Matt stood, mouth agape after Monokuma's announcement. "Wa.. Wai.. Wait-- so.. somebody.. dies now..?" He struggled to get the words out of his mouth. "Why.. why would someone.."

"No... No!!" Sayako shrieked, tears welling in her eyes as her heart hit the floor. The fact that she was going to be spared was no consolation when she knew someone else who didn't deserve it was about to die. They still had time to figure out the true culprit, but... did it even matter at this point?

At Monokuma's declaration, Subaru burst into maniacal laughter. "You didn't just- You actually believed our fake confession eventhough we said we were clearly lying?!" At this point he almost fell on the ground.

After steading his breath, he continued. "But that doesn't matter anymore, the cycle of death is complete, and the spirits should be rejoicing right now. Our body is shivering at the thought of meeting the murderer..." Subaru said as he drooled a little.

"You fucking killed someone.. and you're laughing..? Who do you think you are..?" Matt was on the verge of crying at this moment.

"We... we failed?" Alchie asked, voice trembling. "No... Subaru, how can you laugh at a time like this?" She shook her head, unable to stop the tears from pooling in her eyes. They were supposed to bring justice to Karega- hell, this whole summer school was suposed to be a fun carefree time. But now...

Sadness was replaced in a quick moment by anger, and she straightened up. "Even if it won't change the end, we have to find the killer."

Jay was kicking himself inside. "I-I should h-have told you all to wait... I was never planning to vote for Subaru. M-my friends and I were burned hard by a f-fake confession once before, but that's a story for another t-time." Jay was reeling, holding himself up against the podium.

Crimson punches her podium and cries out, finally unleashing her pent up anger. "To hell with this bullshit!"

She turns to Monokuma, a raging look in her eyes. "Just tell us who the real culprit is, no one's got time for your shit anymore!"

She then addresses Subaru, barely able to contain her anger.

"And you...just fuck off already! What was the point in screwing with us like this?!"

"I...I didn't think it was Subaru, but I didn't really have any proof one way or the other," SiRReN said. Tears gathered in her eyes and she hugged herself tightly. "But why mislead us," she whimpered. "Why screw with us like that. Subaru, I hope you live with the consequences of your actions for a very long time," she said.

Cesar froze after hearing the announcement, his face being one of shock he hadn't displayed in the whole game. He turned to Subaru. "You...are aware that even if you don't get executed, your chances of surviving this are now pretty much zero, right?" He looked away from him. "Just...get on with the execution already."

(If you have any problems with the trial, you can tell me on the discord. Adjustments will be made trial to trial)

Spoiler: Climax Reasoning
Solomon put his hand to his head. "Here's everything that happened in this case!"

"Early in the day, Karega became scared of dying. She decided to kill someone, so she talked to Monokuma and requested the ultimate answer to the ultimate question. However, there was one other person who did so--the killer.

"Karega planned on making a time-delayed trap to kill someone, and not only that, she wanted an alibi. Perhaps she talked to Monokuma to find out exactly how much time it would take the step to break she left a certain person on it. They were going to fall, and get electrocuted below. While she established an alibi, explaining why she walked into the gym to ask the time.

"That same day, Slezak came upon the note in Alchie's door. He read it, and decided to go to the meeting out of curiosity. But upon showing up, he ran into Karega in the middle of her plan. She chased him out and knocked him unconscious. Maybe she was planning to put him in the stair trap, but she wouldn't get that chance. Because that's where she ran into the killer.

"The killer had his own plan, and covered himself in black paint. He did this carefully, and made sure to paint his skin and not the bottoms of his feet. He had planned to go down to the fusebox, turn the power off, and kill someone. Then he'd just shower and get it off. However, Karega's plan threw a wrench in that by knocking out the water. Encountering Karega was not good for either of their plans, but she ended up getting the better of him in a fight and knocked him unconscious.

"She placed him on the steps, then placed Slezak in the kiln. She couldn't kill Slezak now because of the two person rule, and she was planning to set him up as a suspect. She decided to wait at the classroom before entering the gym, where plenty of witnesses were. She walked by Charlie and Matt at this time.

"The killer eventually woke up, and his panicking movement broke the step. The killer just barely managed to grab onto the step above him, and left some black paint behind. The paint from the step he was on was washed off into the cold water below. The dumbbell either fell on the fusebox by coincidence and it worked with the killer’s plan, or he managed to break it himself anyway.

