DerxwaKapsyla here, and I bring with me a small project I'm working on on the side while working on the other things I'm doing.

It's called Shin Gyakuten Touhou: PyWright Port or as it is known in translation, Aya Shameimaru: Touhou Attorney.

Shin Gyakuten Touhou is a fangame developed by Suikayasan on a Visual Novel engine. It is a crossover between the Gyakuten Saiban/Ace Attorney series and the Touhou Project series. The game was translated by D.Forza over at the Shrinemaiden Forums. I would like to stress this point instantly: I do not intend, nor do I want, nor could I imagine taking credit for any of their hard work. All I wanted to do was port it to, what I thought, was a more accessible engine.

I'll break the post up into segments, so it's easier to read and doesn't scroll on forever.
Segment 1: Why I'm porting the game

I suppose I should actually get into why I'm porting it, shouldn't I? The reasons are simple enough to explain.

Reason 1 - Accessibility: The original Shin Gyakuten Touhou was on a Visual Novel engine that, if you attempted to run it on a standard computer, it wouldn't run. The game required the user to have their computer in native Japanese locale mode - not even AppLocale would work. Porting the game to the PyWright engine would allow people to play it regardless of the default locale of their machine. Not to mention, I've heard PyWright is supported on Android Devices, so I figured people not only get to play it on their PCs, but can play it on the go as well (But granted, I have little knowledge about the Android version).

Reason 2 - Familiarity and the Pursuit of Knowledge: I've been itching to try out the PyWright engine for a while, in the unlikely chance that I'll ever actually work on an Ace Attorney fan-case. The engine is actually surprisingly easy for me to understand (for the time being) once I got the basics handled.

Reason 3 - Burned out: I'm working on other projects, larger ones which dominate more of my time, which go by the name of Touhoumon: Faith & Prayer Version and Touhou x Command & Conquer: War of the Rice, alongside an original project, The Omniverse Project, and a commissioned game called Touhoumon Underground. It seems like I've taken on more than I can chew, but I switch between projects back and forth making progress in strides with the development teams helping me. Unfortunately, my team and I are a bit burned out presently, and I'm giving us a break... But I needed something to work on in my break, a fun little project which I didn't have to commit to entirely but would still like to do to help me regain my energy for the other projects.

Reason 4 - Promotion: I love this game, it's a fun little niche game in the several fangames Touhou Project gets, and an interesting series of fancases for the Ace Attorney style of gameplay. In ties with making the game more accessible, I wanted to show it off to more people who would now have the ability to play it without needing to change System Locales. I also thought it was quite interesting and unique in its own way, as it took the commonly used and general standard of an Ace Attorney game, and upended it - that is to say, none of the cases in this game (and it's two sequels, to my knowledge) are murder cases. And they managed to pull it off really well, in my opinion.

I intend to keep this port as pure to the original as possible, with only very minor differences for the sake of the engine change (Ie: Location of the Court Record button, a testimony which is minor altered, the penalty system, etc). Dialogue will remain the exact same, only rarely will I interject new lines, and they will be for the sake of transitional lines (for example, when pointing out the wrong segment in a picture or a wrong piece of evidence at a certain question). I've added some minor enhancements to the game, but they aren't anything that will be like "HEY THIS CHANGES THE ENTIRE SYSTEM", it's just asthetical changes and minor ones at that.


Section 2: Information about the game itself
Now that I've covered why the port exists, allow me to actually get into the summary if the game.

Shin Gyakuten Touhou is a remake of the first game in the Gyakuten Touhou series of fan-games. You play the role of Aya Shameimaru, writer of the Bunbunmaru Newspaper, a name known widely across the vast land that is Gensokyo. Gensokyo, in the past up to recent, has settled conflicts using a form of Bullet-Based Cobat known as Danmaku. One day, an incident happens where someone doesn't want to resolve the conflict using danmaku! As a result of it, Gensokyo adopts a new resolution system, one used in the world beyond the boundary - The Bench Trial System. As a result of proposing the idea, Aya Shameimaru gets roped into being Gensokyo's very first Defense Attorney, and she is now tasked with proving the innocence of her clients, all while attempting to undercover the truth of the cases she is assigned to.

