...

Will the sprites be animated and have more poses? It seems a little boring at the moment...
Also, I would make different out of court Judge sprites, as the normal ones don't reach the floor are really small, and look over your head...

But the dialogue is funny, the graphics are good, and I think this will be a fabulous game when complete :godot:

Writing down my random thoughts as I play through:

It would be nice if the custom sprites were animated, but I think that's already been mentioned...

Oh, and Heh. Flask.

...

WTF. CHARLEY THE PLANT IS A "HE", NOT AN "IT"!!!!!!!!! YOU IDIOT!!!!!

In the detention center the 2nd time, in the "Mysterious Visitor" when Apollo says "You didn't answer my question," Judge keeps on moving his mouth. Also, in the "Motive" Apollo says "Wait... y-you dont mean... h-he wasn't... was he?" (you're missing the ' in "don't").

I like how parentheses appear around something once you've done it. I like loading it up with a ton of parentheses! :D

Supreme Court Building? They're in D.C?!

Tch. Is Rhea out of her mind? Apollo is obviously trying to pass as a Roman god. (Wait, Rhea? Oooooooooooooooh! I finally get it  )

The double-part thingy with Strings' office doesn't work. The left half is fine, but the mouse doesn't work on the right half =\

Hmm.... is Fisher perhaps Franziska in disguise? (And this entire thing is just a ruse set up by Phoenix to test Apollo? xD)

Anywayz, very good!! I look forward to see how this progresses ^_^ It would be sweet if you release it part by part, instead of the entire thing when its finished, but whatever you want.

Also, my theories:
Spoiler:
I suspect the wig fell off Flasky when he was being carried away from the criminal.

No idea about the golden plate. Probably a password or something.

First off, the murderer:
Fisher - I doubt it. Having the main witness be the murderer? A bit too predictable...
Strings - Also doubt it. Too Gant-ish (Which would make him the murderer, but since you want it to be surprising, that makes him probably not the murderer)
The Blackmailer - This guy is the most suspicious. But of course, there's nothing that says that he and the murder are related. Plus, the one I'm really suspicious of is...
Rhea - She has a motive, and a strong conviction that Judge is innocent. Plus she pops up out of nowhere to help with the case. Until we meet more of the characters (assuming there are more), I'm going with her.

Yep, PyWright bug here. When a textbox automatically moves to the next message, it doesn't reset the speaking characters animation. Quick fix on the away, I am the quick fixit man. Just hope I don't trip over something as I speed through causing a new leak to spring up!

This is also a semi-bug but I left it, because I thought it was kinda cool that you can do things over and over and see how many times you did it, haha.

Ping', in the double screen examines, you should goto the spot right before the examine command instead of going to the "bg" command. In scene16examine:

Spoiler: "Old"
#-version-1
label top
bg ts/1stringsoffice

examine

should be:

Spoiler: "New"
#-version-1
bg ts/1stringsoffice

label top
examine

Otherwise, the scene will automatically reset to the left side after everything you look at. I'll get on those other bugs though, but this one is a bug in your script :)

Ok, I've got about 20 mins through, but I can't get any further. When Ema directs me to the crime scene I get this message.

undefined:
games/ts_demo/Turnabout substitution/scene7
"script scene 7"
(click to skip line)

except clicking doesn't do anything, I think the problem may be solvable by re-extracting the demo again.

edit: yep, extracting it did the job, will report tomorrow or later this evening.

"Apollo" has the same name in Greek and Roman mythology. So I was joking, saying he was Roman!Apollo instead of Greek!Apollo.

Ok, played through it now and it was very good. You kept the returning characters in character and the dialogue was well written and witty. The story itself is interesting and hooks you in. There were no major problems I found in the game, but there were a few small ones.

In Strings' office going from left to right causes the cursor to no longer respond to the mouse, forcing use of the control keys.

In Rhea's office and the police station investigating by clicking caused Apollo to read the 1st line of dialogue and then say "no clues here", making pressing the enter button mandatory.