"The killer ran to the classroom, past Charlie and Matt without them noticing. He then went into the classroom, where Karega was. He locked the door behind him and they got into a struggle, where the killer managed to eventually grab the knife and stab Karega through the heart.

"The killer had plenty of time to wait now for a body discovery. But first, he covered the body in red paint. This was for two reasons: to hide the black paint that got onto her in the struggle, and to hide the smell of himself from Charlie when he stayed at the crime scene during the investigation. Karega brought the red paint for reasons that we can only speculate. Perhaps she wanted to feign a vicious attack from Slezak to give herself more credibility as an innocent.

"Eventually, the killer removed the key, allowing the body to be found. Van, SiRReN, and Subaru came in, and the killer ran out, taking the can of red paint with him. He blent in perfectly, and was only smelt by Charlie as he got into the hall.

"He couldn't use the showers because of Karega, so he headed to the art room. He had every color in the world available to him, so he painted himself his own skin tone and threw his clothes back on, rejoining the others at the crime scene. This also worked well in covering up his bruises. This would be impossible for any student, but it wasn't for this killer...

"It was I, Solomon Cox the Ultimate Painter!"

Spoiler: Post Trial
“Looks like you guys were…WRONG! The blackened is not Subaru Musashi, but Solomon Cox!”

“S-Solomon?” Arthur nearly choked. The class turned to the man in question.

“Y-You killed Shinda-san?” Amachi was nearly in tears. “W-Why? Why would you listen to that bear? Was it self-defense?”

“No, I planned to kill Karega from the beginning.” Solomon put bluntly.

“Why the hell would you do that?!” Cesar lost his composure. “We all agreed...we all agreed we wouldn’t participate.”

“Because it would be fun. There is no other reason.”

“Fun? What’s wrong with you?” Van asked. Perhaps it was that Solomon suddenly...changed, but the air in the room got much colder. “This-This is...exactly what Slezak said happened to Karega.”

“Right.” Solomon smiled. “I was debating on whether or not to kill someone, I’m sure you guys were too. I wanted to see my sister, my family, my friends...nothing wrong with active thoughts, right? But I began to notice something peculiar. No matter what I thought for a murder plan, I knew I was going to kill Karega. It was like I didn’t have a choice.”

“You’re not making any sense…” Matt sighed.

“What, didn’t you guys entertain any murder scenarios in your head? Let me guess, the victim was Karega in all of them, right?”

The class just stared in response.

“Well, I wasn’t going to kill on an empty promise. So I asked Monokuma for the ultimate answer: the ‘meaning of life’. So he told me, and that’s when I knew I had to kill Karega.”

“Stop speaking in riddles.” Crimson glared. “What’s the ‘meaning of life’? How could anything Monokuma have said made you want to kill two people?”

“The meaning of life? There is no meaning.” Solomon smiled. ”We’re all just fictional characters in a forum game.”

“W-What? Fictional?!” SiRReN screamed.

“Stop fucking with us!” Flo screamed. “T-That’s not true...there’s no way it’s true…”

“I-I think I’m going to be sick…” Ryuji turned a shade of green.

“Wait a second!” Slezak yelled. “I remember! My conversation with Karega!”

“Now’s not the time, Slezak!” Alchie pleaded. “We already lost the trial.”

“He’s not lying, though. It’s...it’s the same thing she told me.”

1:30 AM

“Eh? What’s the meaning of life?”

“Hmph. We’re all just characters in a forum game. Not only that, but I’m selected to die first. Just for a joke.”

“W-What? And you believe that?”

“Of course I do. What other reason do we have for this killing game happening? For all of that’s happened so far...it just doesn’t fit. If I’m to be in a game, it’s more fun to kill people than be the victim.”

“Karega, stop it.” Slezak pleaded. “I get it...I get that you’re scared. We all are, but you can’t be acting so deluded.”

Karega looked downwards, no guilt apparent on her face. “It’s not that I’m killing someone just because we’re in a forum game. Rather, it’s because we’re in a forum game that I have to kill someone.”

“What do you mean?”

