Because I obviously can't wait 6-7 days until the UK release date, I want to vent out a review-in-hindsight in this thread while no one's looking.

I've been replaying through this game recently, and while some of the original magic has been lost, pun intended, it still has such lovable characters, witty humor, and an engaging general theme that I can't put it down (except at save points for a good break once in a while). Also, I don't care how many times I go through the special episodes. The mood whiplash to the actual game stands out so much that it's hilarious. Of course, the actual dialogue is funnier.

And yet, in this second time through, certain moments feel more like hassles to get through than otherwise. They give me all the more reason to hate the fact that there is no "skip" button, aside from passing the brief intros that come up when loading a save. Also, given how simple the puzzles feel, I don't take nearly as much delight in solving them as I do with challenge puzzles in other Layton games. (Exception is with the sliding block puzzles; those ones frustrate me to no end when I can't figure out how to reduce my number of moves.)

It also disappoints me that there is no ladder/stepladder discussion to address, but that's like complaining I don't have enough chocolate chips in my cookie. *munch* (I would like more, though this one is rather stuffed with them already.)

I still wish there were more special episodes and content to download, but nah, this game's been out in Japan for more than a year now.

I look forward to what people post on TVtropes once they get their share.

I think that's a given considering what kind of game it is, and it also has the Layton stuff in it. I've never played a Layton game twice because I just can't get myself to do it. I know it won't be the same the second time. With Phoenix Wright I've played every game at least twice, but that was with six months in between at least.

I think a good way to re-experience one-way-trip games is to lay them down for a long, long while upon completion and then get back to them at some other point in time, because sometimes the time-span helps you forget a couple of moments in the game, so it feels like you're rediscovering them again :3

Are there any unique interjections besides, "Objection"?

Since when is "Objection!" unique?

Anyway, this would be better suited for the "I just want to ask one thing" thread, but to answer, there are five standard shouts in the game: "Objection!", "Hold it!", "Take that!", "Got it!" (assuming they translate "koko da" the same way they do in DD) and something like "Just a minute!" ("chotto" in Japanese). There's also that one shout of "Welcome!", and Layton uses "Eureka!" (assuming they translate "kore da" the same way they do in AAI.)

Lol! That's great! Definitely not what I expected. It's weird that his "Welcome!" has more emotion behind it than his "Objection!"

Agreed, but I think I can get used to his objection. Sam Riegel was pushing his voice way too hard in DD IMO and it just didn't have the right kick to it. I think I might end up liking this new guy's version better, but we'll see.

Not to change the subject, but I wanted to add that I'm really glad they haven't bombed us with pre-release info (aside from the lack of your NA release date) like Capcom did with DD. It really spoiled the experience: "Pearls is in it.:.." "...and Edgeworth" "...AND KLAVIER TOO!" and they showed off three cases before releasing it. I just felt like there wasn't much left for a surprise when you finally got the game and it became more predictable because of it.

Aside from those new english video-snippets I know next to nothing about what's actually in the full PLVPWAA game, and that makes me so super excited, because I know I'm in for a treat!

I did give myself plenty of time; it's been almost a year since I first completed it, so yes, I've forgotten some of the things that had happened in certain chapters.

I can say, though, once you complete the game, it gives you the option to either start back at a place where you can go back for puzzles or the start of the final testimony to watch the ending again. The second time before the credits roll, a certain cameo disappears for a running gag instead, and Nick's struggling seems all the more hilarious. Worth it.

I do hope "chotto" will be localized as something simpler, like "Hold up!" so it better rolls off the tongue.

By the way, will there be a separate thread for gathering the localized names together, as done in the DD forum? It still irks me that we don't know Chuuken and Kuroune's English names yet...

I hated Sam Riegel's voice in the cutscenes and thought the standard voice clips were ok. They started to grow on me after a while, though. However, I do think that this new guy's voice in the "cutscenes" is better than Riegel's, but his interjections are worse.

I wasn't part of these forums before DD, so I mostly stayed away from pre-release info. I only saw the first trailer and a few snippets from interviews. I knew there was a courtroom bombing, Phoenix would be back, Athena was a new character, the Mood Matrix was the new gimmick, and that Gumshoe wouldn't be in the game. I found out very shortly before the release date that Apollo would also be a playable character and I did hear that Pearl would be in the game, but I thought she was DLC exclusive

I know this is probably a really stupid question, but...

When would we normally get a launch trailer? Midnight? Sometime tomorrow? This evening?

It just seems like the hype has completely died out for this game. Even DD had more, and that wasn't a Layton game. And, I want something to watch endlessly before my copy arrives tomorrow... :(

It's assumed to be around midnight, which is to say... it may be available now in certain countries... half an hour later for the UK.

