Hm. At the risk of being cruel, and the fact that my skills with Photoshop/GIMP are pretty poor so it's a bit cheeky for me to say anything at all, I'm going to have to go ahead and say I don't like this one as it is. That said, there's not a lot wrong with it, so let me explain:
First off, kudos on the background work and contrasting border, it's superb. Nice choice of font and feather effect on the text in the bottom-left. My first issue is with the Mia and Edgeworth sprites; the colour seems unnaturally distorted to the point where it actually gives the foreground a feeling of low quality, and it's detracting from the power of the image (edit to clarify: it's too bright). :/ Were you trying to emulate the effect of the lightning in the background on their faces? If so, it's a nice idea, but it's not really worked; if you simply used the sprites as they appear in-game it would look much clearer, more effective and powerful, I believe. :)
Now for the second issue, I have. This one's awkward because you're following a request, after all and the request specifically asked for a red on the left and blue on the right background; but it doesn't look right to me somehow. There are two ways to look at this: one, the red background could represent Mia's passion and force as attempts to acquit her client against Edgeworth's cool, calm controlled demeanour, represented by blue. However, I feel it would be more appropriate the other way round; to have the red represent Young Edgeworth's twisted sense of superiority and justice and have the blue represent Mia's relatively innocent demeanour and personality. I think it would look better with the background colours swapped around and I'd like to see how it turns out. ^^
Sorry to go against the flow somewhat; I like your work and I keep my eye on it but I don't like to post anything if I don't have anything meaningful to contribute. ^_^;

I made the changes I suggested personally; the hard part was re-doing the font; GIMP didn't want to co-operate. Anyway: now hopefully you see what I was getting at. Let's put them side-by-side.
