Professor Layton and Luke Triton wake up aboard a carriage heading for Labyrinth City. The old lady merchant doesn't know anything about how they ended up here.
After they're dropped off, they're left to explore the city. That knight they meet just happened to be browsing a weapons shop. (Layton comments on how unwieldy it is to carry so much equipment, and the knight blocks him off, worried about his own training regimen.)
Here's a skip. They meet with Mahone, who invites them to visit an old friend who owns a bakery. There, they can discuss their predicament in more detail. But when they stop by, the old lady isn't around. Instead, there are her enthusiastic employees, Phoenix Wright and Maya Fey. They too have known Mahone for a while (5 years, apparently). "And this is Nick, my number one apprentice!"
Another skip. Phoenix and Maya enter the courtroom for the first time and witness a woman be plunged into flames upon her verdict. By this point, Mahone is already locked up in her cage. When asked to introduce himself, Phoenix replies, "I am... Wright of the bakery!"
Another skip. This cross-examination is the same as the one shown in the TGS stage show. They're discussing the order of events that led up to the "Meramin" spell and the disappearance of the thieves. Just as Phoenix declares Mahone innocent, an unexpected fifth witness appears to testify.
