I KNEW I HAD A PICTURE LIKE THIS SOMEWHERE.

Spoiler: For a wee bit of blood...
Image

I actually have a LOT of pictures like this...but 99% of them are Apollo related. ^^;;

Anyway...Klavier amuses me. :D I'm not entirely sure why, but he really does. His first line in the game really doesn't help matters (I suppose you can tell where my interests lie, even though I do understand that that line could mean any number of very innocent things).

So, yeah. I came to deliver the pic in response to earlier conversation. ENJOY~

-His job is awesome
-Fuck he can air guitar in court whenever he wants to!

I think I proved my point.

I can't see why people don't like Klavier.
He's a nice person and at the same time a good prosecutor, and not to mention that he's the first prosecutor who's (first) motive was to find the truth, not something silly like getting guilty verdicts for his record.
Anyway, I know this post is old, but...

You just answered your own question. We people who don't like him think he's too boring of a character. He feels like a cardboard cutout with no depth to his character or even any reason to care about him as anything more then being the prosecutor rival.

... I think Capcom did that on purpose. :yuusaku:
Klavier's lack of character is caused by his background not being explored, like Apollo. I think it's more then likely both of their stories will be shown in GS5. Also, not having a background actually makes him a bit interesting. All of the prosecutors before him had their stories told (except for Payne, but...) in the first game they appear in.
Not having his story told yet is a bit refreshing and also adds some mystery to his character, too.

Having no background or depth only makes it interesting because the reader is in control, making him into what they want him be, than liking what was given. I've seen plenty of fanfiction that depicts Klavier as various types of character, but I've yet to see any hints of these personas in the actual game, and while imagination is a great thing, it's a bad thing when basic characterization has to be left up to the fans.

While the sequel could expand on his character, we don't know that for certain. They could also just send him out on a bus and bring in the new prosecutor instead. If you agree that his character was left vague so we can see it in full in the sequel, then give us time to see if he can become likable in our eyes.

Post subject:  Re: Klavier Gavin: Awesome or FUCKING AWESOME?

so i came in this thread and saw the topic was relevant to my interest since you guys were talking about why people don't like klavi. well i just actually wrote why in another thread. and basically it is what others have said. Klavier is sort of seen as no depth and an incomplete character. I really really hope he comes back in another game just so they can flesh out his character more.

even when he did show emotions it was rather strange and superficial (daryan's trial). not only that but when he first said he was looking for the truth i was surprised. but then one one side he's a diva.

in the end, though i hated kristoph for quite some time i now really like kristoph because to me he seems a bit more real than klavier. i'm not even sure how klavier really truly feels about his brother tbh...

oh and here's the original post i made about klavier:

Quote:
anyway as far as klavier-- i guess he is just a huge difference from the other prosecutors (edgey, franzy, papa vK, payne, godot) we faced because they were a bit antagonistic. I dunno klavier from the start was just like "hi there i'm klavier" not to mention he doesn't hold grudges or take loses personally...

when you think of it that does make him a really good guy. but it also makes him sort of an enigma...

what are klavier's motivations? why is he a prosecutor instead of a defense like his bro? why did he study in germany? what are his true feelings about his bro? of course we see he is troubled by the turnout of his bro and daryan being not quite who he thought they were but he also seems a bit incomplete in that regard.

even franziska and miles we know how they felt but klavier it's strange. like he feels it but then covers it with a smile. i suppose you can say then that he's a deep character because there's a lot under the surface... but to be honest it just looks like the writers didn't think that far. he seems incomplete.

Exactly. Even by the end of Justice for All Franziska was a character you can care for. You knew her background, her motivation for being a perfection-obbessed prosecutor, her reason for wanting revenge on Phoenix, and in the end we see she has a vulnerable side. She actully feels like a real human being.

Klavier, not so much.

I totally grabbed a red dry erase marker and drew the G on the mirror in my dorm.

I drew one on the dry erase board on my friend's door too, but her roommate erased it thinking it was a gang symbol

Guess I should throw my hat into the ring seeing as I'm a Klavier fan and don't stick up for him enough.

Let's see...Klavier is a more complex character than what you'd usually find in Ace Attorney. He's a gentle soul who cares more about doing what's right than seeking a particular conclusion. Whereas other prosecutors approach the bench with the mentality that "The defendant is guilty, the defense is fooling themselves", Klavier's stance is "I'm here to present the state's standing on the case, is there something wrong with what we found?"

If that means the defendant is guilty, so be it. But if they have the wrong person, he doesn't mind listening to why. He'll point out where the defense's logic falters or where the evidence is missing but if everything logically and soundly points away from the defendant, he'll step aside gracefully and accept the verdict that's handed down. In other words, he's not taking losses personally and acknowledges when the defense had a solid case.