Edit: It's here. Get downloadin', folks!

Edit 2:
It's hard to describe the mixed feelings I have right now. On one hand, I'm ecstatic to know that many of my fellow fans on these forums will return for the hype this game has been carrying for 2 or 3 years now. I've been waiting to talk all about this game, but the issue over spoilers can make it difficult to convey the whole message. On the other hand, since I am not currently in the position to purchase another copy of the game (and probably won't be for a long time, even if the US release date is in summer this year), I am left dependent on what you guys are willing to share. It certainly won't be efficient for me to catalog localization trivia in case I plan to tackle a future language study project some time.

Why am I such a nut about these things? I suppose I find that learning about languages and their roles in fiction through a single source is quick, easy, and effective - and in this case, just plain fun. I could write a thesis on why video games are excellent examples to use as study material in education and should be implemented more often, but I won't. Who'd read it anyway? We're here to talk about puzzles and mysteries... in a world of magic.

Good luck with that logic thing, everyone!

I was really hoping for the person that Did Phoenix Wright's voice to do Wright's voice.... but I guess not.... That's the only thing I do not like but gotta bear with it.... And this must be either before Justice For All or Trails And Tribulations or after one of those games.

I am literally confused as to how Wright and Maya got into the bakery business for 5 years when it's clear they got sucked into the book and have no damn recollection of how. DO NOT SPOIL IT! I wish to find out in video.

I have about as much of an idea as you do lad, so it isn't really spoilers. Nonetheless, I'll put it in spoiler tags.
Spoiler: My hypothesis
I've reached the middle of Chapter 1 (before Layton & Company depart for the Great Archive). Currently, I think that they're under a spell, and so are the villagers. This is the evidence I have to suggest this:
1. At some point, Luke says he's a Young English Gentleman, at the time, I thought Phoenix and Maya were pretending to be normal citizens so as to not get into trouble. But then, Maya says "inglish, where have I heard that before?". If she were truly trying to have a normal life that's a stupid thing to say, because none of the villagers know what that is.
2. Afterwards, we learn that Espella's memories conflict with everyone else's, it seems she's the only one who remembers Carmine, maybe, it's for the same reason that everyone "remembers Phoenix and Maya for the last 5 years" when she doesn't.
3. Going back to the "inglish" the same way Espella had a vague recollection of Carmine, so did Maya regarding London.
Therefore, I conclude that the village was hit by a spell. For some reason unbeknownst to me (but probably has something to do with leaving Labyrinthia) Espella "kind of" retained her memories of London and past Labyrinthia.

Now, if anyone wants to confirm or deny my theory feel free, I don't really mind Layton spoilers (I already know they're going to present us with a Layton style outrageous turn of events that if any other game pulled we'd call it poppycock and throw it out the window). Although, I'd rather not have any court cases spoiled.

And like a classic Layton game, things just happen with little explanation for anything that isn't exclusive to the cases until late in the game, so keep circulating those theories! >:D

Spoiler: And to that hypothesis
It is a spell of sorts, and it's exclusive to the city. But what sort of spell exists only within a city and not outside its walls...?

Oh, my. Did I say "outside"? Oh, perish the thought! There's no such thing as "outside" in this story. :3

I played through the entire game during the weekend (boy I am so tired now, but it was a great ride) and there are some things I seem to have missed or maybe they just weren't explained.

Spoiler:
Right in the beginning there are a few mysteries which never seem to be solved. So how exactly did Darklaw transform into a bird when she kidnapped Sophie in Layton's office? And who assaulted Olivia on the ship?

I guess for the first scenes in London they just don't bother with an explanation (because there is none) and justify it by being necessary for the players to be introduced to "magic".

Spoiler:
Though Darklaw changing into a bird is never really explained, it's assumed the familiars (er, what are they called here?) that were flying around with her weren't real. Or at least, they weren't flying. It's not hard to imagine some people in jetpacks or something cruising through the air.

Also, the question over the statues is addressed in a Special Episode, so look forward to it.

And it's probably Darklaw who assaulted Olivia. They didn't see anyone because it was dark, but it's likely Darklaw was hiding in that crate, which was left open by the time the police showed up.

OK, went on YouTube and saw the opening cutsecne for the game and I think they NAILED Phoenix's voice. It sounds almost exactly what I think his voice should sound like, AND I still think it works with Sam Regal's voice as older Phoenix. Maya's voice however... I said when the Nintendo direct trailer came out (the one where Maya's voice could be heard, but under the speaker's voice and even then it was only three words) I said that what little I heard sounded off. Never would have expected I would say the same thing after hearing her speak full sentences. It just sounds too grown-up. I would have liked to have seen her voiced by someone with a slightly younger voice; ya know, make her sound like a 19 year old should. It is not bad, but a little distracting.

