Now, what I think is, at the end of JFA, you know that the game comes with a "good" ending, where everyone is re-united and they all do they silly joke of giving Phoenix the bills.
However, they also feature the bad ending, which involces Phoenix running away from court, never seeing Maya again.
Now, this is where it gets confusing. I believe the series branches off from here. The good ending leads diredtly to GS3, pretty linear enough.
The bad ending ends Phoenix's career, since he accused the wrong person of being guilty, and lost his best friend. This would seem logical enough to assume at this time he became Hobohodo, and left court forever. How he knows Garyuu is a mystery.
So, overview.
PW:AA- PW: JFA- (Good Ending)->GS3
(Bad Ending)-> GS4.
This more or less has some flaws I'm sure, but it was something I thought up with my free time today.

Besides, all the promotions for GS4 have been "7 years after GS3." If they meant to go off GS2 it would be "8 years after GS2."

Phoenix became so good at his job that he made so much money and decided to part ways with it. Maya eventually went to become the head of Kurain with no hard feelings toward Nick. So Phoenix decided to become a poker player and a pianist just for the fun of it.
Then again this wouldn't make alot of sense since Phoenix claims he's been playing poker for 7 years. So whatever caused him to leave happened shortly after GS3.

Case 1-5 had also a sort of glorified Game over screen. If you show the piece of leather too early to Gant, Ema will be accused for murder along with Lana. Phoenix will scream "NOoooo!" till the game over screen pops up. I think the creators are adding other options to get the guilty verdict besides losing "!" marks and lifebar points, by just doing something wrong.
I don't really know about this theory, I don't think they did all these magnificent characters in Gs3 for nothing. I doubt it.

Out of curiosity, does GS3 have a similar Game Over thing in any case? I know there's the one in GS3-2 where you can lose by just pressing the wrong thing, but is there one in the last case?
