I think that's the case... Some normally good-looking characters look strange in their portrait sprites and this is especially noticeable in AAI. Just look at Rhoda!

They probably did go travelling a lot. Colias is totally the type to want to see every possible tourist attraction. you know, for research and stuff.
And I really liked your fic! That's more or less how I imagine their relationship must've been. No matter how bad a man Manny was, I doubt he could've avoided liking Colias, because no one can dislike Colias Palaeno.

At first, he came off as a creep with a weird, high-pitched, whispery voice that only lost its high pitch when he was serious about something. But then I wrote a short fic about him, and suddenly loved him.
Just the other day in my pokemon game, I named a Poliwag I caught Colias, entered the bug catching contest, won with a Butterfree, and named it Palaeno. Palaeno was on my team for a while, but has recently been replaced to live out his days in the box. Poor Palaeno.
