I'm terrible at sports, too. Go us!
I'm not a sporty-type of person.. I'm more of a introverted, indoors-y type of person. I'm a major computer nerd, so to speak.
However, I do enjoy watching soccer from time to time. To keep in shape and tone my body I do yoga and pilates with some friends, as well as simple workout routines or running. :)

I would never go to a con by myself.. it can be sketchy when you're walking back to your hotel room at night, ya know?
For Otakon I carpooled with two other friends, and then met up with four other friends later that day. I prefer going to cons in mid-size groups (3-5 people). Larger groups are fun, but it's difficult to reach a consensus on what events to attend that day.. and some people may feel like their opinion is ignored or silenced. I try to avoid leaving people out.

I look nothing like Ema but I love her character. I love learning about science so that works out. XD

To keep in shape I walk my dog, but with my dog it's more of a he walks me kind of thing. XD He's seven years old but he's still a huge puppy, really. I wub my doggy. ^w^

Going to a con with friends would rawk, but I have no anime-loving friends. I do know a couple people who like Naruto and such, but none who like Gyakuten Saiban. I've very nearly converted one of my close friends, though. The only thing keeping him back was that he though that you have to yell OBJECTION into the mike. Silly boy.

Ema is amazing. XD I love how her character developed in AJ. I also love how she acts around Klavier. HATEEEE!! I love the insults she has too. Especially that one...Would you like a dose of somethingihavenoideasomethingsciencyENATE. XD

Hi there, Vicki!

Sorry I haven't replied sooner, I had some problems with my time and the internet.

I'm glad you're enjoying your class. :edgy:
Women in VideoGames... interesting... I didn't know such a classes existed.
The only thing I'm gonna be involved with games is that in a month we'll have a exposition or presentation from all the students in the class with a free choice of what to talk about and BTW we have to talk for half an hour.
So I decided to look for someone interested to be my teammate.
I can get a lot of info about games... origins, changes through the time, scandals, the games today, we can present videos, sing, dress, diapositives, etc.

Sorry... I just letted myself go on... so what's your "408: Women in video games" class about?

Baron: Good work on those drawings... maybe I`ll show some of my best works... that aren't that great anyway... XD

Bye.
Thanks. It was, is and always will be a pleasure.

Thanks! Don't be afraid to show your drawings. I'm sure Vicki won't mind.
Speaking of Ema and drawings, I found one I did last year. I'll be sure to upload it soon. I also have a Ryuta Ippongi (from Ouendan) drawing to share as well. :phoenix:

Well, opening night was last night, and it went amazingly!

There was a few flubbed lines in the song, and a chunk of dialogue skipped, but it went perfectly otherwise. Granted there are some mic issues and cues that need better timing, but everyone did well and the Opening Night part was epic (we had the most intense game of Catchphrase you can ever imagine.

Although, they didn't mention me in the program (as a spot light operator) they only put me in the crew listings, which is the equivilant of a consilation prize or a participant award at a competition. I might put scans later, who knows. But I had a good time, and I htought If tell everyone how awesome it was!

Air: Glad to hear it! :)

Lunaria: Indeed. Sure, I'm sure there will be some photos from the conference. :)
Good luck with the assignment! I'm sure you'll do great.

Minami:
^__^ I'm glad you like it!

Nadindi: Haha, that's an adorable image (being walked by the dog instead of vice versa). I don't have any pets, but I will probably get a dog in the future.

No anime-loving friends, eh? I don't really have any either, but my friends appreciate any type of subculture like anime, video games, etc. even if they're not huge fans of any particular series. Heck, I'm a newbie when it comes to anime (I really need to catch up on some series), but I love cons nonetheless. It's just fun to be with your friends either in cosplay or surrounded by cosplay. :D

Hahah, yeah, Ema is adorable when she's like rarar around Klavier. :)

Gray Godot: Women in video games isn't a class ^__^;; It's a paper topic for my class which is WST 408. The basic assignment for the course is to do independent research on any topic of our choosing. I decided to go with video games because I've written at least five papers on different aspects of gaming/games during my undergraduate career. :)

That sounds really cool, the video game presentation thing. Good luck :B What are the specific topics that you want to discuss?

