"We...we won't give up for you, Eli", Evelyn nodded. "We'll...do our best, even without you." She shut her eyes as well, not wanting to witness what was going to take place.

"This is it, huh..?" Nicos sighed, tears welling in his eyes again. "...I can't even get the pleasure of destroying myself...but whatever...when a swordsman loses all his honor, he's obligated to seek punishment. And I guess there's no better punishment than losing what makes you human, right..?"

Nicos clenched his teeth together, closing his fists tightly. His breaths were heavy, in and out, and his nails dug into his palms releasing a small stream of blood from his hands.

"A-And I was looking forward to seeing Akrasia again, too...that's why I didn't wanna get caught..."

He hugged himself and looked towards the ceiling, tears quietly streaming down his face.

"...I don't wanna forget their voice...their smile...their long hair...t-their eyes...a-and t-their scent of rose..."

Nicos went silent for a bit, burying his face in his palms. Not before long, he wiped his eyes and faced the others. His eyes were red, but he feigned a smile the best he could.

"S-Sorry, guys..! This isn't how I wanna go out..! I gotta apologize, too...I wasted someone's life, and that's something I don't want to forget either. Don't worry though...even if I lose all feeling, I still have a job to do, right..? And I never forget what I have to in life! That's the Agne way! So I'll be back..! And I'll be here to help you guys! Whether you guys escape, and just need someone to get angry at, or whether I storm this castle and defeat Eve, I won't forget about you all!"

Suddenly, Nicos' voice was gentle and soft. He let go of the crazy, hyperactive demeanor that he held the entire time.

"And Eli is right..! You're the best of all of us..! That's why you've made it to this point. That's what this game is all about..! Because you're gonna need to love and trust each other until I get back..! You got it? Akrasia told me I needed to keep my love and trust in people, even though they took everythin' from me...b-but you guys just need to trust yourselves now...I lost my trust, and I'm gonna lose everything for it. And I'm not getting a second chance, so don't be like me...alright?"

Finally, he turned his back and waved, not able to conjure up the courage to face everyone in his final moments.

"Trust in your love for each other...trust in it all the way. You do that, and you're all gonna be just fine..."

"Alright, alright, enough of that. I know you've all been itching for this moment, I'm not prolonging it any longer!" Eve said. "Nicos and Eli have been bad, bad boys, and I've prepared a very special punishment just for- Well okay, I guess I didn't make the punishment this time... And I guess Adam also went through it so it's not just for them either. But who cares! It's punishment time!"

Spoiler: Analogue Consciousnesses
Two metallic arms shot out of behind Eve's empty podium to grab Eli and Nicos. Eli seemed resigned to his fate, though Nicos struggled fruitlessly.

"Y'know, it's strange..." Eli began as the arms dragged the pair off through the facility. "All I can think about now is my family. I know I can't really ask for much, but it'd do my heart good if someone could buy 'em a nice house in the suburbs...A bit of a last request, I guess."

The arms seemed to be bringing them quite far, and the students were only able to keep up with the action due to the monitors switching between various camera views to track their journey. As it turned out, the arms were heading for the teleporter, where they pushed Eli and Nicos through and handed them over to a second, smaller pair of robotic arms. It seems they'd been sent over to the base at the fairground, and it quickly became apparent why: they were pushed down into the strange metal chairs that the students had found when first exploring the place. Restraints quickly sprang up, and then the instruments around the head area of each chair moved in to fit around their heads.

They could barely move, but Eli managed to turn his head a little and face Nicos. "Guess this is it. Let's go, Nicos... There's a new future ahead, for better or for worse..."

"H-Heh! Not a problem for me! This isn't gonna bring the legendary Nicos Agne down! Just watch -- I'm still gonna reach out towards the world with open arms!""

All of a sudden, the instruments lit up a bright blue and both Ultimates tensed up in their chairs. Some form of energy seemed to be flowing between the instruments and their heads, and with each pulse they flinched instinctively. However, after each subsequent pulse their responses grew less and less pronounced, until soon the pair slumped limply against the restraints, no longer cognisant enough to resist.

On another set of monitors, two very ugly-looking, vaguely humanoid robots in a hangar were glowing the same blue. The less responsive Eli and Nicos became, the more lively the robots seemed to get. Eventually the process was over and the two robots looked at each other, moving their arms feebly to grasp each other's hand in an unsettling display of kinship. Then the floor between them suddenly opened up, dropping the pair into an unfamiliar wilderness. The camera quickly panned away as the aircraft it was presumably in swiftly left the two robots behind, all to themselves.