Spoiler:
My biggest lingering question is how the heck Layton's apartment wall was blown off if the witches in the prologue weren't actually real. But oh well, whatever. I'm not all that iffy when it comes to plot holes, but it does take away some credibility to what is otherwise a fantastic story IMO.

The real question is...
Spoiler:
Was it ever blown open in the first place? :o I mean, everything looks tidied up by the time Layton and Luke return to Gressenheller.

Either that, or Darklaw popped in through the entrance by picking the lock and her assistants hiding in the shadows turned on a massive fan. She then crashed through the window because it was an old window, and caught a ride on a hang glider sitting on the roof. Let's just pretend the hallucinogens were strong enough to make them overlook a giant fan outside the office and a hang glider sitting on the roof.

:P

Well, they looked in that book before all that witchcraft took place. I guess something weird happened there.
Spoiler:
As to why a single glance in a book for a few seconds is enough to put into someone into a deep hallucination, I dunno. I think Darklaw & co. did have those bells with them, so they could easily knock Espella out, but the sound didn't affect Layton or Luke maybe because they didn't take in enough of that gas to be knocked out.
Or something. :3

Spoiler:
Perhaps that book itself released the gas upon being opened?

Still, I can't figure out how the heck would they manage to drag an unconscious grown man and a girl along with him from the courthouse.

Also, the more I play this (watch videos actually, but whatever) the more disappointed I am with Dual Destinies. What I mean by that is story itself... and the fact almost every witness in PLvsPW:AA has voiced parts, while DD didn't even have Trucy...

Maybe it's because witch trial have bigger potential, or so...?

In general I thought PLvsPWAA was more techincally impressive than DD, aside from maybe the core animations for the 3D models, but PLvsPWAA has so many models that it's more understandable they're a little less polished sometimes (Dat Phoenix objection animation >__>) But yeah, the voiced interjections are so great, but I'm thinking it's a budget-issue since it wasn't like that in Dual Destinies. After all the OST for PLvsPWAA is much more robust considering it has real live instruments rather than those sampled orchestral elements in DD. Moreover I also wasn't very impressed by DD's use of cinematic camera angles in courtroom segments. They kinda reveal how empty and sterile the coutroom looks in both games, but PLvsPWAA has so many more different cinematic angles and for the most part you saw new surprises in every single trial segment.

As for the story I agree too. I thought Dual Destinies was good until Case 2 was over, and Case 3 had some cool ideas too, but the crime was really overblown and then I was very disappointed with case 4+5 in general. I feel PLvsPWAA is better than the sum of its parts more so than Dual Destinies was, but both games definitely have their moments.

Simple.

"Hm? Where are you people taking these two?"

"Oh, please excuse us, Constable. These two were part of our costume party, but they ended up getting really drunk, so we'll just take them away now."

"Oh, I see. That explains why the defence seemed so cuckoo this morning."

Just finished the game and I really liked it more than DD.
However, there are some things I don't understand or things which are sort of unbelievable. First, as already mentioned, I wonder how Phoenix and Maya disappeared from the court room. Also,
Spoiler: Final Trial
I think it's strange that Kira doesn't say anything about the big machines in Labyrinthia. In fact, she testified that she was surprised how there are no machines as opposed to the Woods even though she should be able to see them.

Other than that,
Spoiler: Layton Games 1-3
they pulled the "This town is a lie!" card again, like in every other Layton game I played. But oh well, seems like some sort of tradition, not gonna complain.

The best part of the game is undeniably
Spoiler: Final Trial
the Storyteller's "You son of a witch!"
That and the OST. The OST is great.
And last but not least I cannot believe that they actually
Spoiler: Post credits
made a 3D model of Edgeworth just for the sake of it. And he has a voice too!

Spoiler:
If you were wondering, those new anime cutscenes come in handy. The thing is, some of them are meant to be illusions: like the one in the beginning of 5-3, where it shows Courte dead and the three friends standing over her. We all know that's not what happened, and the same thing applies in the cutscenes in this game. For instance, take when Phoenix and Maya disappear from the defendant lobby. They seem to vanish, don't they? Just another cliffhanger cutscene. Most likely, if it's in a cutscene, it's meant to be like you are also under the spell of the "magic" and you see what the other characters are seeing.

That's just my theory, though.

I AM IN SCHOOL, SO IF I END UP NEVER POSTING HERE AGAIN THAT'S WHY :larry:

One small thing I like in this game was how the saving-sound differed depending on whether one was saving in a Layton- or Phoenix-moment, and also that the bli-de-blip-blip-sounds when they are talking arethe same as in their respective games.
