I think you just need to work a little bit on your colours. You seem to be picking strong, vivid colours, or what I like to refer to as the MS Paint Default Palette. :) Have a look at the official GS sprites, or even some of the good spriters around this forum (Zinle, Kyn, Ceres, RandomJib, Cold52, Lind, just to name a few off the top of my head (whoever I didn't mention, I'm sorry! I'm sure you're good, too!)) and notice their use of colours; they're more subdued, and sorta... I dunno, pastelly? They're not like BAM THIS IS 255 RED, 0 BLUE AND GREEN, BITCH, which is what a few of your sprites suffer from. ALSO jaggies; have a look into anti-aliasing and I'm sure your sprites will turn out better.
I don't really know how to describe it, but just make sure your sprites look GOOD. That's a really dick thing to say, and I don't mean it in a negative context, but your sprites to me just convey a bit of a lack of polish. Spend that extra hour working on 'em, you know?

Hahaha, I have the unfortunate ability to be pretty good at spriting/graphics in in general, but I have shit-all ideas so I never make enough sprites to make my own topic here. :( Lurking here and checking out all the sick new sprites that everyone posts is my guilty pleasure ;-;

To help give you an idea of what I was talking about earlier with colours, I redid your Trucy edit from scratch using your colours as a guide.
Notice how it's a LOT easier on the eyes? It all comes down to the colour choice and shading; you've missed a bit of shading in your original, and the colour choice is very strong, very powerful. I held back a lot when editing (but good christ it was hard getting that orange or red to look any good (and that's debatable even now!)), and the result is a lot smoother, you see?
Kudos on the badge instead of the gem, by the way! Nice detail I didn't notice at first. It's good you've gotten into little touches like that; when you get further along with your spriting, adding small nuances like that will literally make or break a sprite, and help distinguish it from its base sprite. At the moment, this is a dead-set Trucy edit, the only thing borrowed being Hobohodo's beanie. If you keep fiddling and adding little things, mixing in parts from other people (hoorah for frankenspriting!), you can have an original looking sprite before you know. OK maybe I'm overblowing it a little bit, but keeping adding these small touches! For great justice!
ALSO while I'm going at this Trucy edit, one thing that I noticed when I finished my rejig was that god damn there are a lot of colours. There are probably far too many colours, to the point where it's distracting. Note that every character has a sort of COLOUR SCHEME attached to them:
Apollo: Red? Red for me at least!
Grossberg: Orange
Larry: Depends on outfit, but generally his ORANGE jacket
Edgeworth: Maroon
Phoenix: Blue
Maya: Purple
Klavier: Purple
Kristoph: Sky Blue
Mostly distinguished by the clothes they wear; this character has about 6 million different colours going on, which makes it hard to really CONCENTRATE on any one specific part, you know? Give Mira a colour scheme! Don't make her the rainbow! :)
OK so I've pretty much ripped your sprite to pieces and that is a terrible thing to do, but I've tried to be CONSTRUCTIVE about it and give you advice, which I'm hoping you'll take the right way. ;-; I'm not trying to discourage you from further spriting; quite the opposite! In my lurkings, I've already seen Cold52 go from a fairly meh spriter at first to a pretty god damn fabulous one at the moment, and I'm hoping to see you follow the same path.
Keep workin' at it and you'll soon see results.
Me too, buddy, me too, but I'm a writer by trade so my ideas come in the forms of words, not pretty pixels ;(
EDIT: Mother of all that is holy, that is a long post. If you want me to run through any of your other sprites, give me a buzz and I'll see what I can do!
EDIT 2: If you haven't got an eye for things that look right/wrong together, try using a colour wheel and using complementary/analogous contrasts (can you have a complementary contrast? Man, the class where they taught me this stuff was so long ago), likeeeeeeeee I think it was Lind suggested earlier in the thread. They help!