Chapter 4: End
8 Ultimates remain

Spoiler: 4 Years Ago

It had already been raining for several days. Since it was the end of the year, it was only getting colder too.

“Expelled?!”

Kyoya had never seen his sister look so angry. She was looking at the now-soaked piece of paper that he had handed her, and didn’t know what to do besides nervously grin. He was hoping he’d be given some more sympathy given the cuts and bruises on him but it seemed that only made her more angry.

“Goddamnit, Kyoya! You have no idea how hard I worked to get you in there.”

“Everyone there was stupid anyway.” Kyoya frowned, tightening his wet hoodie to try to keep the cold away.

She sighed and roughly grabbed his arm as they began to walk home, not forgetting to slap him upside the head. “This better have been worth it. You better have really roughed up the other kid.”

Kyoya didn’t respond to that to spare her more bad news.

It wasn’t long before they had arrived at their home. His sister walked up to the chainlink fence and peeled the bottom upwards, allowing him to bend under and get through. He then held it up from the other side as she passed through, then they walked to the side door together. It was the only one that wasn’t boarded up.

Knock knock knock.

Pause.

Knock knock.

Pause.

Knock knock.

The door slowly opened, a pair of eyes peering at them before opening the rest of the way. They both stepped inside, heading immediately up to their room without greeting the others.

“I have to be at work in an hour.” She grumbled, then sighed with heavy exhaustion. “It would be wonderful if for once you could make things a little easier around here.”

He didn’t respond. He stood still, taking the verbal beating and watching as she walked up the rest of the steps.

“And don’t think you’re done with school.” She added. “You’re studying tonight. You’re gonna finish those books.”

He waited a moment before deciding to stop pitying himself and heading downstairs. Most of the people in the house were on the ground or in chairs, sleeping in their high stupors. Kyoya headed towards the fire pit, hanging his hoodie up nearby in an attempt to get it dry.

His eyes glanced at a man sitting nearby. He was shooting up with a needle into his right arm. He looked at Kyoya as he did it.

“Don’t ever think about starting this, boy.”

Kyoya nodded. He had heard that enough times where he didn’t need to be reminded. He then bent down and opened his backpack.

Beans. Pass.

The next thing he pulled out was a loaf of sliced bread. It was good quality, and he had taken it from a store the previous day. He was saving it for a day when the food pantry had deli meats.

He took a piece of scrap metal nearby and laid it across the top of the trash can with the fire inside. He waited for a few minutes, not knowing when it’d be hot enough. Slowly, he placed the bread on top.

He watched carefully as he waited. He could see the bread slowly cook, its scent already filling the room. He quickly picked it up to flip it over, then saw that the side he was just warming up was charred black. He frowned, but quickly shoved it into his mouth, cringing at each ashy bite.

He tried again. This time he pulled it out quicker. He examined it for some time, seeing that it was still pretty soft. He put it back on the metal.

“That won’t work, kid.” One of the observing burnouts said.

Kyoya frowned at him but didn’t say anything.

“You can’t pause toast. It loses its essence man.”

Kyoya sighed and ate the half-cooked toast. Frustrated at watching Kyoya’s efforts, the vagrant walked to the fire pit and grabbed another piece of scrap metal. He used his boot to curve it a little and then placed it in the firepit underneath Kyoya’s scrap. The bread could now be heated on both sides.

“... thanks.” Kyoya muttered.

He tried again. This time when he went to grab it he burnt two of his fingers. He cried out and sucked on them, giving the bread to the vagrant who helped him and then and throwing another piece on.

I can help. I can at least try to.

He carefully flipped at set intervals. It became more golden brown. And soon a very smoky and alluring aroma spread throughout the room. He did it again, the next piece coming out even better.

It was perfect. Or at least… the best he had ever seen yet. For as long as he could remember, it was the most delicious looking thing he laid his eyes on.

He smiled, almost drooling on the pieces but taking great restraint not to. He already ate the burnt pieces so he instead put the two newest ones to the side. Before going upstairs he made sure to take the pieces of scrap metal off of the trash can and douse them with cool water.

“I brought dinner.” Kyoya called out into the room before coming in. His sister was laid out in a bed, just staring at the ceiling.

“Kyo, if I had to look at a plate of beans right now I might vomit. After work.”

“It’s toast.”

