“Failure.” Came the words from the fireplace.
“What?” Kristoph sputtered. “NO!” He suddenly roared. “This is not real, none of it. I-I-I’m just imagining things. That’s it. This is some sort of…..”
“You can’t win………” Came a voice from the grandfather clock.
Kristoph pivoted in horror. His clock was talking, along with the fireplace. It told him he couldn’t win.
“Win what?” Kristoph asked as he fiddled with his cufflinks. He suddenly came to the haunting realization that someone or something was in fact talking to him. “What is it that I c-can’t win?”
“Respect.” Came the whisper from the fireplace, in a voice that made the top of Kristoph’s right palm burn. He gasped in pain.
“I have respect. I have everything!” He screamed as he tried to ignore the blinding pain on his hand. “Stop!” He cried, the pain becoming unbearable.
“Will you listen?” Asked the grandfather clock.
“Yes.” Kristoph grunted.
“Good.” Whispered the fireplace.