Not a problem as such, but there is a real lack of things to investigate in the game, with the prison room only having 2 and String's room despite being very large only having 4. Although too much to investigate can make things irritating, I felt there was not enough in the demo.

Rhea's music is incredibly quiet.

Despite these minor complaints the effort put into this really shows, I'm looking forward to the next part.

My favourite dialogue in the game was the inspection of the chief of police, very amusing.

Spoiler: theory time
I'm guessing that Erlenmeyer is not the murderer from the serial killings, given that you suggested that he knew things about the case only the killer would know but didn't supply any other evidence.
Shawn and Erlenmeyer are most likely twins, and have most likely done the fabled twin swap a few times, probably in this case as well.
Nathan will have a key part to play in this case, and may or may not be dead.
Strings will probably have some involvement with the serial killings, I don't think he is the one that killed Erlenmeyer

btw, is that blonde-haired female attorney in Ceres' sprite topic going to be the prosecutor in this case? (I was wondering, since it's grouped with all the other sprites from here.)

Yes and no, I use that "group" to post all the basic poses of characters i completed for multiple games.
Although, it has been a while since i last updated it.

For example, The waitress sprite won't appear in Ping's fangame, but may appear in another.
About the blond haired woman, I'l leave Ping' to answer that one. :)

Now then Ping', You already heard my input on the demo before, but i'm still wondering about one thing.
The intro.
No images, movies, still frames, etc?
I have been experimenting with my own recently (putting it all together in movie format combined with music) , Now then, apart from the character sprites and backgrounds, perhaps something i can help with?

Spoiler: It's easier this way

I'm guessing that Erlenmeyer is not the murderer from the serial killings, given that you suggested that he knew things about the case only the killer would know but didn't supply any other evidence.

Hmm.... I dunno. Maybe. I didn't really understand what the Bust Killings were anyway. (Like what the killer did.)

Shawn and Erlenmeyer are most likely twins, and have most likely done the fabled twin swap a few times, probably in this case as well.

Who is Shawn again? ^^' (Is it that Fisher guy? 'Cause if it is, that could actually be it... could he be Flasky? Fisher doesn't have hair, and Flasky lost his wig.)

Nathan will have a key part to play in this case, and may or may not be dead.

I completely agree he'll have a key part. I doubt he'll turn out to still be alive.

Strings will probably have some involvement with the serial killings, I don't think he is the one that killed Erlenmeyer

Either with the serial killings or some other crime that gets completely tied up with this one.

Just finished the demo and I must say I really enjoyed it. Most of the jokes are really Ace Attorney style and I love the fact that the new backgrounds and characters you guys made are so fitting! I was actually trying to remember if you used only the backgrounds of the original games or if you had created some of them yourselves because they seem so genuine. The new characters fit in nicely as well
Spoiler:
(especially the new guy with the beard - don't remember his name :P - and the guard witness)
. Only improvements that need to be done is like the sprites so they actually seem to move and talk, other than that: can't wait to play the first court session! Good luck.

Everyone : Wow, thanks for all these nice reviews. I'll do my best to meet your expectations.

Spoiler: serial killings

In Rhea's office and the police station investigating by clicking caused Apollo to read the 1st line of dialogue and then say "no clues here", making pressing the enter button mandatory.
> I'll check the script to see what's wrong.

Not a problem as such, but there is a real lack of things to investigate in the game, with the prison room only having 2 and String's room despite being very large only having 4. Although too much to investigate can make things irritating, I felt there was not enough in the demo.
> You're absolutely right. Don't worry, there will be more in the final version.

Rhea's music is incredibly quiet.
> I know, I'm not quite sure how to fix it though.

Oh, and your theories are just brilliant. Mostly wrong (like every other theory on this thread) but brilliant nonetheless.

Ceres : The intro isn't ready since I don't have any drawn art yet... apparently it's more difficult to make movies when you don't have images to begin with. But I could certainly use your help once this is dealt with.

Peter : You need to thank Ceres for his incredible work on this demo. I couldn't have done anything like this on my own.