“When I was a little girl, I got lost hiking in the woods with my parents. I had no food, no shelter...it wouldn’t stop raining all those days...by the time the doctors found me they said there was no way I’d survive. That my parents shouldn’t hold the hope for it. But here I am. From that day on, I made a promise to myself that I would never let go of the life that was given to me.” Karega clutched her arm. “My life might be fictional, but it’s real to me. My parents are real, my dreams are, and my life is. And if some force I can’t control is saying I have to die first, then I’m not going to lie down and let it happen. If all I need to do is murder someone to stay alive, then that’s how far I’ll go.”

“W-What?” Sakura’s eyes were blank. “S-She was just trying to save her own life? S-She would’ve died no matter what?”

“Yup!” Monokuma yells. “Had I not gotten any eager beavers for killing, then I would’ve just had her kill herself! The most important thing is for the killing game to start, after that it all snowballs.

“That’s just...too cruel.” Alchie held her chest close.

“Now then, I’ve prepared a very special punishment for our Ultimate Paranormal Investigator!”

Subaru stood calm. The classmates seemed concerned, frightened, and angry with him. “It is alright.” Subaru told them. “We...perhaps deserve this. But do not weep for us, for we do not fear death. In fact, I welcome the chance to join my lovely cohorts.”

“Subaru…” Ryuji had no life left in him.

“All of you, remember us-no, me! Subaru Musashi!”

“Can I go now, Monokuma?” Solomon asks.

“Nope! You have to see this through until the end. Let’s go, it’s PUNISHMENT TIME!”

Spoiler: The Last Exorcism
Subaru stands still, surrounded on all sides by frightened, angry, and sad faces. A large chain appears out of nowhere and wraps around his neck, pulling him out of the room and into another.

He ends up in the middle of a vast desert, chains wrapping him tight on a large cross in a crucifixion pose.

Monokuma chants, and a large elaborate symbol draws itself on the ground. Latin enscribes itself along the edges and soon, a large, holy, white light engulfs Subaru. His skin burns off, his eyes go white, and he lets out a horrifying, but almost excited scream as his flesh burns away and and his bones turn into dust, spreading through the desert.

Subaru’s spirit leaves his body, and heads towards his friends. He looks down at the class first, but then heads upwards, arms outreached…

Monokuma jumps up, and pours salt all over Subaru’s spirit. In seconds, the spirit has dissipated and nothing remains of their former classmate.

Spoiler: Post-Execution
“N-No.” Crimson had cried the entire way through. They all had. None of them had ever come close to seeing something so...horrible.

“C-Can I go now?” Solomon said, sounding almost bored.

“Yeah, the exit is down the hall and to the left. Don’t bother bringing police and all that.”

“Solomon! Get back here!” Arthur yelled. “You can’t be ok with this!”

“Why would I feel bad? It’s just a game. The ones who kill other people are the ones who create all the excitement.” That was what Solomon said but, his eyes told another story. One look into them, and the regret was clear. He believed in his own life just like everyone else. His talent, his sister, his friends...telling himself none of it was real was the only way he could’ve done the murder at all.

"T-This isn't a game...it can't be..." everyone muttered.

Solomon walked down the corridor and never returned.

"I-I-I can't believe it," SiRReN stuttered, shaken to the core. She looked broken. "Solomon...he was so strange, so distrustful, but to murder Karega...?"

"What does it mean that we're forum characters?" she asked to the air. "That we're not real? That can't be. The cosplay I make, I can touch them. I put them on. I feel them on my skin. My feelings for all of you," SiRReN continued, looking at her equally shell-shocked classmates. "It's all real."

"No, I don't believe it," she said firmly, eyes bright with anger. "I refuse to believe that we're not real. That I'M not real."

"No… Cox… fucking COX!" Flo slammed her fist down.

"He played the fool when really, he was playing us for fools. And here I was opening my smug little mouth claiming Subaru did it. Oh… he will pay."

"I promise you," she faced Monokuma. "No more murders, we will make it out alive. We will get back at Cox for what he did. And most importantly…"

Flo narrowed her eyes.

"We will punish YOU for setting this all up. For Karega, even for Subaru. I don't care if you say we're just part of a forum game. Cox can not go unpunished. We will find him, and put him in his place."

