Actually, I do some sketches (mostly stick-men (is that the correct word?)), then I scan them and clean them with Gimp. It's not easy, and I don't know all the things I could do with Gimp.
And I'll made a warning, promise!

I've never ever seen Balrog's face, so I made this based only on description. It seems I succeeded.
It's not 100% accurate, but it's the best I could do. Especially because he wasn't able to make a good description of himself :p
