With the recent release of the Case 1 and 2 Fan Patch, many western fans will be playing this for the first time. This thread is for discussion of all things related to AAI2 case one. Spoiler tags don't need to be used in this thread when discussing the basics of case one. They should be used when discussing earlier cases or later cases, or the later parts of case one.

That's *ahem* "Mr. Knightley" to you!

So far, I like it. The dialogue is way sharper than it was in any GK1 case (thank you fan-translators. You're amazing!)

As for the story... I like it so far but I'm guessing case 1 is your typical setup where Miles isn't really as emotionally involved as he is engaged because of his prosecutor pride. It's gonna be interesting to see what cliffhanger I'm gonna get off at by the end of Case 2.

I did feel like De Killer's takeoff was a bit too sudden and I immediately thought "This is the end of my cameo, bye!". It was pretty cheap and it doesn't make sense to his own motive, but I guess it would've been too lame if he'd just been standing around casually and waiting for the president to be lured out.

I hope the rest of the game is less "National" in theme because that was the thing i disliked the most about AAI, but I'm thinking this is just to give closure to whatever happened at the end of AAI, same goes for Kay who I hope vanishes after case 1.

Anyway, Judging by character sprites I thought I would've hated Nicole Swift because she seemed like a ripoff of Lotta Hart but I actually really like her. Her gimmick is win and I love it when she tries to interview people. her accent is also awesome.

To be honest... she refers to a mysterious "first mentor" and has a southern accent - I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that she and Lotta Hart are acquainted. Could be wrong, of course.

At a certain point she says "Ms. Hart" and Edgeworth remarks about it.

I liked the case, it didn't feel like the introductory case at all and was way better than AAI-1 even though we didn't have any medal eating. The only thing which bugs me was how stupid everyone was sometimes, especially when it came to Edgeworth's logic. I mean, do you really have to see a laser pointer to figure out what the red dot on the president's forehead is?
The second half was harder and better. The only thing I didn't like was how De Killer suddenly vanished but he seems to have his reasons.

Lies. Ice cream salesman assassin is a way better design. De Killer was the best part of this case. There, I said it.

Anyway I beat the case. It was quite good but nothing extraordinary. Nice with a Ace Attorney bonus while we wait for AA5. I just started case 2 "The Imprisoned Turnabout" and
Spoiler: "SHOCK AND AWE"
Knightley is the victim!
I love cases in AAI where you see parts of the legal system that the usual POV perspective could've never revealed.

So far this feels awfully much like AAI and that's a bad sign. It's by the same team so that's obvious. I do hope AA5 is a significant improvement over this game though :/

I don't know if it's because I'm watching a subtitled walkthrough on the internet, but so far Gyakuten Kenji 2 is almost as mediocre as Ace Attorney Investigations. I don't care for the copious amounts of cameos, but including De Killer was a good choice, and they managed to make the man look threatening in pink. I respect that.

I agree. I'm halfway into case 2 and overall, to put it into a comparison I believe most can follow, I feel like the main GS games 1-4 were Disney's Aladdin in quality and the GK games are the Aladdin and The King of Thieves in terms of the overall quality, from music, spritework to story/writing.

It's just a pretty big step down from Shu's games and one major reason is the cheap cameos, another big one is the writing which isn't as clever (even though the fan-translation is good) and the third is the artwork for the new characters. It just spells out B-L-A-N-D.

I'm jus' gonna come out and say it - having had the soundtrack for a while...

It's lacking - I mean it works and it does the job, but...meh - It's nowhere near AAI1's or the number titles in feel.

What's with everyone here? If there was any problem here, it would be the fact that this isn't a very good first case. It's a very good second case, but a not a good first case. It's too complicated to be the first case in the game, and too long. But, other than that, WHAT IS WRONG WITH EVERYONE HERE? This game is great! I loved AAI and this is also really good. I don't understand why the Investigation games get so much hate.

Because they fail to fully live up to the series standards. I know we should treat it different since it's a spin-off but in general the writing isn't exactly as sharp or humorous.

And I'm a little anxious the new writer is gonna seriously derail the franchise since all this is canon, and as with GS5 it seems he's more interested in making up his own plots, that first of all don't feel like something typical for Ace Attorney (too large in scope and too focused on unappealing elements like foreign nations and smuggling) and... it's just kinda boring imo.

Luckily it seems GK2 picks up after AAI and then it drops the Zheng-Fa bullcrap later to focus on something much more interesting and recognizable in an Ace Attorney game... but I'm still not convinced that the latest 3 Ace Attorneys are gonna be as good as the first three or even Apollo Justice for that matter.

Don't get me wrong, I actually liked AAI the first time I played it, but looking back at it I think it's very unoriginal, bland and kind of a bummer in comparison to how big of an impression the other games has given me. The GK games just feel slower paced to me... dunno, they just lack a certain something.

Well, I think part of it is the fact that Edgey is the protagonist, and he's basically been fleshed out as much as he can--hence, the villains have to be more "impersonally" evil, like a smuggling ring.

Part of it can also just be the lack of a defendant. In GS, when you lose, an innocent person goes to jail. In GK, when you lose... well, a killer goes free which isn't good, but it's not like it has a negative impact on you.