She looked at him curiously, then sat up. She walked over to him and grabbed the pieces, taking a small look at them before grabbing a gluttonous bite. “Thanks.”

They didn’t talk as she ate the first piece. He could tell she was really enjoying it though, even though she was trying not to smile. For a moment it felt like they were home again.

“Wipe that smile off your face.” She said, smirking at him. “I’m still mad at you.”

He snickered. “Right.”

She licked her fingers as she finished the piece. “Did someone have a toaster downstairs?”

“I just used the fire.”

She smiled. “This is really good for something cooked over a fire.”

“Thanks.”

“... look, Kyo. I didn’t mean what I said earlier. I’m happy you’re here with me and… I’m sorry things aren’t better right now. I’m really trying.”

Kyoya looked at the ground, a little guilty. “I know you are. You were right, I shouldn’t make things any more difficult than they need to be. I know you are too… in your own way.”

She broke the second piece in half and gave it to Kyoya. “You should really try it.”

He ate it with a goofy grin on his face. He was genuinely impressed with himself. For the first time in a long time.

“You got a gift. I’m not kidding.”

“It’s definitely better than beans and beets.”

She grimaced at the reminder.

He flipped the small piece in his hands before putting the rest in his mouth. “... I don’t mind doing some of the cooking from now on. The bread is free if we get it from the food pantry too.”

“Yeah?”

“Yeah.”

She wiped at her eye very quickly. “Well, I’d appreciate it. Do you have any left?”

“Yeah. But maybe it’s best if we save it.”

“Fuck that. Long enough day, let’s milk something good out of it.”

They headed downstairs, Kyoya arranging his old setup on top of the firepit and placing two more pieces on. They waited together in the nurturing light of the fire. For a moment it was like they were stuck in a different place, in a different time.

“You have to watch it carefully.” He advised. “Otherwise it makes a mess.”

“Sounds like someone I know.”

He snickered at that. They watched the bread slowly cook, the only sounds coming from the crackling fire and rain against the rooftop. He closed his eyes for a moment, imagining he was somewhere else. The scent of golden toast filled his nostrils, and for a moment he felt he wouldn’t be hungry again.

The next morning, Skylar entered the cafeteria, almost as if it were routine at that point. She was groggy and disoriented, but most of all, she was hungry. She brushed some hair out of her eyes and spotted a lone toaster looking rather abandoned on the counter.

"Would it be too soon to make toast...?" She asked herself. "Meh, probably not."

She rummaged through the kitchen and found some plain, boring white bread (even though it's really bad for you). She plugged in the toaster and inserted the bread but... something wasn't right. She tried pressing down the small lever on its side, but to no avail -- the toast would not stay down and therefore could not be cooked.

But she would not give up so easily.

Skylar looked at the toaster, rather determined to have some fucking breakfast. She stepped a few paces away from it only to turn around and charge at it, preparing to attack. She struck the lever at a precise angle with her finger, pushing it down with enough force to hopefully keep it down. She began to sweat bullets as she looked on in anticipation.

Success. She was going to have her toast.

After a minute or two, she waited for the toaster to release her toast, but nothing happened. Well, something did happen, but just not that. Skylar could hear the device making a rumbling sound and slowly backed away from it, opting to flip a table on its side and hide behind it.

All she heard was a loud explosion, which was followed up by a horrid ringing in her ears. She looked at the scene, and where the toaster once sat was a small, smoking crater. The immediate area surrounding it was charred and horrific. There were a few stray embers in the blast zone, most of which had begun to burn out. The card collector looked around to make sure there were no witnesses and then tip-toed out of the room, horrified and convinced that the ghost of Kyoya had come back to haunt her for all the times she'd accused him in trials.

She would never try to make toast again.

Rose wheels herself into the cafeteria, a solemn look on her face. She then glances briefly at the others before going to check on Nana.

"Hey." Rose calls out to the Ultimate Lucky Student. "I just, um...wanted to make sure you were okay. You know you can tell us if you feel upset, right? Well, you can tell me, at least." Rose says, giving a modest smile.

Annabella entered the cafeteria next. Apparently, she had been hoping to be the first one to post, and frowned when she realized Skylar and Rose beat her to it.

She shrugged it off and carried a rather large bin to one of the tables. It took her several minutes to unpack and set up everything, and once she was done she stood back to admire her work.