Alchie focused her eyes on the ground, finding herself unable to speak for the first few moments. The shock in her system gave her an odd sort of calm, though she knew as soon as the events had settled in - as she accepted them to be true - that calm would shatter like glass. "Guess... that was the end," she muttered, voice void of emotion. "We're just forum characters, huh? Even so, that doesn't mean our life has no meaning. That it has no value."

"The next part of the killing game..." she trailed off, raising her head almost jerkily to look at the others. "We'll survive, and we'll see the end of this. Because we are living in this moment and now, and our only choice is to continue forward."

Sakura had watched Subaru's fate in its entirety, but after that she looked back down at the ground again, not seeing anyone else. She was still slumped on the floor, but now her shoulders began to heave as she cried in earnest.

"T... that's the thing, Ryuji," Jay commented. It was clear this had left an impression on him, but a nagging feeling in the back of his mind had already come to the conclusion.

"This really isn't real, per se... There's a real element, and a fictional element, you see..." Jay was holding his chin, trying to find the words.

"It's fine. The real element will go on and continue to live their life just like usual, before this happened. I... well, how do I put this? 'I' feel sad for Subaru, even though he messed with everything."

But I... I know.

SiRReN fled her podium and joined Sakura, falling to her knees beside the other girl. "It's going to be okay," she murmured. "It's going to be okay." She repeated it like a mantra, for Sakura and for her.

Ryuji saw the faces of his downcast classmates.

"H-Hey, it'll be alright guys!" Ryuji said, suddenly. "L-Look, now that Solomon is gone, and Subaru is too, t-there's no reason for anyone to die anymore! N-No one has to kill anymore. It'll be alright!"

Ryuji forced a smile that glowed with his greatest sense of fallacy. Yet it was a smile put on with the greatest effort he could, courtesy of his title of the Ultimate Actor.

"T-things can only go up from here," Ryuji pointed out. "No one is going to die anymore! Ryuji Arisato, the Ultimate Actor, promises!"

The shock of seeing what happened finally broke, and whatever was supporting Jay faltered. He slumped to the ground, beginning to sob as well. Yes, Subaru had messed with things. But... he was still a person. Real or fake, it didn't matter. Someone, somewhere, had given him life. And for that to be forcefully taken away... was too much.

"I... I'm forever changed... I believe this is what you call... character development..."

After hearing Alchie's little speech you'd expect Matt to agree. But no, it made him realize how bullshit that claim was.

"That claim does not compute!" He proudly shouted.

"That claim was the motive for murder, not an exclamation! We can't be characters in a forum game - do you really believe that?!" He curled his fist in a ball and held it on his chest.

"You were the same person that gave us hope before the murder! Do it again!"

Ryuji's nose flared up. Something Alchie said struck a nerve with him.

"L-Life has meaning no matter what form we take," Ryuji said, with frustration. "N-Nothing ridiculous like being "forum characters" can be true, but even if it was, l-living in the moment like you said is the r-reason why anyone lives anyway! T-This is what my career taught me! So get a grip! Y-You're supposed to be the one who motivates everyone...as much as I-I'd like to, I'm not capable enough for that! I-I'm not confident enough for that, so buck up!"

Ryuji then flashed his classmates with pleading eyes.

"O-Or anyone," Ryuji pleaded. "S-She's not supposed to be hopeful all by herself anyways! A-and it can't be me, s-so if we start to believe that s-someone else might kill us, then we'll spend the rest of our lives in fear, s-so...y'know...we can't act that way...we just can't!"

Ryuji's speech ended with the thought that no one was paying attention anyways.

"That we are forum characters, or that we have to keep going? I'm pretty sure the former was a way for Monokuma to justify killing each other, but we have no choice. We can either believe or not, and no matter what we do, it's not going to change anything. Even if we are, if we aren't, it doesn't mean anything because we have reason in life."

"If you're talking about the latter, Monokuma is using us as pawns in whatever sick entertainment he wants. Pawns can never turn back - only keep going forward until promotion. And we have to do the same."

"Or perhaps you mean my optimism that we'll live?" Alchie sighed, looking tired. "I don't know what's going to happen but we at least have to try. We owe that much to the people we love..." She broke into sobs, facade broken, as she clung onto the podium for support.