It's definitely less tense than the ever-present danger in GS

...Which is to say, the GK games aren't as emotionally invested as the GS ones. It's difficult to work with only crime drama after a combination of it and court drama have long proven more successful than either one alone. The GK games don't necessarily lack in any one specific aspect (that is applicable for comparative rating). They mainly suffer from being in the shadow of the main series line. I don't doubt that GK3 will still be successful with Japanese sales, but I do doubt that it could match the sales potential of GS5. That game alone sold more in its first week out of any other one game in the franchise. It'd be tough to top that; even GS6 could see a slight decrease when it's finally released. The tension built up after 5 long years away from the main series isn't comparable to that of perhaps another 2-3 years for GS6.

But I digress. The GK games will need to be superb to keep up, or they'll quickly drop out of the running.

But he would be a rather fascinating adversary to handcuff. Not that it matters in the end; Edgeworth would just go after De Killer's client instead. Then the 1st case would have enough material to become the length of a 2nd case.

First off, the fan translators did a fantastic job. Best fan translation I've ever seen. I started playing this game leading up to DD, so I honestly wasn't very excited about it since it's been so long since I really thought I'd be able to play it. About 5 minutes in, it clicked that "This is a new Ace Attorney game! It's the return of Edeworth, Kay, and Gumshoe!" and since then I've had such a wonderful time playing it that I've allowed DD to temporarily go to the back of my mind at the moment.

I thought it was a great first case. I tend to often feel cheated with the first cases (specifically in PW:AA, JFA, and kind of in T&T). I think the premise is great, the kind of thing that you'd put in the trailer if it was a movie. It really gets the excitement and tension going right away. It isn't the best intro case; that's still AJ but this takes second place.

I really don't see that big of a difference in quality when you compare GK to GS. Yeah, GS1 (and in my opinion AJ) was better than GK and what I've seen from GK2 but T&T is about equal with it and JFA is inferior to the GK games in my opinion. Character-wise, the characters are a little more exaggerated, likely due to the gameplay changes, but I prefer most of them to most of the characters in JFA and T&T.

That's just my opinion, though. Overall, I was very impressed with Case 1 and think it's going to be a very enjoyable game. I'm savoring the two fan translated cases since after that I'm going to be using a combination of youtube translations and my Japanese copy of GK2, which will be much more complicated to totally get into.
I used to have Sam Waterston as my avatar but photobucket added a watermark and also Law & Order has been cancelled for 10 years so it's time for me to move on.

The first case i thought was pretty good , the whole thing of the assastion attempt being fake was cool and how Rooke was the intented victim all along , I am curious to see who hired Dekiller and why, Also having the ice cream do all of Dekillers emtions was very funny. In terms of the music currently I don't think the objection and confess the truth are quite as good , But overall first case was very good :)

I thought this served pretty well as an introduction to the rest of the game, both story- and gameplay-wise. As a standalone case, it also manages to hold its own. I like how the president talks about taking down the smuggling ring, it connects it to AAI without depending on it.

The build-up felt a bit shattered. First we have the attempted assasination, out-chessing a journalist, Kay pops up from nowhere, extraterritorial rights are claimed and suddenly someone else entirely is dead. It's not a bad thing in itself but the way it was executed made the case feel hacked up. Even so, it was nice to have different things to do, although in hindsight I feel like I hardly did a thing. The case felt fairly long for an introduction case.

I liked Mikiko and Naitou. It's refreshing to have a character like Naitou who has a "thing", the chess that is, with his air-chess-playing-sprite and such, but without going overboard with it and making his entire character about that. Also, the irony in Edgeworth telling him "but this is not a chess board" when he himself spends the entire game playing make-believe two-piece chess with unaware opponents. The president was really annoying but as a character I kinda liked what he served.

I freakin' hate that they brought DeKiller back. I loathe this guy. He just says the same things over and over ("I've been observing your investigation the whole time", "I am merely a simple ice cream salesman", shut up) and has the nerve to stand there running his stupid assasin mouth and his damn calling card logo all over his jacket, it's disgusting that he wipes his blood off with the same napkin he's wrapped around the ice cream cone and for some damn reason his stupidity is so infectious everyone around him turn into even bigger knobheads than he is, and that's saying a lot. "Don't push that lever, it's for the trap door under my feet", if you know there's a trapdoor, why the frick are you standing on it?! I just wished they could have grabbed Naitou, opened the trapdoor and flown away. And his stupid ass turns the lights off and everyone is just "oh no, it's dark! oh no, where did DeKiller go?!". Bitch, you're in a cramped, closed space and you're hearing him speaking, there's not a lot of places where he could be. Good riddance anyway, I wish he would have stayed on the other side of the lake forever.

One thing that bugged me in this case, and time will tell if it goes for the other cases of the game as well, was that there were a lot of instances where I felt the questions were oddly or vaguely phrased so I ended up losing a lot of points for misunderstanding what the game was asking from me, although I don't know whether the fault was the game's, the translation's, or my own.
(......Ack! I've run out of snide comments!)

^I agree. The difficulty really jumped. The first thing you have to prove is common sense (the red thing on the president ISN'T a mole?!) and soon after that you have to show Mikiko/Nicole's involvement to the case through something subtle. It felt...odd.
