Papermario: Haha, that's crazy about the hotel.
Do you have a lot of finals and exams? You may be able to raise your grades if you have some more opportunities during exam time.

Good luck on yours, too! :)

Jenna: I think I know the Jake/Lana picture that you're referring to, and yes, big fan of her work!
(Oh my goodness, I love the one you linked to as well!)

Yeah, I figured that's the advantage/disadvantage of being an English major as well. In Psychology, it's mostly multiple-choice exams because the classes are unfortunately too big for frequent writing assignments. However, there is an entire class devoted to obtaining the skills necessary to be able to write a research paper/article using the science model (intro, method, results, discussion), so at least we get our dose of writing practice.

I love writing so I don't mind writing assignments at all. Being a women's studies major, I get a good amount of assignments that involve writing and critical thinking about what we read for the class. :)

I actually don't think I'm a "paper person" or a "multiple-choice person." Usually, people like one more than the other, but since my performance is fairly consistent on both types of exams, I don't really have a solid preference. Both exams can be easy depending on the course and material, and both exams can be difficult depending on the situation as well. I once took a multiple-choice exam and got a super low score because I had studied the wrong material. I haven't gotten such a low grade on any writing assignments, but it goes to show how multiple-choice is not necessarily always easier (which some people may assume since you have a chance of getting it right by guessing).

Anyways, I've done well on both types, thank goodness. :)

Trombone:
No problem, let me know if you need anything else! :)

Gray Godot: Oh, okay! Yeah, you're considered a freshman, going to be a sophomore, but four years goes by SO QUICKLY. o__o'' It goes to show that life passes you by in a flash, so appreciate everything you have at the moment and appreciate those around you (friends, family, and so on).

Aw, I love video game themes as well. I have sonic "invincible" theme as my ring tone (my previous cell phone was sonic-themed and came with sonic themes already on the phone!). In addition, I played LittleBigPlanet a few weeks ago and I'm listening to the music nowadays. :)

Spoiler: HUGE ARGUMENT (Impossible to condense a thirty-page paper into a small paragraph! Skim at most!)
My thesis on video games was simple and straight-forward: The portrayal of female characters in video games (not all, of course) is problematic because women are often hypersexualized or they represent very traditional female stereotypes (passivity, damsel-in-distress).

My conclusion is huge (so I'm gonna try to condense it). I critique the common solution that people give: "Well, more women should just enter the video game industry and then this will be fixed!" I argue that this isn't the cure-all solution and it's not as easy as it may seem because video games, in general, are marketed primarily to men and as children, little girls may be told that video games are for boys, not girls. This is somewhat changing, but there is still a need for improvement.
In addition, Valve (Half-Life 2, Portal, Left4Dead) have 85 employees listed on their website and only five employees are women. Only 1-2 women are involved in the actual game development process while the rest are in non-development positions like human resources.

My argument concerning Valve: Women are not hypersexualized in the games that Valve produces, yet there's VERY few women in the company. This illustrates that to improve portrayals of women, we need open-minded, mature individuals who do not simply believe that "sex sells" (because it only sells to a point). Valve would not be as successful as they currently are if the only thing that worked was including random sexual portrayals in a game. Alyx Vance has personality and she's a far cry from being simply there for eye candy purposes, which is what a lot of games do with regards to portraying women as big boobs, hardly any clothing, no character development/personality/etc. Zoey in L4D wears NORMAL clothing, appropriate for a zombie invasion (not a bikini or exaggerated breast physics) and she's seen as equal to the other players because each character is equal in running speed, etc.

I also talk about how many men/women are defensive of these portrayals, claiming "it's just a game." Well, it's repeatedly been shown that the mass media influences how we may think. This is not to say that it controls our every thought and action, but it CAN affect our ideals in some way or another. It does matter that these issues exist. Unfortunately, (and this is outside the scope of my presentation), these portrayals of women are prevalent in all mass media (tv, magazines, comics...), so it's a bigger problem.

Asaki: Ahh.. I see what you mean about the wine taster comparison.
I'll catch up on your review later! :)

I think the Jake/Lana picture circulated around a bit, but it's a awesome piece (like almost all her stuff) so I was glad to see it did. I really love the fact that like 85% of her PW art is Rise from the Ashes stuff (my personal favorite case.)

It's always good if you can do well on both. I don't have a personal preference myself and I do fine on both types of tests (though a test of all essays really sucks, my 101 english final consisted of 5 full length essays in a 2 hour period) , but my main problems with collegiate english papers is that the topics most time are not of one's own choosing and are a bit harder to write. I have a hard time writing something I don't like or really agree with. I mean I can, and do, but it makes me sort of ambivalent about the whole academic writing thing.

