My theory is, that there is no real reason. Or, rather, I heard it's been confirmed that it was because of a case, but I don't get that answer. Why does there need to be a "reason"? His name's "Phoenix Wright", not "Defense Attorney". What I'm trying to say is, maybe he just realized that it was a corrupt field, or maybe he even just decided he'd have more fun with his life playing poker. People don't always need to justify their actions with a reason. And before you say it, this would be a pretty good plot twist too; it may seem like a bit of a let-down, but it's at least a bit more philosophical than "He lost a case and everyone died."

But it's a game, they will have to put some reason in, this isn't real life where someone just thought "hey I'll just do something else now", isn't he the defendant to a murder also? I'm sure they will have a backstory otherwise it'd be pretty stupid. :P Games have plots and backstories.
