It's pretty true that visual novels isn't as popular in the West, but hey, maybe that'll change one day!
More people are into action with explosions and all of that "cool stuff," and I rarely meet people who like games for its good story (I think the AA games have really good stories since well...having a good story helps make the visual novel sell well, right?!)

Looking at the image closer, this is more obvious. Notice how the people are semi-transparent.