Multiple choice is something that crops up pretty regularly in English too, not as much as the essays, but for the survey courses that cover a large time-frame use it as a way to make sure you're keeping up on everything. I really don't find them easier than the essays, the difference to me is that essays tend to take up more time (particularly the in-class ones, where you've got a time crunch) whereas if you know the material, you can blow throug ha multiple choice test pretty quickly.

Sure, I'll add you to the waitlist for a tag. I haven't come across many quality pictures of Luke, so I may request a different character if I run into difficulties. Do you mind if Layton's in it, too? The standard picture of them both is good quality, which is why I'm asking.

Congratulations about being so close to 500 posts, by the way.

My WST 398 midterm and final are all writing, but nothing like five full-length essays. Still, they require lots of studying and preparation since we're expected to know definitions of specific terms and such.

I know what you mean. I absolutely hate boring papers, which probably explains why my grades were mediocre in high school. In college, I had so much freedom with choosing topics so it was easier to express my passion for my chosen topic and therefore, make a more convincing argument.

I didn't know that there were multiple-choice exams in English; that's interesting to know! Do they test on the readings (e.g. questions about the plot or themes)? I had that sort of format for one of my introductory courses.. it was called sexuality in literature and was very interesting, but some of the readings were meh.

I just found out that the Department Chair wrote a letter of recommendation and sent it to the District Office. I hope that something comes up soon because waiting to hear from people can be tiresome. Oh well, I'll do what I must to get a job.

I like essay exams better because your knowledge of the subject can shine through better. Also, if you don't know a lot, you can make sure to answer the questions as best as possible and you don't have as much risk as if it were a multiple choice exam with the same information. That's just me though.

Wallpaper request if you please:

Color Scheme: Pink and other dark colors to match him.

It really doesn't which I've never really understood (but that may just be my bias for Rise From the Ashes talking XD).

Memorizing specific terminology can be a pain, but it's a lot more clear cut in a way. For my essay tests, it's just making sure to come to lecture and do all the reading since the essays tend to want you to tie 3-5 texts we covered into the general argument which ends up being a much more nebulous task.

In JC english was much more "hey, write on a topic of your choosing just run it by he prof. first". Here at UCSB, it's been much more limiting, most of the time you get a list of prompts and just get to pick one. Every once in a while I'll find one I really like (like the influence of Noir on Cyberpunk, which was a topic I got for my Sci fi class last quarter), but most of the time it's kind of a "which one can I tolerate more?" sort of a choice.

Yeah, we do have multiple choice. It tends to focus on key dates and figures of the times in the survey courses which over a broader period of time, but there's also some questions that cover themes, characters, settings, etc. Passage identification and short answers also tend to figure into exams a lot.

That sexuality in literature does sound rather interesting, out of curiosity, what texts were discussed?

Hey, sorry haven't posted in awhile! Our theatre play performed last weekend and is performing again this weekend, so have been very very busy!

Anyhow, I just wanted to say that I am hoping to take a 3D Game Design class this summer at a community college! (still in high school, but whatever XD). I do not know yet if this class will be too difficult for me, since apparently you need minimal knowledge on programming (or, it will at least help), but I'm going to try it the first week and see if it'll be too difficult. Let's hope not, though! The professor told me that many high school students had gone to this class and they did well, so let's hope I can do it, too!
Apparently, the class uses the TORQUE game engine, if that sounds at all familiar to anyone :yuusaku: I'm excited, though; I'm hoping to learn a lot and have some fun with it!

Anyway, just thought I'd put that out there. :edgy:

Baron: Could you please provide hi-res pictures of Luke?

I don't know that many songs from Ayumi, but I'll look those up.
It doesn't sound stupid or arrogant, it's a legitimate thing to be proud of/excited about. :)

Jenna: Nice to learn about what the English major generally involves.

Hm.. I'll try to remember.
Written on the Body, Venus in Furs (Leopold von Sacher-Masoch), Romeo and Juliet, Symposium, The Lover (Marguerite Duras), Portnoy's Complaint... I think I'm missing one or two. I took this class in Fall 2005 so my memory is a bit hazy; had to Google some of the titles.

Caelestis: I'm so glad to hear that you'll be taking 3D game design! I would be interested in that sort of class as well :) Good luck with it, and hopefully you won't find it impossible. I believe you'll do well.
No need to apologize about being busy; I know the feeling. o__x; I'm not even thinking that much about graduating yet because I still have a lot of work to complete.

I'm tired because today, we had to attend a research convention where we simply stand near our research posters and answer any questions people may have. I was actually expecting lots of criticism since my topic was about female representations in video games; specifically, I was expecting people to respond with, "IT'S JUST A GAME!!!!!!" or some excuse similar to that.

I actually had at least three people stop by and we had great discussions on the issue in games and how to take steps to improve portrayals of women. I'm so happy to have found support and to have raised awareness about the issue. :) It was a great experience!! Needless to say, I'm extremely happy and proud.