The game plays out exactly the same as an Ace Attorney game would. Someone commits a felony, someone gets accused of it, you defend the accused in a game of "Who Done It" while hunting the truth. Unlike an Ace Attorney game proper, there are no murders in this game, not a one.

Shin Gyakuten Touhou has three main game cases, plus a fourth bonus case which was not present in the original Gyakuten Touhou 1. For the sake of documentation and explanation, the cases will be listed here, but under spoiler tags.

Case 01 - A Glass Eye to the Sky (Progress: Ported and tested)

A camera left out in the forest, broken by a mischievous fairy - and right in front of its owner no less! Not to mention, the owner of the camera has no interest in settling the conflict with a Danmaku Battle. The case seems pretty open and shut, but maybe there's something being overlooked? Meanwhile, Aya, instigating the trial system for her own benefit, finds out that there are some strings attached! And with this case comes the start of Gensokyo's first trial, and the rise of its first defense attorney!


Case 02 - Marisa's Aesthetic (Progress: Not Started)

An explosion occurs at the Eientei Medical Facility, and a pot is later found out to be stolen from its owner. Around the same time, a magician with a very strong track record as a "borrower" happens across the scene, and gets arrested as a suspect on that fact alone! Aya, taking on her second case as a defense attorney, discovers that this case will be neither Easy nor Normal, as she fights to prove the innocence of an already established thief.


Case 03 - Like the Moon's Rays (Progress: Not Started)

After a rowdy festival one night at the Hakurei Shrine, one of the party inhabitants winds up poisoned due to sake overdose. This wouldn't be a problem if it wasn't Suika Ibuki, an oni that can hold her sake better than she can her own weight, and if the sake that poisoned her wasn't the dreaded Oni Slayer Sake. The only person who could be the culprit is who poured the deadly drink... Reimu Hakurei?! Could the Shrine Maiden of Paradise have actually been the one to put Suika into a coma? The truth of the matter is hidden deep behind the scenes...


Extra Case 04 - Truth Hidden in the Rain (Progress: Not Started)

One particularly rainy afternoon, a theft happens in the middle of a high stakes Shogi game at a famed kappa inventor's house. The stolen item? The other half of the wager in that shogi game! The culprit is found not too far from the scene with the stolen goods in her pocket. The evidence is stacked up against her; the case looks dismal. Using the newly conceived concept of forensics science, Aya must prove this defendant's innocence in the biggest turnabout of her career!

I figure I shouldn't have to say that for Ace Attorney, but it never hurts to cover all bases. This goes double for Shin Gyakuten Touhou. Gyakuten Saiban/Ace Attorney and all related characters are the property of Capcom Co., Ltd., and are used without permission. No profit is being made from the distribution of this game.
Touhou Project and associated characters are the property of Team Shanghai Alice. While Touhou doujin games are allowed to be sold for a profit, this port is not being monetized.
Shin Gyakuten Touhou and all of its assets was made by Suikayasan. The English Translation was done by N-Forza over at Shrinemaiden forums. No profit or credit is being made off of their work.

In the original game (if I wanna try it out in the original engine) is it like Ace Attorney standard gameplay? Or is it Ever17-type visual novel story click and watch?

First, yeah, it's Ace Attorney gameplay. As for your other question, it might be a good idea to look up quick bios of the characters that play more important roles in the cases, but you don't need to be an expert on the series.

The entire game was initially in Japanese, however as I mentioned above, D-Forza over at the Shrinemaiden forums took on the project of translating it to English for those who could not understand the Japanese language. The game plays like a standard Ace Attorney game. Case 1 is your usual Introduction to Mechanics., Case 2 and onward are standard fare - investigate areas, collect evidence, go to court, and combat the prosecution's claims with your evidence and find the truth. The only big difference in the end is that none of the cases are murder cases, and that for some reason this game relies more heavily on pressing statements than it does presenting actual evidence, but that was just my take on it.

As for needing knowledge of Touhou, none is required. It does not hurt, it can only help. The fangame itself describes what the main characters are well enough that you should be able to have a decent grasp on what they do just by in-game dialogue alone. In essence, think of it as an Ace Attorney fangame that introduces an entirely new cast of characters, because that's literally all it boils down to.
