TGS is starting, and with it comes our first real look at Professor Layton vs. Gyakuten Saiban in advance of Capcom's stage shows tomorrow and Friday.

The article mentions the new "Mob Judgment" system, in which Phoenix goes up against a crowd of witnesses. Witnesses may talk amongst themselves during a cross-examination. The article wonders if traditional Ace Attorney tactics and common sense will be any good here. At the moment, Layton's role is unclear.

I don't like it. Same way I don't like Mask of Miracle's 3D models, bringing Phoenix into the third dimension just seems... wrong. I would have much preferred high definition and detail sprites with fluid animation; 3D backgrounds would be fine.

Layton looks a bit blocky in the screen with him and Phoenix, and the scene looks a bit... plastic-like. There's no emotion, they're both deadpan; where are the over-exaggerated facial expression synonymous with Ace Attorney?

I know it's Level 5 and I can't expect them to hold completely true to Capcom's visual style, but even so...

I'm sure they still need to put the finishing touches on the graphics. The game is still a long way off from being completed, and these are the first "real" screenshots they've been able to release, so they'll probably polish everything up towards the end of development. :3

Hopefully. Ace Attorney is my favourite handheld game series, closely followed by Professor Layton, so I really do hope that this is done well and released over here. I suppose 3D models will allow there to be some more dynamic moments.

Remember the game will actually be in 3D, so it will probably be clearer when viewing them in that format :)

I am loving it! Now all we need is music samples :godot:

If there's one thing Level-5 are good at, it's making 3D models look convincingly like anime drawings. I think they'll look a lot better in motion than on a static screen.

So far, this game is looking absolutely beautiful! Day one purchase for me, if it ever gets here. (Glares in Capcom's direction..)

Translations of the screenshots (I think; someone with more skill in Japanese can correct me xD)

Maya: We did it, Nick!

Mahone: You're wrong! I'm not a witch...

Nick: (It's started. In this strange world... a <witch trial>!)

Layton+Nick: Objection!

Paasa(?): That... take it! (not really sure about this one ^^')

(no text)

Jiikan: The preparations for the "witch trial" have been completed.

In terms of graphics, I think everyone but Nick and Layton look pretty good. I wish Maya's hair was darker, too....

Yeah can't say I'm a fan of the graphics.

The Knight looks awesome and Maya looks fine but my god look at the dead emotionless expression on Phoenix as he objects.

Pfft I'm so excited for this.
While I am a big fan of 2D graphics for games of this style, I'm reserving judgement of the 3D graphics until I actually see them in action. Early concept screenshots probably aren't doing what they'll actually look like in motion during game play justice, and knowing what both teams have done with 3D in the past, I have some faith that it'll look nice.
But the plot just sounds so neat, and it's going to be great playing as non-Hobo Nick and Maya again. I love Polly and Edgey but I do miss them ;-;

I love Maya's expression in the artwork. She looks so... determined!
I also like the designs of the defendant and the new prosecutor. They look pretty cool. Why do I get the feeling that I'm going to end up shipping them...

I like the 3D models. They always look better in the actual console than in screenshots/scans, anyway.
Also, I hadn't realized how much I had missed Nick and Maya... it's good to see them again!

Oh wow, screenshots! The artwork looks fantastic as always, though I hope the 3D models turn out to be just as expressive as the sprites once we see them in motion. I wonder if we'll get the classic trial music from the first AA, It would be pretty neat if we got to hear all of them (JFA & T&T etc) as the trial sessions continue through out the whole game, original music would be great too.

FINALLY SOME NEWS ABOUT THIS THING.

This honestly has some really beautiful artwork. The styles of Layton and Ace Attorney don't clash at all. They fit so nicely here. I can't wait to see more.

When I saw this at school I literally about yelled "YES! YES! GOSHYESYESYESYESYESYES!"!
The 3D models definitely need working on but I'm sure they'll be fine.
... For some reason, Jiiken reminds me greatly of Klaiver. Both his expression and "pointing" just look like him.
The Mob Judgement will be... interesting. Poor Phoenix. XD
All in all, this game is looking pretty sweet~
I'm sure Level-5 will localize it here... so I'll definitely pick it up day one.

Graphics look amazing, I think people just have a slight case of nostalgia fever....

Either way I can assure that once the game comes out and people play it, the majority of the fanbase will like the new graphic style. (Think Wind Waker)

Layton's beady little eyes look so vacant and soulless as he stares off in to space.

So a knight prosecutor... First whips and now a sword? Don't worry, Nick. You got this.

True, but I doubt he'll be able to throw that sword around or Nick's injuries from court will be bloody..... I think he looks interesting though! :) I can't wait for the game already!

I can't wait to see some gameplay.

MY GOD

I was expecting semi-HD 2D sprites, BUT THIS IS GORGEOUS. Phoenix in that close-up, Witch Girl (Mahoney?), Knight Prosecutor Guy (Jiiken?), Maya! They look almost hand-drawn over 3D models. Without even mentioning that promo art, since comparing it to in-game material would be unfair.

It's all so beautiful... Except for Layton and Phoenix objecting, but that's clearly early promo art, since, come on, in what part of the game would they both pose in the middle of a courtroom and fancily object both ways? Besides, Phoenix's face in that screenshot is clearly cut and pasted from his T&T profile, evidenced by his blank stare. And Layton's model is taken straightly from PL5, I'm sure of it (the lighting on his clothes being different than on his tophat demonstrating that it's very roughly presented, therefore definitely not final).

Based on this, you guys should notice that all the 3D models that they're actually going to use look amazing. I can't wait to see Layton and Luke in there, and a moving scene! I'm hoping this is included in the TGS trailer. JESUS CHRIST I'M HYPED FOR THAT TRAILER, I need more music, more cutscenes, gameplay, a release window, I JUST NEED MORE OF THIS GAME.

Now that I mention Luke, he's young!Luke in the first trailer and older!Luke in this promo art... I guess the first trailer was just a really huge concept trailer, and the one we get this week is like the first REAL trailer, making it EVEN HARDER TO WAIT FOR.

People who don't think the 3D models will look good: Please watch videos of PL5. They work, and very beautifully so, both graphically and movement/animation-wise.

But basically, gameplay-wise, this is an Ace Attorney game! A new Ace Attorney game! By the way, according to 1UP the Famitsu interview mentions that there actually are Layton-style puzzle segments, but it still hasn't been announced how they blend into everything. My idea: Court phases are AA-style and Investigation phases are PL5-style, puzzles included. That would honestly blow my mind.

Also lol at knight!Klavier.

I would also like to start bets on who handles the music. PW:AA composer Masakazu Sugimori, historic AA composer Noriyuki Iwadare (T&T, AAI, AAI2, the Turnabout Orchestra concerts and the Turnabout Jazz Soul album), or lifetime PL composer Tomohito Nishiura? Or mabye Nishiura and one of the other two? OR MAYBE ALL THREE OF THEM!?

In order, my translation.

Maya: "Let's do it, Nick!"

Mahoney: "N-no! I'm not a witch..."

Phoenix: "(Now it begins. In this strange world... the Witch Trial!)"

Paasa: "Put that away!"

Jiiken: "As for the judgment of this "witch"... it's conclusive."

Since the game is on the 3DS, hopefully the 3D will be used meaningfully, as in not just a simple 3D :objection:. That is to say, I really hope there's at least 3D objections. :yuusaku:

My vote would absolutely go to Sugimori. His skill is beyond a doubt, as both GS1 and Ghost Trick demonstrated. I suppose it would make sense if Nishiura composed some too, though.
