(I'm surprised that a thread like this hasn't been made, and if there is one, I'm surprised it's not sticky'd.)

Hello, everyone! Though I am pretty new to these forums, I have yet to see a thread solely for musical programs and resources. I believe that every forum that has at least a small section on visual, audio, or interactive media should have a place where members can gather musical information (yes, I'm trying to sound smart...)

Well, right now I only have a few categories, and not that much in them. Feel free to add more categories/sites/programs to this list... I would really like to see this grow and hopefully help someone who needs these.

Sibelius is a good music program, so is Anvil Studio.

SynthFont is a good music program. It also lets you use sound fonts, and you can get some here.

I use FL Studio for all of my AA remixes, and I got the Edirol Orchestra VST for orchestrations. But I cannot link to them, since I did not acquire neither of them legally. They are commercial-ware, after all.

Still, if pirating them doesn't bother you, you can always look for them.

Also, I read Reason is pretty good. Also commercial-ware, though, if I recall correctly.

Not to be of a bother, but when you guys recommend something, can you give a little info about it?

It's kinda hard doing it myself...

All I'll need is the price, the OS, and a small description. I'll add this to the first post as well.

You should add Reaper to the list of applications, it's a very good DAW (up there with Cubase, Logic and such) and it's really cheap. 60$ for a license (unless you use it for work), works on Windows and Mac and it does pretty much everything you could want from a DAW (doesn't come loaded with a bunch of synths and crap like FL, that's why the download is only ~5MB).

Also Freesound.org is a very good resource for sound effects.

I currently use MuseScore for my transposition/composition needs. It's a freeware, but works like Finale (I think). It's not professional (like if you want to have an entire bar of rest, sometimes it will split that up into rests representing the pulses in music, for example 4/4 time with a full bar of rest may sometimes appear as 4 quarter notes), and can be a little tricky at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty straightforward and easy to use! I would recommend it!

There is also another freeware called Lilypond, which specializes in more professional-looking sheet music. I've never used it, because I've never needed it, but I think it's worth checking out!

This is a specific resource so not sure where to categorize it:

I would suggest checking out the website called Soundcloud. It's essentially Youtube for everything music/sound effects related, that artists of all kinds go to show their work.

You can use the site for a bit of inspiration regarding a certain style of sound/direction that artists come up with in their productions for the world to see. Some artists will allow downloading their works (just be sure to check the license that goes with said piece you're downloading just to be clear what the dl'ed piece should be used for).

Because it hosts sound effects of all kinds as well, you can use it as well...another alternative sfx source.

The other thing I want to mention about Soundcloud, is since it's dedicated for people showing their work, it would be a nice alternative to HOST all of your works here, so you don't have to waste space on a storage solution like Dropbox. Not sure if Soundcloud allows hotlinking though.

And that's pretty much it I believe.

Sorry to bump this, but for those looking for "professional" music/composition software, you'll definitely want to take a look at Logic and Reason. Logic is Mac OS only (since it is Apple software, afterall), while Reason is available on both Windows and Mac. I'd compare FL Studio to these in terms of professionalism, but not in terms of ease of use. All of these DAWs are better at doing certain things that the others are. If you are easily confused, start with FL Studio. If you have a Mac, take advantage of Logic. If you work with music hardware (mixers, recorders, compressors, etc) with patch cables and signal flow and whatnot, you may really like Reason and how it is laid out.

P.S. I use FL Studio primarily, but I am familiar with Logic and Reason. I still prefer FL Studio over the other two because of how user friendly it is and how much the layout makes sense.
