Another variation of the What are you ___ing now topics.

Basically just tell everyone what reading material you are currently reading.

For me, I'm re-reading The Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Awesome series of books, the Guide. Hilarious.

I love that series. You should try playing the text game. Incredibly hard.

Currently, I'm reading Catch-22. Because a friend recommended it. It's...quite odd.

I'm reading "Night" by Elie Weisel for English class. Also I'm reading "Heart of Darkness" by Joseph Conrad for the same class.

I need to pick up a book for A.P. U.S. History. We have a critical review due in late March. ><

Eldest is Star Wars with dragons.

Seriously.

Right now I'm reading a collection of short detective stories by Raymond Chandler.

I'm only really reading the ones with the classic first person narration. There's something exceptionally charming about the first person narrative to me recently. I blame Hotel Dusk.

I am reading Hannibal Rising, by Thomas Harris. I couldn't put Silence of the lambs down, even though I saw the movie. This was a must have book for me x__x
Just finished reading Watership Down by Richard Adams.

I could never get into the Hitchhiker's Guide books x_x I feel like I'm missing out ^^' Sorta like Lord of the Rings.

After watching the animated Watership Down movie, I don't think I could ever read the book.

I could hardly watch the movie to be honest.

Yes, I'm serious. Everyone in the class so disliked reading the book that people sneak out of class just to advoid reading it. And it didn't help that the teacher stop ever 10 lines to explain stuff to the class even if we understood it.

XD. That reminds me of last year when my teacher assigned us some book about how to be really successful in life or something. It wasn't even a novel. <_< People hated the book so much she told us we didn't have to read it a week later.

Gosh, though... It's been a while since a read a book last. Like, a few months, since October or November. My teacher told me she wanted me personally to read "Angels of Darkeness" (I think that's the title) by Caleb Carr. It looked like a good book, but I was reading something else at the time, and then when I finished, I was just to embarrassed to start reading that... and I haven't read since. V_V

For school, I'm reading To Kill a Mockingbird! :D I remember when I first joined, people were asking that one guy Atticus if that's where he got his name from and stuff... As far as the book goes, I've read less than a chapter, and it seems like another southern novel to me. >.<

The book gets really great farther into it. I was pretty so-so when I started it, but by the time we finished I loved it. I hope you can get into it, too; it's a really great book. :3

Why does everyone hate Eldest? Sure it is a heck of a lot like Empire Strikes Back, but it still has enough original ideas to not be a complete and total Star Wars knock-off. Besides, anyone remember learning about the Hero's Journey in High School English? Doubt it. But if you do, you might know that pretty much all stories have the same format.

For English class, I'm reading Sir Thomas More's Utopia. It's very... long-winded, but at least it's not tediously boring. The translator did a good job in translating it from Latin into modern English.

Aside from that I haven't been reading anything casually as of late. Most of what I read casually is in online publications.

I thought that book was boring when I started reading it in 8th grade, but I really got into it after some chapters.

The last book I read through fully was Wanderlust by Danielle Steel. Now though, I'm currently finishing up (last 18 pages) Lord of the Flies by William Golding (20-day overdue library book). Next will be Mostly Harmless by Douglas Adams (... ... ...51-day overdue library book), then The French Lieutenant's Whore Woman by John Fowles. (Not overdue. :o )

Stepping into more illustrated literature, I'd continue reading Fruits Basket if the second and third volumes would get returned to the school library sometime soon.

Oh, sorry, it's not a complete Star Wars knock-off because there are dragons in it.

To aid in my explanation of why the Eragon series is lame, I enlisted the help of a few good friends from another forum.

Quote:
A child with a magical legacy is raised by his uncle in a remote village where he lives a mundane and unsatisfying life, until he accidentally stumbles across a tie to his mystic lineage that changes his life forever. Taken in by a crazed old hermit who is more than he appears, the boy travels across an evil empire in order to save a beautiful princess. On his way, he is joined by a roguish and morally noncommittal character. After rescuing the princess from an evil fortress, he seeks refuge with a rebel force, only to have his safety threatened by an assault from the wicked empire. during a protracted battle, the boy wins the day by performing a highly improbable task and is given a cool medal.

What is this describing?

Quote:
Spoiler: the book
He was raised by his uncle, then found a dragon egg that set him on his destined path (rather than droids, you see). His uncle is killed by the evil empire looking for the egg, and he escapes with it. He finds out that he has a sibling that he was separated from at birth, and in the second installment of the trilogy, learns that his father is the evil leader of the bad guys.

Also, all of the names for his places are incredibly derivative of locations in LotR.

There may have been more than that, but it's been a while since I've made fun of Paolini and Eragon, so my memory is foggy.

Also, a quote from the author
Quote:
"In my writing, I strive for a lyrical beauty somewhere between Tolkien at his best and Seamus Heaney’s translation of Beowulf." --Christopher Paolini

The fact that he thinks his stories actually don't suck donkey balls never ceases to annoy me.

I do realize that this was a piece written by the dude as a kid, and that his parents owned a publishing company and passed it off as a true piece of literature, but still. I think that most kids write like this, and that this guy receives way too much credit for doing something that the average teenager can do if they have the patience for it. The fame of the book is basically just because his parents were vain enough to publish it.

I'm not saying that people aren't allowed to enjoy the series, but I find it absurd that it's become this loved and well known when it's Star Wars with dragons. And don't even give me that Hero's Journey excuse, because that has such a wide range of possibility that it's not an excuse to entirely rip off someone's film.

I just finished that about two weeks ago in English class. We had to make a film about it. XD It was really fun, and totally cheesey. But a few of them were actually somewhat good.

I loved that book. I had to read it the summer before my Freshmen year. That and "The Autobiography of Ms. Jane Pittman." That book was AWFUL. It was so boring. And to top it all off, Ms. Pittman wasn't even real. Someone wrote a super boring book about someone that didn't even exist. Pissed me off, it did.

At the moment I'm reading Anne Frank's diary; I started reading it as part of a German project for school - a shameful reason to get into something so profound - but now the project's over, I'm not just going to stop; it's really a book that has to be read, without me preaching or anything...xD

At the same time, I'm on the second Death Note manga: pure awesomeness!