You should show your work :D

Baron:
Showing more drawings would be great! :]

Percei: That's great to hear~!! :D Congratulations on putting on an awesome show!

You've never been! OMG you're missing out!
There is one in London every half a year, the MCM expo. It's an awesome event. You should check out the site and go if possible. Drag your friends along, I'm sure they'll still enjoy it as it has games before they come out and anime and celebrities! (Last time I saw some of the Heroes cast and played Street Fighter 4 and MK VS DC before they came out!) I think the next one is in May. I hope you can go. It's definately worth it. :will:

Miran: Sure, Miran. I'll add you to the waitlist :)

Missile: Awww, thank you, Missile. I notice a minor name change. :)
I'm glad you appreciated the work I've done for you! ^__^

Nadindi: Aww, poor lab! (and poor you x__x) ^^;
Conventions are amazing, as Selom has noted. Everything and anything goes on - the highlights are usually the panels (workshops, anime showings, talks about anime/japanese culture/video games/etc. topics.. anything goes), the dealer's room (usually a big room with tons of things to buy relating to anime/video games/etc.), the artists' alley (people sell their art), and the masquerade (a big "talent show" where people perform skits).

Every con is different but most anime cons have the above four things. :D Of course, the best fun comes from hanging out the people you go to the con with. If you don't go with anyone, it's easy to meet some new and interesting people!

Oh, and seeing amazing cosplay or recognizable cosplay from a game/anime you love is always awesome. I've taken many pictures from the cons I've attended. ^^

For a full list of events, etc. at conventions, you can always check their websites. Some celebrities do show up at certain conventions like a voice actor or whatever.

BC: Thanks! :B
I hope you get your chance to attend a con soon. It's a great experience.

GDM: Sure thing :]

Well... anyway if it's not a class... What kind of female characters have you used in your investigations? And in that thing of the papers what aspects of games did you write about?

Well... I have to talk for 30 minutes between me and my partner but what I plan to do is to get everything I can:

-Origins
-Changes
-Scandals
-The games now
-Good things about games
-Bad things about games (even if I'm sorry we all know there are some bad things)
-Videos about some games like trailers, cut scenes, etc.

Those are some of the things I could use... and maybe dressing as some character xD... but it's not a bad idea.

Thanks! I'll use the scanner one of these days and upload something.
Thanks. It was, is and always will be a pleasure.

I'm very sorry to hear that, Vicki. When I was in high school someone that my husband was acquainted with chose to end his life early as well. It's always a tragedy no matter who it is, or what the reason is. It's even worse when it is a fairly young person. Only time will help you, not forget it, but move from it and learn from it.

Going back to your earlier question... in my research, I focused on various characters from different series. For example, some of the characters I talked about are: Ivy from Soul Calibur, Fiona from Haunting Ground, Lara Croft (lots of research on her so I didn't want to make her the only focus of my paper; only briefly discussed the controversy), and Princess Peach. These characters are in different sections so don't assume I'm saying that Princess Peach's character is too revealing or something. >__>;

I wrote about the portrayal of women in video games, with a particular focus on hypersexualized imagery and then gender stereotypes (woman as healer, woman as passive, "damsel-in-distress"). I then mention a bunch of "exceptions" and some signs of progress within the gaming industry (ex. Zoey from L4D, Mirror's Edge). My conclusion is mostly about finding decent solutions for a better future of gaming (i.e. no longer assuming all men are sex-hungry loners who only care about breasts and instead, actually care about game content/mechanics/etc., and no longer portraying women as solely sexual objects with no real personality or lacks character development). Sales could definitely increase if some games were marketed differently, so it could benefit the companies in a substantial way.