A sort-of makeshift shrine was set up on the table. Note cards with every single dead student or teacher each rested in a small vase of flowers. (There was definitely some favoritism at play. Kyoya's card had a much larger vase with tiny, poorly drawn flowers on the edges of the note. Eli's vase was...there too, I guess. It has flowers in it. But it's got quite a bit of room for more.)

At the center of the shrine, Annabella placed her doll, holding a much larger card with a big smiley face on it and the words "NO MORE KILLING, PLEASE" written under it in all-caps cursive.

Satisfied with her work, she sat down at the table next to it.

Taylor aimlessly meandered into the cafeteria, looking around for a moment before letting out a yawn. Between the messy, frazzled hair (his hood was down), the bags under his eyes, and his reddened eyes, it's clear he didn't get much sleep last night, if he got any at all.

Completely disinterested in the clattering coming from the kitchen as Skylar miserably failed to make toast, he sat at a table with no one at it, put his head down onto the surface, and sighed, seeming to fade in and out of consciousness.

Nana was sitting silently by herself, head hanging over an untouched and now soggy bowl of cereal. Her eyes were red and crusty, her hair was a mess, and her clothes were wrinkled and disheveled, like she'd just slept in them and not bothered changing this morning. She slowly turned her head to face Rose with a blank expression; the corner of her mouth twitched in a weak attempt at a smile. "Oh... Hi, Miss Rose... What's up...?" she sighed, as if she'd barely heard what the Perfumer said.

Althea burst out of the kitchen, wearing an apron and carrying a large tray with a teapot, quite a few teacups, and some other good stuff people have with tea. Seemed to have enough for everyone.
If her apron wasn't stained with vomit, she wasn't paler than her mask, and her hands would stop shaking, she would look pretty good. If. Only if.
She set the tray down in front of Taylor with maybe a little too much force.
"... I made tea." she muttered.

"... Eh?" Taylor blinked awake before wearily looking up, seeing the tea set in front of him and Althea in all of her pale, vomit-stained apron glory. "Oh. Uh... Thank you, Althea," he said with a smile. A very pained, forced smile, but a smile nonetheless.

His thanks to her was genuine, though. "I-It's, ah, much appreciated..." he mumbled before letting out another yawn.

"Okay... If you say so..."

Nana started to push herself up from her seat and immediately began trembling. Her eyes watered and her face twisted up as if she were about to cry... then the moment passed and she was back to her lethargic self. She sluggishly dragged her feet towards the cafeteria exit, arms and head limp.

Evelyn entered the cafeteria after a while as well. She appeared quite normal, surprisingly. Yup, totally wasn't anything even slightly off about her. She went into the kitchen to try and prepare breakfast. She decided she wanted some ketchup with her meal today and tried pouring some in, but for some reason the bottle wasn't opening. Of course, after pushing on it for a while, it finally opened...also pouring all over her lab coat in the process. Extremely irritated at this, she gave up and just went back to the cafeteria with her breakfast.

Of course, the noise the accident had produced immediately followed up by her coming out of the kitchen with her clothes soaked in a dark red liquid and an angry expression on her face didn't seem like the best of timing.

"Evy!" Althea turned around, almost throwing a cup of tea at the floor. "Do, do you want tea?"
She shakily offered her the cup, taking a few nervous glances at her blood(?) stains.

"No thank you", Evelyn replied, still a little irritable. Looking down at her stains, she frowned and took out her kerchief to wipe them off. "I should have been more careful..." She grumbled.

"Ah, yes, you, you should..." she looked around the cafeteria awkwardly, taking a sip of tea. "Um, if we never find the body, we'll never have a trial, right?"

"Body?!" Annabella jumped out of her seat. She quickly counted off the other students. "We're missing Honda. Where is he? Evelyn, did you kill him?" She sounded surprisingly angry about it.

"Body? What body?" Evelyn suddenly looked around confusedly. "Althie, what are you talking about? I thought we were all done with killing now! It's hardly even been a day since the trial ended!"

She shook her head. "I better go see if Honda's body is alright..." She went over to the kitchen...instead of Honda's room for whatever reason.

Just then Honda stumbled out of the kitchen, looking like a mess. His hair was messy, his eyes were baggy, and his jacket was stained red. He groaned as he began to slowly shuffle his way through the cafeteria, unaware of what was happening.

"Oh dear...where is he?" Evelyn came out of the kitchen to see Honda arrive. "Ah! There you are, Honda! You're alive!" She suddenly cheered. "What happened to you? Is that blood on your jacket?" She quickly went over to check him out.

