What's funny is, I started a sprite edit just like that quite a while ago, when I was using only Paint
I managed to do Phoenix (and lol, I put the exact same expression on his face) and then ditched it when I couldn't figure out how to get Iris in his arms 
I think it would work. If Phoenix/Iris had taught us anything it's that real beauty is found within. :3
You have a point, Chloe. Even though it would be quite....scary if Iris was a..uh, monster, I think their feelings still wouldnt falter