You have good topics for your discussion. :) Good luck!

Lunaria: Sorry to hear that. This is the second suicide this year (that I've heard of) on my campus. I just had a classroom talk from the Center of Outreach and Prevention about depression and suicide just last week, too. :/

I don't know if I'm late to the punch (knowing myself, I probably am), but my condolences about the tragedy. Strangers are just friends you haven't met yet. We're all connected in some way, so it's logical to feel odd when something happens to someone you don't know. Suicide is a big problem and even to be in the midst of it is pretty staggering. Again, my condolences to your fellow student.

Ahh that's quite a research in female characters. XD Obviously Princess Peach it's not the most revealing female character of all times XD.

If you want to find good examples of female characters maybe you could use Resident Evil except for Rebbeca Chambers who is the rookie from S.T.A.R.S and carries things that a HEALER would carry. XD

And you're right it would improve to have dominant female characters as a protagonist, it would be very good.

Personally I didn't like Fiona from Haunting Grounds, she was just a copy from various characters like from clock tower or rule of rose...

Well thanks for the support for the presentation, I appreciate it.

Best Wishes...

I haven't read Vicki's paper, but I bet Princess Peach falls into the "damsel in distress" category. In most Mario Bros. games you have to rescue her from Bowser. In her own game her powers are based on emotions. The ones I remember particularly are crying/sadness and fire/anger. I forgot what wind was supposed to be, and she also has healing/love. Those are some crappy powers for a protagonist in any game, and its even worse for a game centered around a female character.

Yayy

Anyway, I finally have an idea of what I would like on the banner now.
Spoiler:
Size: Banner size? Whatever you think is appropriate.
Color scheme: Dark Greens, blues, and a little black.
Text: Sammie's Sprites Objecting at Another Level
With: Image Image Image

Or other poses of those OCs that you think might work.
Thread located here

Basically, I just started a forum and it would be nice to have a banner whenever I advertise for it on other sites or something like that.

So if you feel up for it, I would really love a banner of that sort.
I understand if you don't wanna though XD

BC: My heart goes out to his family/friends... anyone that knew of him, really.
And thanks, unfortunately I've been recently preoccupied with way too much work and other responsibilities, but I try to find the time when I get back from work to work on some requests.

GDM: You're very welcome. :)

Asaki:Completely agreed - we're all connected, and I know that I care about people that probably don't even know who I am.

Gray Godot: It wouldn't just help to have main female protagonists because we already have games with that - Dead or Alive Beach Volleyball, for example. :x We need more than that in order to improve things.

Fiona was in my section of negative portrayals of women.. particularly because you can unlock certain outfits like the "Illegal in Some States" outfit. I'm not very fond of how her character is portrayed at all. >__>;

Lunaria: You're right on point. I played Super Princess Peach before, and that's basically it - Peach is assumed to be overemotional (either she's sobbing so much that she makes vines grow, "PMS"ing when she is angry/on fire..), echoing traditional stereotypes of women.

A point I made in my paper about Mario Bros. series - Peach gets captured about 7-8 times in the series (of the games I counted). You would think that she would take some defense classes (karate, perhaps?) after the third time she got captured and then rescued. Sheesh.

Sammie: Sure! Haha, yeah, I reserved a spot for you because you basically committed to a request a page ago. :]
Your sprites are so good! I'm impressed.

((Sorry I haven't replied in awhile! Trying to concentrate on other things and haven't been on Court-Records. :( ))

Late to the condolences, but I offer them. Especially to the family and any loved ones. It's sad to hear of those who feel they have nothing left in the world :sadshoe:

Ugh, I keep putting that explanation off, Vicki (haha, do you even remember that? lol). Honestly, it was a miscommunication and mix-up on my part, overall. Ugh, why do I still have a headache? :payne:

Anyhow, hope life is treating everyone all right! Despite some sadness all around; eh, in a way, tragedy bitterly brings people together... such bittersweetness... :yuusaku:
(Sorry, I have a difficult time staying sad for long. I'm not that much of an optimist, really, but I bounce back from bad news too easily, sometimes. It's odd)

I really wished they would have given her a better game with better powers. The only one I can really think of where Peach is on par with the other character is the USA version of Super Mario Bros. 2. The only reason she is on the same level as the others in that version is it's nature as a ported game. I'm not sure if you aware of the history of it, but that version is originally another game in Japanese called Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic. They didn't want to release the Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2 here because it was like the first version, but the difficulty level was much greater.