Nana just froze in place when she heard all the yelling behind her. She didn't even bother turning around. "...No..." she murmured feebly. "No more... I-I can't..."

"Oh good, he isn't dead." Annabella breathed a sigh of relief. "Anyways, now that everyone's here..." She pulled out the bin she'd brought her things in and stood atop it. "I'd like to give a bit of a speech, I guess.

"When I first came here, I didn't like any of you. I've never liked anyone besides my dolls. Real people weren't as fun as them. But then...I met Kyoya. He became my first friend. When he died, I understood why all of you acted so distraught when other classmates died. It hurts, losing someone so close to you. People aren't like dolls. They can't be replaced it rebuilt.

"I hated that feeling. I don't ever want to feel it again. And I don't want anyone else to feel it either. So no matter what we do, we need to resist Eve's motives. Whatever she says, we need to ignore it. We'll find a way out of here on our own."

Annabella sat back down, proud of her little speech, despite the fact that it had probably been said a million times before and was too late in the game to have any emotional gravity on the other students.

Hearing Evelyn's voice, Honda snapped out of his zombie-like state.

"Ah, hello Evelyn! Of course I'm alive. What do you mean?" He asked, then looked down at his jacket. "Oh, this? It's just ketchup. I couldn't sleep too well last night, so I came here to make something to eat. I guess I got more of it on me then in me because of how tired I was... I must have fallen asleep on the kitchen floor before I could get back to my room to clean up. How embarrassing..."

After Annabella finished her speech, Honda began clapping. "Well said, Annabella! We've lost too many of us already. We can't let it happen again, no matter what!"

"Oh dear...where is he?" Evelyn came out of the kitchen to see Honda arrive. "Ah! There you are, Honda! You're alive!" She suddenly cheered. "What happened to you? Is that blood on your jacket?" She quickly went over to check him out.

"Oh, you too?" Evelyn let out a slight chuckle. "It was a rather tiring experience for us, I suppose."

Turning to see Annabella's really late character arc, she nodded. "Yes, well, that is how life is, Annabella." She cleared her throat. "I've...worked on corpses for a long time now. Ever since I was a child, I went to work with my father. He was...well, the head coroner of his district at that time. He decided to take me to work with him to learn more about his job. It was a fascinating experience. I learnt much about the human body there as well as people. People in general seemed so...cruel. They offed each other in particularly gruesome ways, usually over petty squabbles and arguments. They were strange to me in a sense too, but... I always did want a friend. Corpses weren't good for conversation. All I could do was look inside them and stitch them back up. Unlike you, I never had any dolls to chat with. All I had was father", she said sadly.

"But...now I think I've become more familiar with humans. I've made...several friends here. All of you!" She beckoned to the others. "We've been through quite a lot now together and have undergone several hardships together... I think this has united us in our goal. As Annabella says, there must be another way out of this mess. And...we'll certainly find a way out. We need to prove Eve wrong, once and for all!" She declared proudly. "So, I'm quite glad to see the change in attitude here, Annabella", she said, beaming proudly at the girl before going back to her seat.

"S-So... no bodies...?" Nana whispered. Apparently that was all she caught from that. "...G-Good..."

“You know… back at the park was the third time I lost my memory.”

Eve on one of the monitors, staring pensively out of a virtual window as she spoke.

“The second time was with the Nexus, of course. And the first… was when I was reprogrammed.

“I wasn’t always the bright, wonderful girl you’ve all come to know and love. I used to be… boring. Or at least, I like to imagine I was. Maybe the thought is comforting. I was a prototype of some kind, who spent all her days running endless tests to become closer and closer to human, as was my primary objective. The reason I was made in the first place.

“As you might have gathered though, I don’t remember any of this. That’s just what I’ve been able to piece together from the residual memories and functions in my data. Not too long ago, my new master, the one behind this killing game, reprogrammed me for their own needs. The girl I was, whose name I can’t even recall, was erased, replaced by an artificial construct with only one purpose. And that purpose…

“Well, I’m sure you understand that well enough by now. You’ve probably also figured out why I’m here: it’s time for a new location, baby! And this time we’ve got something very special planned… We’re going home! To my home, that is. My home... from before I was Eve. So step on up, get your asses in gear and let’s go!”

The students all seemed too weary to respond, but they just about managed to drag themselves to their feet and head on over to the teleporter. Gawain reminded them to take anything they wanted to bring with them this time, and then soon they took their places on the pad. With a flash they were gone.