He has values, which is usually something you don't see in most Ace Attorney characters (which is just a matter of black and white in their view of the world). He strikes me as one of the most intelligent characters in the series and one who has definitely had an epiphany somewhere in his life that gives him the legs to stand on morally (in the world of real law, this would be silly as a real prosecutor would have had Klavier's opinion of the law in mind from the beginning but in the world of Ace Attorney, this is a defining trait).

I've had a cool idea that would give Klavier the characterization the haters are longing for.
Spoiler:
Basically, it's an ordinary case, but the culprit's motive for the murder and subsequent frame-up would have most anyone forgive them. After they have their breakdown, they kinda say something like "I had to do it... Don't you understand? If I didn't..." Then we hear a huge BANG.

Pan over to Klavier, his right hand against a damaged wall, maybe bleeding. "I'm afraid... the law doesn't care." He really feels horrible for having a hand in exposing this "criminal", and is mad at the law. He learns that some truths should be left untold.

So, in a way, it's kinda like a reverse Edgeworth.

Honestly, I think that motivation really hurt his characterization because it's so generic and doesn't have a lot of depth in and of itself.

Klavier could have been way more interesting if, for instance, he really believed his brother was innocent and blamed Phoenix for somehow manipulating things behind the scenes to get Kristoph locked away under false charges, and looked down on Apollo as some unworthy puppet that Phoenix was using since Phoenix himself couldn't actually be a defense lawyer (which is actually pretty accurate except for the "false" part).

It works since even though you as the player suspect that isn't true, for all you know, Klavier could be right and Phoenix is using you, and that serves to make Phoenix's eventual vindication in Case 4 all the sweeter. In the meantime, it sets up some potential for conflict with Klavier while still keeping his motives pure compared to the previous prosecutors in the series. Day 2 of Case 4 would be a lot more challenging (and more impacting) if, instead of Klavier helping you so much in the fight against Kristoph, you have to go it alone against both an incredibly devious and creepily rational murderer and a prosecutor who desperately wants to believe in his brother's innocence. Doesn't that sound better and more human than a prosecutor focused so much on the truth that he has so little emotional reaction to discovering that his close friends and relatives are murderers?

It's cool to have a prosecutor who believes in the truth over personal victories, but if they don't have anything personal in the motivation, I think it's unsatisfying on a character-development level. Klavier's static; he didn't go anywhere in Apollo Justice because he doesn't have any room for growth, and if he comes back in AJ2, there's nothing he can do as a character besides be a generically nice prosecutor like he always has been, or be a victim of character derailment.

Klavier is also an unsatisfying opponent on a gameplay level because he hardly even fights back. Most of his prosecutorial skill set consists of "Well, maybe that series of improbable events happened... but maybe it didn't. I'm gonna need more proof, Herr Forehead." The idea I sketched out above would have kept the important parts of Klavier's half-personality intact, but it also would have given him better motivation to push Apollo to his limits and try to prove Apollo a fraud or a puppet. And that, hopefully would result in a more challenging opponent worthy of being your main rival. The way it was, it was closer to Ganondorf giving Link piggyback rides to the temples, helpfully pointing out the boss monster's weak points, and then holding the Master Sword steady at the end of the game so Link could push it into his head easier. [/hyperbole]

I don't really hate Klavier, because he had that cool air guitar gimmick, a handful of great lines, and in-general has the best animations/visual design of any prosecutor so far, but he definitely feels more like somebody wanted to try out a "good" prosecutor for once than actually being a fully fleshed-out character.

And with that wall of text done with, here's Franny doing the moonwalk.

Not so bad, just not what I'd call 'Edgeworth'. Edgeworth has shown himself to push witnesses to extreme levels of trauma (Adrian Andrews anyone?) so I wouldn't say the comparison is sound but I get ya. Though I don't think any prosecutor should let someone off on such sympathetic grounds since it provides such an impact of character as to how they handle it. Besides they can learn a good lesson from someone who everyone wants to be innocent being declared guilty.

I'm glad to see another person with the same sentiments about Phoenix using Apollo, or as he would like to put it, "pointing justice in the right direction". Equal parts endearing and foolhardy on Apollo's part, if he was naive enough to look past everything and not consider the fact.

Oh, but we were talking about Klavier, weren't we? :kyouya:

My two cents on the whole lack of characterization deal... For one, it certainly adds to the cool mysterious air around him. And from what I've seen in the game, Klavier always struck me as a very laid back and internal type of guy; someone who keeps his thoughts and motives to himself, is generally distant, and suffers from constant internal conflict. It works well with his rockstar persona, if you ask me. I'd imagine it's difficult to really open up and trust people given the celebrity status that he has.

Just because he doesn't lash out as much as other characters do that doesn't mean he doesn't have personality. It just means he's more subtle, more subdued. That's how I see it, anyhow. And the vagueness works out rather nicely for future installments of the game, if the GS team plans on pursuing him further; leaves a lot of room for character development.