I would think that after the first or second time, she would have take some self defense classes. Peach is probably the most helpless female character I can think of in gaming right now.

Speaking of female characters, have you played the new Star Ocean game? My husband has been playing it and some of the women in that game are just annoying. One of them has breasts that jiggle at every movement the character makes, and the others just seem really dumb (they are from underdeveloped planets he said, but it still is annoying to hear them talk). Just because someone is from a less technologically advanced society doesn't mean their portrayal needs to be moronic.

Spoiler: Contains mention of sexual content, but is not explicit and is about literature, but I thought I would be safe and spoiler tag it.
Oh my, how many tangents will I go on today. Just now I am reminded of a play about the empowerment of women, sort of, written by Aristophanes. It is called Lysistrata and is about a woman who decides she has had enough of the war between Athens and Sparta. The protest she and the other women agree upon is withholding sex from their husbands. I've read several translations of this play (I wrote a paper about the differences in translation) and in all of the the Spartan women, since they come from a less educated society, all speak less intelligently than the Athenians or other women from the outlying City-states. I guess its a trick writers use to differentiate voice, but its still degrading in my opinion. It's an excellent play if you haven't read it. It's not very long, and most of the translations are really good from what I can tell. The one I had to read for class was translated in 2001.

Caelestis: Hi!!~ You've been missed! XD; Don't worry about it - I've been busy with schoolwork and stuff as well.
What explanation? :X Haha, I have a bad memory, sometimes.

: Hi!~ Thanks, and sure. :B

Lunaria: Yeah, that's why Peach aggravates me to no end. ~__~;
Nope, never played any of the Star Ocean games. The jiggling phenomenon sounds similar to Ninja Gaiden II - Sonia will turn around and her breasts will jiggle for like a minute after that simple turn. GAH.
Haha, I like your commentary on video games; do you have any other thoughts on other games or characters? What are some characters you admire, for example?

I actually read Lysistrata in my "European Traditions" course about a year ago. I don't remember what translation it was but it was in the Norton Book of Classical Literature. :]

Incendiary: Hey there! ^__^ Oh man, my art teacher in high school used to call me the Vickster. It was amusing. My friends then tried to make new nicknames for me like the Vickilinski, the Vickerooni...
Thanks a bunch :B <3
Things are great, no complaints here... Nah, I wouldn't ever force/tell/advise anyone to take hours of their free time to read this topic XD;

What's up with you? :)
When is spring break for everybody? Mine is in April. So close, yet seemingly so far away. o__o''

Starting backward because I'm just so cool like that, not.

I think our translation was the Signet Classics version. I want to say the translator was John Butt, however, I could be mistaken.

I'm glad you like my commentary on video games. On of my dreams is to one day get to write about them, but so far I'm at a loss (both in how to and financially) as to starting in that field.

As for my thoughts on other games or characters. . .give me some time to think of something better to say than just, I like x,y,z because of a,b,c. I have some work I need to get done first before I can write any video game related essays.

Also yeah, I understand. That's sad about the suicide. A girl at my school once decided to take her own life too. Even if she was a couple of grades above me and I didn't even know her, going to school that day and finding out was just like stepping into ice :(.