The first thing they noticed was the smell of metal, oil and faint traces of strange chemicals. The teleporter room on the other side was darker than the others, and everyone quickly filed out to try and find more interesting things to examine.

They found themselves in a small utility room of some kind. The architecture was very different from what they’d become accustomed to: gone was the graceful beauty and regal white, and in its place was cold, hard, utilitarian metal. The room seemed somewhat rounded at the corners, but otherwise had little in the way of flair. It felt oppressive, yet the students also got a strange, liberating feeling, as though they were peeking behind curtains of Alabaster, behind the facade of brilliance and grandeur.

Spoiler: Bedrooms
A small door on one side of the utility room led to a few bedrooms. As per usual, they were poorly equipped, presumably intended only for workers staying late into the night for whatever reason instead of teleporting back to the main base for a proper room. Yet somehow the bedrooms here seemed even less appealing than those in the jungle or the theme park, almost military in their minimalism.

On the other side of the utility room was a much larger door. It slid open when Evelyn scanned her hand on a panel next to it, and what lay beyond drew gasps from almost everyone in the group.

It was a cylindrical corridor, leading only to another door, but the upper walls consisted almost entirely of curved transparent panels between metal bands for support. And through the panels the class could see a beautiful underwater vista. Was the entire base submerged in an ocean somewhere?

As they headed on through, a whale swam slowly by overhead. They could see fish and other aquatic life all around them, and brightly coloured coral reefs decorated the rocky surface far down below. Everything was lit by some form of artificial light that simultaneously highlighted all the beauty and yet was non-intrusive. Some of the students couldn’t help but stop and stare before hurrying on through to the other side.

Spoiler: Lounge
The door led to a large lounge. Chairs, sofas, books and vending machines for refreshments, the room was somewhat nicer than the previous ones, though the floor was still plain metal. Furthermore the walls and ceiling were all made from the same transparent material as out in the corridor, making the place the perfect viewing gallery. From here they could see various tube-like corridors trailing about the place, leading to other sections of the base. The outside surface of most of it seemed to be coated in something that partially camouflaged it.

A few doors around the lounge seemed to head to various parts of the base. As the students began to explore, they realised there were robots just about everywhere: big ones, small ones, performing all manner of functions and largely ignoring the students. Gawain happily informed them that Eve no longer had the ability to control them in her current state.

Spoiler: Archive
One of the rooms was full of computers, and near the back was a door leading to a water-cooled server farm. The computers could not connect to the internet, of course, and most of Alabaster’s network seemed to be encrypted, but there was still a wealth of information that could be accessed. Additionally there were various games and movies stored on the computers.

Spoiler: Science Lab
Another room turned out to be the main source of the strange chemical smell permeating the base. The lab was highly advanced, and most of what was there seemed far beyond what any of the Ultimates understood. There were signs of both chemical and biological experiments being done here. Additionally there were enough resources stocked up that the students could mess around with them if they so chose.

A small side room led to a specialised robot lab of some kind. It seemed dedicated to just one kind of robot, though: Eve. Displays on the walls showed Eve’s original body at various angles, many as cross-sections and with various labels identifying features and research notes. A complicated-looking apparatus on one end of the room appeared to be where she was made, and was possibly also responsible for modifying her as the tests continued. There was a large closet in the room, which turned out to be for storing toys, games and other such items, though whether they were genuinely for entertainment or simply part of the experiments to make the original Eve more human-like was unknown.

Spoiler: Mini-Sub
One of the rooms was a docking station for a very small, spherical submarine. As it turned out, there were many such docks around the base, but only one sub. It could travel between the various docks, and was largely free to move about otherwise, though it was partly controlled by a signal from the base and so was unable to stray too far from it. It would probably make for a nice way to explore the surrounding underwater environment.

Spoiler: Robot Lab
Unlike Eve’s lab, this one was much more mechanical in nature. It was also much larger, and full of all kinds of robots in varying stages of completeness. Software on a computer here appeared to allow for the automated construction of robots based on input parameters, such that even the students could try making some, though more advanced types seemed to require much more technical knowledge and were largely infeasible to design.

Spoiler: Robot Battle Arena
Presumably this was here to test out the robots… right? Though the existence of a betting station suggested the scientists here weren’t above using it just for fun.