Hearing Matt's words, Alchie paused for a second, raising her head. Despite the tears that occasionally broke her sentences, she continued-

"Listen, Matt. Even if we are forum characters, does that really change anything? I didn't say that because I believe what Monokuma is feeding us, but because in the end, it doesn't matter! We have a life - maybe that doesn't matter to whoever controls us, but it does to us. And that's what should matter. Isn't the concept of religion that somebody created the world we live in? And yet, those who believe in religion continue on with their lives, even if they were made by others for purposes. We have to do the same...

"I hope that helps... I'm trying, but there's only so much I can do..."

[I hope the addition of religion isn't rude.]

Cesar tried to keep his composure after what he had seem and heard. He took a deep breath before speaking. "A forum game? Of course no one here believes that...that's as ridiculous as saying we're in a virtual reality or something. Solomon and Karega just tried to excuse their actions by getting detached from reality...everything here has a perfectly logical explanation. And now...we will definitely not kill one another anymore." He clenches his fist. "Even if that bear thing thinks he's a god, he and anyone helping him won't be escaping the law once I get out of here. I swear it...and my word is not just something that can be taken lightly." He went back to being quite, having calmed down although he was breathing somewhat heavily.

SiRReN fled her podium and joined Sakura, falling to her knees beside the other girl. "It's going to be okay," she murmured. "It's going to be okay." She repeated it like a mantra, for Sakura and for her.

Ignoring everyone else, even the active Ryuji and Alchie, Sakura turned to SiRRen and gave what could be thought of as a smile, if you looked hard enough. "Thank you." She whispered. "It's going to be okay, I know it. We just have to... hold out hope." While she didn't want to admit it, she realised that the students most anti-hope were now gone, one way or another.

Crimson furiously wipes her tears, shocked that the only person she had somewhat related to had suffered such a terrible fate.

She then turns to face everyone in the room. "You know what...? If any one of you fuckers wants to pull another Cox-move, try me instead...I dare you!"

"The concept of religion is that you can either believe or not believe, but it doesn't change the way you live life. You're nobody's pawn Alchie, and nobody can force you to change except you, yourself. That's enough motivation to think that nobody is controlling you." Matt explained.

"We don't have to do the same. We can do whatever we want if we choose to, it's only a matter of how. I know a lot happened just now - but.. failure is meant as a stepping stone. If you can't pass it then you're never going to get back up. Understand me? So get back up."

Ryuji turned softly to Sirren. "Y-You're still going to cosplay with me, right? W-we're still going to perform for them, right?"

"I agree," Jay stated, still trying to wipe away his tears, "No matter what I am, it doesn't change the fact that I'm me. It all comes down to what we believe.

Me personally? I believe... in us." Jay stood back up, wiped the final tears away, and took a confident stance.

"We're all we've got now. The bear-and-rabbit-duo have already taken everything else away from us. Let's not give in and let them take that too. Are you with me?"

"I chose that comparison for that reason, you know?" Alchie gave a broken chuckle, wiping the tears from her face. "I'm nobody's pawn... yeah, that's right."

She breathed out and stood straight, hands clenching into a fist. "I may not seem like it now, but... I'm a Grandmaster..." She repeated the last three words to herself again, calming down. Once she was sure she had her emotions under control, she said aloud, "I'm sorry about that breakdown. I should know better by now..." She managed a smile. "Thanks, Matt."

"A banquet, huh? Sounds great."

"No problem, Alchie." Matt smiled. "You can count on me."

"A banquet sounds cool, though. Maybe we'll actually do the banquet this time."

"I-I'm still baking food for you guys," Ryuji said. "A-and I'll put on a show! You'll see the Ultimate Actor in his native land! His ultimate form!"

"W-well, I'm glad I didn't have to clarify this..." Sayako had just finished wiping her glasses dry and, upon replacing them, smiled brightly at the group. "Yes, yes, without a doubt! The banquet is still on! ...Only... maybe we should postpone until tomorrow night... A-a lot's happened today..."

She shuffled over to Sakura and stood awkwardly by her. "Er... Himawari-san...? A-are you alright?" she asked while looking like a hot mess herself.

"Yes," SiRReN said firmly, and she put an arm around Sakura's shoulders. "We are going to put on the best goddamn show anyone has ever seen, and we're going to bake sweets and have a party because we're all here and we're all alive. That's what's important."