Awww shucks D;. It's not that great XD''. Oh, and how I made it? Good question D;. Hmm... -tries to remember what she did-

Yeah; when I make stuff it's often just me randomly throwing stuff together D8. The whole background was a mix of random brushes I found on DeviantArt, all thrown together with different colors. I also went into my blending modes (Right click layer, Blending modes...) and did a pattern overlay on the background. I made sure I had the colors match those of Maya. Also, when I place text, I go to the blending modes again and apply a stroke, which gives the text it's outline, as well apply a drop shadow. Hmm... what else? Oh! I duplicated the layer with Maya on it, and on the bottom one, I set the blending mode to "Hard Mix". That gave Maya the sorta red-ish shadowy thing behind her. Lastly I created a new layer (Below Maya, on top of background) and selected the top and the bottom, colored them purple and then brushed the whole thing off with some white brushes.

...Yeah, I think that's about it @__@. Not exactly a big help ^^''. When I make stuff, I tend to be incredibly random DX! ...And thanks again, ^^''.

I tend to be pretty random too when I play around with graphics, so it's good to know I'm not the only one who does that.

Lol, Vicki :edgy: NVM then... :P

Ah, women in video games? Sounds like an extraordinary topic! XD From my perspective, things seemed to have gotten a little better than they used to be (as far as using girls in video games as either useless, whiny girls and/or as pleasurable sights for guys), but of course, some things never change :(

In any case, can't wait!

Oh, and I'd believe it's a class. If there is a class called Russian Witch studies (and there is), then I can believe in a class called Women in Video Games, lol.

I've been alright. Busy, but I'm excited because I'm finally in one of the mainstage shows at my school this year (finallllllly!). Ensemble, but at this point, that's better than nothing! :edgy:
I've been feeling a little sluggish lately, thought. Not depressed, mind you, but I've lost drive for a lot of my numerous interests and creative endeavors (notice the word numerous, lol). I kinda feel like I've had a creativity-block and I'm trying to pick that up again. This is including writing, drawing, graphic-stuff, music composition, attempting to learn animation, etc.
I don't think anything's wrong, but this feeling of boredom doesn't come to me often, and for once I'm feeling it. I'm also feeling a bit ADD in that I can't stay doing one thing (partly due to that I can't think of anything to do with each of those activities). I've found it easier to lounge and read or play video games lately. I haven't done those a lot lately, so maybe that's good for me...? I dunno.

I didn't mean to lay that all out for you guys :payne: But as other creative minds, maybe you'd guys'll understand better. *shrugs* Anyhow, how 'bout all ya'll? :edgy:

Max: Awwww! Thanks so much for the gift! ^___^ I like your use of the Maya art!
You're welcomeyou'rewelcomeyou'rewelcome. Feel free to request anytime~ :D

(Same feeling, here.)

Randomness is good; it keeps life interesting.

Caelestis: Haha, sorry~ ^^;
It's definitely an interesting and fun topic; I'm glad to have chosen it for my initial research topic in the fall semester.
Things.. are somewhat better. There are still a ton of things that need to be improved, unfortunately. At least we're not stuck in this "damsel-in-distress" phase, though. :)

Haha, it would be wishful thinking (for me, anyways) to have a "Women in Video Games" course. I guess it would be cool because it would be interdisciplinary.. perhaps a bit of women's studies, history, psychology mixed in? o__o'

I've definitely experienced that "sluggish" phase. It sucks when you get that artists' block or whatever >__>;;
I used to draw a lot.. not anymore. I tend to be hypercritical of my work and it never ends well. After that, I simply lost motivation. Nowadays, I randomly get moments of inspiration to draw a particular thing (chibi, etc.) but most of the time I just put it off or run out of the initial motivation I had.

I think it's good to do these "low-key" things like reading or playing video games as long as they're not interfering with your schoolwork or any other responsibilities. I've had those moments, and it was nice to relax.

I've ALSO experienced those ADD moments... it's crazy. XD It can also be annoying because you may want to focus on one particular thing but just can't do it.

So.. um.. that's my advice, I guess? I know it's not very helpful, heheh. ^^; Don't feel so alone in your experiences. :]