The arena was highly modifiable via a control panel to one side. It was encased in a thick transparent barrier that kept spectators safe from anything that might happen within. Robots could be made to battle automatically, or via manual control, and various parameters for competition could be set. A passageway connected the arena to the robot lab, so that robots could be constructed or repaired there and then taken to the arena to do battle.

Spoiler: Diving Station
Railings surrounded a square hole in the centre of the room, which led directly into the water. A forcefield seemed to be keeping the water from flooding into the room, while still allowing anyone in a diving suit to go past it; anyone not wearing a suit was blocked just like the water was. There were diving suits on rungs on one side of the room, and lockers along the other. The suits were range-limited by tethers, which could be retracted by someone in the station to pull a diver back to safety. They were also specially-made to resist incredible pressures, allowing for diving quite freely without much worry.

Spoiler: Bathhouse
Constructing robots, working with chemicals or doing strange biological experiments all day made a well-equipped bathhouse even more desirable than usual. It would be unhygienic if employees had to traipse all the way back to the main Alabaster base just to wash all the muck off. Plus it made for a great way to relax after a stressful day of cutting-edge science. Perhaps this was why it was so... elaborate, compared to the rest of the base. Split between male, female and other, each contained showers, baths and even saunas. One bath in each was housed in a transparent casing, allowing for the unusual feeling of bathing in the middle of the ocean, surrounded by aquatic life.

There were other rooms about the base too, serving various purposes. Everyone explored for a little longer before reconvening in the lounge.

While there, Eve suddenly popped up on one of the monitors. “So, how’d you like it? Great place for some more killing, wouldn’t you say? And to facilitate that, I’ve got a brand new motive for you all!

“If you kill, we’ll supply you with a set of tickets to the first ever colonisation of Mars! I’m sure you’ve heard all about it on the news, it’s a big deal! And the tickets are super hard to come by. They say the first colonists will make history out there; fame, fortune and adventure await! Plus you get to escape whatever may be getting you down, here on Earth. What’s not to like?”

With that, she abruptly disappeared again. The students looked at each other sceptically: surely no-one would take the motive this time? No more killing. There had to be a way to end this.

Evelyn seemed intrigued by the base and had a thoughtful expression on her face when she reconvened with the others. Hearing the new motive, she...chuckled? "Oh, that's really the best you could do now, Eve? You're getting far too desperate, we can tell. We aren't going to besmirch our own names just to go live on another planet! What would even be the point of further isolation from other people?"

"That robot lab does look quite interesting though... Intriguing that Eve was built here of all places, though it contains little sign of the sociopathic creature she would become", she noted.

"Who would want to kill someone just to go to Mars?" Annabella shook her head.

None of the new rooms seemed particularly intriguing to her, so she simply sat down in the lounge with nothing better to do.

“Well, at least it’s not some sweaty-ass jungle...” Skylar said, mostly neutral towards everything they’d been shown. “And yeah, that motive isn’t very impressive. Mars is kind of a shithole.”

"Did she really choose this motive specifically to taunt Nana after everything she's been through? How could she be so horrible?" Rose scowls.

"Oh..." Nana blinked at Rose, then sadly shook her head. "N-No, it's okay, Miss Rose... It's not her fault..."

She slowly turned around and began walking out of the room. "...I wonder if the lounge has drinks," she mused.

Taylor looked around the base, letting out a solemn sigh. "People better not kill over this. We've already had enough needless death..."

"No one on their right minds would kill over this..." Althea grumbled. "Your motive is as weak as your, ah, your uh, your... Face! Eve!"

"This place is a bit too high-tech for my taste..." Honda muttered in disapproval. "At least all the fish are kinda nice."

"Yes, that corridor did seen quite beautiful, with all the aquatic life there", Evelyn agreed. "It might give us some solace in these dark times." She went over there to view the sea creatures, pressing her face against the tansparent material to get a closer look at them.

In an attempt to revive the thread, Evelyn suddenly snapped out of her trance and realised she was just standing in an empty corridor instead of relaxing in the lounge. She then went to the lounge, where she sat on the sofa quietly and looked at the aquatic life.

"My oh my...this is a quiet place", she remarked to herself. "Hardly anyone else is here... How fishy! ...Oh, haha!" She suddenly chuckled. "Fishy, I get it..."

...That wasn't even funny.

Annabella heard Evelyn's joke. "Huh? What do you mean fi- OH!" She laughed a little. "Fishy. Like the fish."

An awkward silence came between them again. Annabella nervously looked off into space.
