So, I've been playing (read: watching translated playthroughs of) AAI2 and I've been giving the characters English names as I run into them. I'm curious if there are canonically agreed upon English names for them? Anyway, this is what I currently have.

Manosuke Naito: Horace Ellis. Horace from horse, obviously, and Ellis as in Ls-- like, the shape the knight makes in a game of chess.
Gai Tojiro: Guy Brooks. "Guy" is straight-up from his Japanese name, and "Brooks" has the word "rook" hidden in it.
Teikun Ou: Teikun Ou. No need for translation here.
Mikiko Hayami: Keanne Lissner. Like her Japanese name-- she's a keen listener.

Ryouken Hoinbo: Cain Maddox. Cain like a canine (and also that whole Biblical shindig), Maddox for sounding like "mad dogs." It's an imposing name in general I do think.
Hakari Miyagami: Prudence Cahill. Prudence because she's a reasonable judge type, and when you blend the S sound at the end with her last name you get "scale" (like her Japanese name.)
Tateyuki Shigaraki: Barry Milliner. Barry as in a barrier, like a shield (like the Japanese name), and milliner like a hatmaker (due to his rockin' fedora). Plus he just SEEMS like a Barry, you dig?
Souta Sarushito: Rhys Goodall. Rhys (rhymes with geese) like the rhesus monkey, and Goodall as in the Jane the chimp hugger. (Not to mention his adorable, 100% good-natured behavior!!)

I especially like Guy Brooks. Puns are well translated!

Btw, Teikun should be changed into chinese pronunciation, like Shiryuu Rou -> Shi long Lang.

Maybe his name will be Di jun Wang I guess..

I agree with most of the fan translation names with a few exceptions or minor changes.

Hakari Mikagami - Sophia Cross
Yutaka Kazami - Flavio Gustavia
Souta Sarushiro - Solomon Keyes

I also rather like the name dowolf gave Shimon, Marcus Ward.

How about this? Souta Sarushiro - Ivan Monkton

Monkton comes from monkey, and Ivan is based in the protagonist of the storybook 'Ivan the Fool'. Souta's naive character somewhat resembles Ivan. And
Spoiler: Major spoilers
Evil Monk. Ryouken reffers him as 'little monk' in 2-5.

Since the game's title isn't Gyakuten Kenji but Ace Attorney Investigations, and the background isn't Japan, but US, who cares about nationality? Also,
Spoiler: major part of his identity
His father, Kazami, is also considered as Russian in fan translation.

Spoiler:
But, his current name is not that given him originally by his father I think... :yogi:

Spoiler:
Indeed, his family name, 'Sarushiro' isn't given by his father. But 'Souta' part, we can't easily say like that. It can be applied also Ivan Monkton.

It's okay if Ivan is not his 'given' name. Just think like this. He could remember his early life a little, and remembered the Russian nuance which his father had talked with, and named himself a Russian name; It makes sense either.

The only one I really didn't like was Justine Courtney. I thought a name like Prudence would be much more appropriate for some reason.

I think Sebastian Debeste is my favorite choice; it fits his character well.
Mr. Edgeworth, do you realize if we played by the rules, we'd be in court right now?

For Simon Keyes in the official Fan Translation, I felt that his first name shouldn't have been Simon. And for only one reason: when I say "Simon", I'm usually talking about Blackquill. But other people think I mean Keyes, and it's infuriating. I've actually gotten to where I will say "Blackquill" and "Sarushiro" instead.

I think most of the names sounds quite fitting. I think Sebastian Debeste is a great name for the lil' guy. I always use the Japanese names when talking about these particular characters (mostly since it isn't an official translation), but Sebastian Debeste... Well, that really suits him, even though I still call him Yumihiko. I'm also fond of Raymond Shields.
Gimme a "P"! Gimme an "I"! Give me a "P" and an "E"! What's that spell?! Pipe!
