Yeah, if you can purchase digital releases from another region, it'll probably push me into picking up a Japanese 3DS, especially if third parties also are able to distribute their games this way. Day one GSvsPL/GS5 (assuming it's on the 3DS, of course) could actually happen for me.
(Well, more likely not, but a guy can dream.)

Come to think of it, an e-Shop releases seems the best course of action for a European release of VLR. Less risky, less expensive (they could just go with the English text, that'd be better than nothing).
Personally, I'm quite excited about full-games getting an e-Shop release. Let's just hope we get some interesting prices... but since Nintendo doesn't want retailers to just come and go all 'baaaawwww baaaaawwww baaaaaawwww' on them, retail titles will be, at best, as expensive than in 'brick and mortar' shops, if not more expensive *sigh*
Wish Nintendo would do like Steam, and have regular and rather aggressive sales. But that won't be happening...

Assuming 3DS games can be 2 Gigs, which is larger then Kid Icarus, but the same size as the standard issue SD card. Game downloads could take…
- 33 seconds at 480 Mbps
- 90 Minutes at 3 Mbps (US Average)
- 3 Hours at 1.4 Mbps (My current Cable connection, which actually ties with or slightly slower than my CDMA cellphone speeds =/)
- 4 Days at Dialup
Something to consider about Downloadable vs Physical. With downloadable, I can take the game wherever I have my 3DS. On the other hand, I can't share the game with other players. I do tend to trade games with a few friends after we're done playing with them. It becomes cheaper in the long run for us.

(But really, why should it be? If the game is already made and everything, it won't cost you anything to put it for download on your e-shop, Nintendo ~_~)
But I'm planning to buy a Japanese 3DS, so I'll get the Japanese e-shop, so I meant I could just download it from there instead of importing the cartridges. I hope it can download while in sleep mode... that'd make things a bit easier...
So now my concern is that my American credit card won't work for the Japanese 3ds ^^' If nothing else, hopefully I can just buy tons of Nintendo points cards online or something...
EDIT: Seems that you have to use credit cards from your region in the 3ds shop ~_~ Pre-paid cards it is...

And why it's region-locked? Various reasons Nintendo will proobably never tell us. Besides, all games published on the e-Shop are now rated by the PEGI (equivalent of the ESRB in Europe), and sometimes, the reason why some games arrives on the European e-Shop later is because the PEGI took longer to rate the game.
And yes, you can download e-Shop titles while in sleep mode. You get the option just before the download's started.
As for the e-Shop card, I believe you can't buy them online (they have to be activated at the store you buy them). Besides, they're also region-locked...

I haven't used my SD card since 2008 or something. If I can find it, it will probably show up rusty and unusable. Either way, 1 gigabyte is hardly useful.

Actually, there's only one demo for a Nintendo game on the e-Shop, and it's Nintendogs : /
I'm pretty sure third-party developers and publishers will have no trouble getting their retails games on the e-Shop. It's quite clear Nintendo's past the 'let's bother third-party devs. like hell with shitty restrictions', and is more willing to grant them a lot more freedom than in the past.
Of course, third-party will have to have a digital version of the game ready, though I doubt Nintendo will actually force them to release their games both digitally and at retail (at the same time).

'Sides. The Wii had a 512 meg internal storage. It launched in late 2006. In 2006, a 512 SD card would cost $20. Today, you can get an 8 gig SD card for the same cost at launch for the Wii's internal memory (if it were an SD card. It isn't. The costs are different but the prices should scale similarly).
Admittedly, 8 gigs isn't a lot when you consider Brawl was close to 2 gigs. Perhaps Nintendo has a cloud solution? That would be a very comfortable medium. Though, 2 gigs is a lot to download on not-so-fast connections.

I don't think Nintendo can possibly launch its console without some sort of internal storage, that'd be suicidie, even more so than they're fully embracing digital downloads. It's almost guaranteed there'll be several e-Shop title ready at launch, even GameCube Virtual Console titles (hopefully!), so without internal storage, Nintendo will do us another DsiWare...
I believe they might bundle the console with a 32Gb SD Card, or 16Gb at the very least. That, or some internal storage.

What do you mean by 'Cloud Solution'? The e-Shop's already a service on the Cloud (I believe Acer's the one providing it).
Don't you mean 'Streaming'? Like Onlive? Where you don't physically have the game on the console, you're streaming it from some Cloud?
If yes, I highly doubt that. That kind of service won't be sustainable till fibre has replaced xDSL technology as the standard type of connection (which isn't the case anywhere in the world, except Japan and S.Korea).
By the way, I wonder if we'll be able to install the retail games on our internal storage (like on Xbox 360). Greatly reduces loading times.

Of the two, I'd say Brawl was the least favorite of mine. By the time I got home, all I could think about was sleep.
Where as, staying at Best Buy, because there was no reservation system I had to camp out with my brother when the shop closed at 10:00pm. The wait was a lot longer and I got to chat with the other campers. One lady in particular wasn't a gamer at all, but was staying overnight in the cold for a surprise Christmas present for her fiancé. Another was one of those jerks who camps out and then resells on eBay, but he told funny stories about his fellow campers who were camping out days in advance, were jerks to everyone, and all in all made life miserable for the other customers. ... But when it came time to buy the systems the clerks admired that there was only a handful in stock. But rather then turn everyone away, this guy offered to buy everyone coffee and Dounuts. Naturally, a lot of people left anyways, but the jerks accepted as did some fellow line waiters. He just neglected to mention he added laxatives to the jerks' drinks. Skipping ahead, the jerks left the line and didn't get their systems.
Granted, your mileage will vary, but I still feel like midnight launches are nothing special.

I agree midnight releases aren't really that special, but I just have a tendency to want to purchase and play a game I've been anxiously waiting for the second it's released.

Y'see to me that final statement sounds contradictory. The camping, the camaraderie of people gathered together for one purpose, sharing jokes and stories, the generosity and cunning of the clerks to ensure those who truly wanted it got what they deserved around Christmas time.
All does sound pretty special and cool to me.

With Brawl the time was too short to get to know your fellow line waiters. Hence I've got no affiliation for midnight releases. But I will if I feel I need to. (With Brawl there was guaranteed to be shortages while there wasn't much incentive to stay up til Midnight, not being able to have the game for a week plus seemed like there wasn't much choice)

Plus, I remember when I reserved it, I didn't have to get it at midnight - I just chose too. You could just as easily reserve it and get it that morning or afternoon instead.
