Now that the demo is out, I'm a little disappointed that Portsman's French name seems to be completely suplerfluous. Not that I wanted him to be like Jean, but why go out of the way to give him a name like Jacques in order to have the S for "sportsman" except in Jacques the S is silent...!? They might as well have called him "Jacks."

Spoiler:
I'm just disappointed that they didn't name him "Jacques Strapp."

Now, now, it was only part of the first case. There's still a chance they might sneak in an inappropriate joke or two.

I guess it's not really a spoiler, but it is related to the demo, and some people haven't played it yet, so that's why I put it in a tag.

Dude, seriously?! The game's been out here for a whole WEEK now, and no one's had anything to say about this guy since then? Well then, guess I'll go ahead!

When I first saw his character art and heard the description (something about how he "considers himself to be Edgeworth's rival"), I was just like, "Uggh, some stupid wannabe trying to outdo Edgeworth? Don't even try, man. Don't even try. And change out of that stupid pink shirt!"

All it took to convince me of his awesomeness was that expression on his face when he kills Buddy Faith. That and the fact that I knew he was the killer from the get-go actually made me like him (strange, hmm?). I loved the way he kept playing with his coat (at parts, it actually looked to me like he was flashing!) and spreading his arms out in a victory pose. His smooth denials of guilt and his comebacks in the face of defeat were classic AA killer material, too.

All in all, he turned out to be one of my favorite characters in the game. Quite the "turnabout," no?

As for the thread title's question, the answer is: NEITHER! We already know real men wear pink (just ask Edgeworth), so there's nothing wrong with continuing the trend! :tennis:

I had a thought earlier. A spoilery thought.

Spoiler: all game
About the whole "names people Jim" thing. We've seen from the opening of case 1 that Jacques is a fairly cold-hearted killer--he doesn't seem to express any remorse for having killed Buddy, other than getting caught. Of course we don't see quite enough of him to judge for certain what he really thought of his "partner," but if he was one of Alba's plants from the start, he probably knew that at some point he was going to have to make an exit. Do you suppose he assigns people the name "Jim" as a means of dehumanizing the people he knows he's going to have to kill eventually? Keeping them at arm's length to avoid forming a truly personal connection?

And if so, what happened to Jim 1 and Jim 2!?

I think Croik might be on to something.

EDIT: Although, the game never hinted to the fact that he offed them. Perhaps both were just more cautious.

Spoiler:
Sounds like a plausible explanation of his nature, but how could he know for sure that he would eventually have to kill his "Jims"? Buddy only died because he was in the wrong place at the wrong time (around Edgeworth's office when Jacques was ransacking it). Plus, why is there any guarantee that Jacques would have to make an exit at some point? As long as he kept up his cover, I wouldn't foresee any problems with him staying as long as he was needed there.

Not trying to needlessly criticize, just wondering.

By the way, it just occurred to me (and someone's probably already said this), but I think I just realized why Jacques thinks the name "Jim" fits so well with his name. You see, the "Jacques" loves to hang out with his "Jim." Geddit? :redd:

Spoiler:
Well I suppose it wouldn't have to be that he *knew* he'd have to kill him someday. But from what we've seen, Alba's plants go to great lengths to disguise themselves, whether in appearance or behavior. It's not easy to be around people all the time and lie to them. Maybe for Jacques, seeing Buddy as "yet another dupe" (aka "Jim") made it easier for him to keep his cover and not be conflicted with guilt.

True.

Very likely.

:tennis: Hey, Jim, pass it! Can't make the winning point if you don't get the ball over here, yeah?

Jerkface. :redd:
Spoiler:
For that matter, I wonder what his "Jims" thought of him. Could they have seen through the facade, or were they clueless till the end? ("The end" not necessarily meaning their deaths, of course.) Personally, I wouldn't take too kindly to some prosecutor/athlete who's full of himself foisting some arbitrary name on me.

God, and that "flashing" sprite just killed me. Killed. Me. It was so dorky and so suggestive at the same time. And the number of times he did that in one testimony alone was lulzworthy.

Spoiler:
What's great to is if he does his flashing sprite in the middle of testimony, and you leave that line up to look at your organizer or something, he will keep repeating it forever.

#1. Makes me wish they'd had some sort of confrontation (maybe I should say a longer confrontation).

#2. Buddy's on edge! Wonder why...

#3. Nice art, clean art. :phoenix:

#4. "Who's up for a game?" :tennis:

#5. Sorry, Edgeworth, but you got no chance of winning against THE MAN! Not at basketball, anyway.

#6. "The power of sexy compels you! My logic is sound!" :tennis:

Thanks for the art!

Totally. Honestly, when I first saw the art for Jacques I thought he was gonna be a pretty stupid character, but there was just so much about him that was likable. His reactions and his mannerisms and his attitude...What's not to love? I just wish we could have delved a bit more into his backstory. Many of the characters in the game suffered from this, honestly. None of the characters really had any big monologues about why they did what they did and whatnot.

I guess that leaves more up to our imaginations. :tennis:

I lol'd profusely.

Anyway, I picture Buddy as a long-suffering companion to Jacques who internally heaves a sigh whenever he calls him "Jim" or has him shoot hoops with him. In a way, being killed was an act of mercy. :C
