I thought he was just being stupid when I first read that. I was shocked to play it again and realize that he was on the right track. He really did love her... And Iris, poor thing. She just might have loved him more.

I dunno, I kind of think that even without GS4 cutting Phoenix's romantic oppertunities off at the knees, Phoenix/Iris still wouldn't be canon. Like others have pointed out, the writers themselves treat Iris more like a plot device than a real love interest. She and Phoenix aren't pictured together in the end. She's not in any of the official art that was created even after GS3. Phoenix doesn't come out and say he wants to get back together with her. The end of the game did tie up some loose ends, but the two of them are left completely open, and I think that's for a reason.
There's plenty of room for it in fanfiction, sure, but as cute as I think the couple is, I can't really see them together after 3-5.

Yeah, when you think about it, it's quite sad really. That's why it's one of my fav couples in the series, the two were both willing to do die for each other, and if Iris knew about Dahlia's plan things could've turned out for the better...

So much talk of fanfiction... I never really thought myself as much of a writer, despite my sophomore English teacher praising my crapass short story as one of the best student works she's ever read (it was written in, what, two days!?). But, my talents have certainly improved. If I can't whip out any fanart, I might try my hand at some fanfiction. Iris is just... Well, really, it goes without saying here. She's irresistable. Okay, I'm done being stupid now. Mostly I find pictures through exploring links already posted in the Cute Couples and the General Art thread. Not only are most of these sites huge and therefore many of the pictures have not been posted, but they often have links to other sites which have links to others after that. It's rather amusing when you aren't busy and sometimes you really strike gold. If you'd like some good sites to start off with, you can PM me (letting me know what couples besides Phoenix/Iris you're interested in) and I can recommend a few to start off your search.

Pairings do not need to be canon for them to have merit. Just because the creators don't make them a couple doesn't mean millions aren't going to draw fanart of them. Take a look at Ronnie/Dessie. They're so canon, it hurts, but people aren't tripping over each other to make fanart and fics about them.