Fun times, I know. XD

Totally okay, I was just curious because my secondary major is in Medieval Studies, so I'm sort of limited to that period in regards to the classes I take. The closest I'd get to any of that material is probably the Women in Medieval Lit class I need to take next fall.

Like any program worth its code, it runs really well, provided you have enough memory. It works near-perfectly, except when Windows Vista is being Windows Vista and sucking the way it does, messing everything up. When runing tables, though, it depends on the code put in by the replicator of the table (that is, the person converting it to PinMAME format.)

A frequent problem that arises with this particular rendition of Theatre of Magic, though, is that when you press a flipper early enough the ball just goes under the flipper, as if it were flat. That takes away from the reality of it, as that's just physically impossible on a pinball machine. There are other versions of the same game, but the other one didn't look as good, and the other wouldn't work, period.

Other tables I have (like Funhouse, PIN*BOT, Black Rose) are practically carbon copies of the real thing. The physics work a little better on those, but the ToM table is near-seamless as well - just that annoying "flat ball" thing. Speaking of Black Rose, I've been playing it a bit more and growing to enjoy it (although it still gets old kinda fast and isn't anything special, except for the sound.) I'm going to a party Sunday where BR is - can't wait to play it again.

------

I would really like to request two PSP wallpapers (since I finally cleared the dust off it after buying FFI and MGS: Portable Ops Plus, not to mention the Williams Pinball Collection - that's a given.) After checking them over again, they're tall orders, and I feel pretty bad about that. Take your time. I'm being really specific, but that's more for your convenience so you don't have to worry about whether it came out OK or not. But you're the Vickinator, and you're just that good, so I have faith in you.

Spoiler: first request
The first:

Dimensions: 480 x 272
Text: For those who believe, no explanation is necessary, for those who do not, none will suffice.

Images: http://www.court-records.net/animation4 ... mal(a).gif <-- Young Valant's normal sprite.
http://theadventurouswriter.com/blog/wp ... -lucky.jpg <-- Four aces.
http://www.latimes.com/media/photo/2007-11/33764113.jpg <-- Stock magic poster.

I'd like you to work the last two images into the background somehow; knowing you it'd look way cool so I'll let you go about how you're gonna do it.

Color scheme: Anything befitting Valant. I'll leave it up to you.
Extras: Anything magic-looking, really, although you probably won't have room for much because the background is rather involved...just some stars, swirls, usual grungey stuff. I'd love to see what you can do with it.

Spoiler: second request
Now here's the specs for the second wallpaper. I've been listening to Joan Osborne lately and I wanted a Lamiroir wallpaper based upon her song "Spider Web" in which a girl has a dream about Ray Charles, whose sight returned in exchange for his singing voice. Kind of like a young Borginian girl dreaming that Lamiroir could see but not sing. Hrmm.

Dimensions: 480 x 272
Text: I dreamed about Ray Charles last night...and he could see just fine.

Images: http://www.court-records.net/animation4 ... 28a%29.gif <-- Lamiroir.
http://www.court-records.net/animation4 ... 28a%29.gif <- Thalassa.
http://www.fineartphotoblog.com/wp-cont ... ch-800.jpg <-- Night sky w/building. It's big enough for you to just focus on just the stars.

Put Lamiroir and Thalassa on opposite ends. It would be cool if you could put "I dreamed about Ray Charles last night" near Lamiroir, and then put "...and he could see just fine" near Thalassa - for reasons that should be obvious to anyone who's played 4-4.

Color scheme: Pretty and blue. Again, I'll leave it up to your judgement as to what blues you should use; I know you'll work magic with it.
Extras: Swirls, grungy stuff - not too many more stars. It'd be cool to incorporate some a small spider web in the corner, considering the song's called Spider Web and all.

Good luck with those. That took a LONG time to type up. I sincerely hope it's not too big a burden for you, because I know this is gonna be awesome. *high fives* Any problems, or if I'm TOO specific, tell me, and I'll try to correct myself as soon as I can. :phoenix:

Thank you once again!!!

This is freaking awesome, Vicki. As soon as my husband stops playing his game on the laptop, I'm loading this one there. I hope you don't mind, but I would like to show this image to the Makoto fan thread (with credit to you of course).

It's just perfect.

Lunaria: Glad you like! It was fun to work on it, just as expected in the beginning. :)
I don't mind posting it in the Makoto thread at all! Nothing ever wrong with spreading the love for a new character.

Asaki: Good to hear it works well.
Hm.. but are any of the developers interested in fixing that particular problem?
Have fun at your party on Sunday, by the way! :)

Of course, Asaki. Sure thing to your requests! I've never had the chance to make any PSP wallpapers before. :)
I don't think anything is too specific... I can usually work with what I get in my own way. I'll definitely touch base with you if anything doesn't work as planned.

Baron: Aw, that's true. "Come Back to Me" would remind me of Miego, too!

I have no clue whether they're intent on fixing it or not; if I knew VB maybe I could patch it up myself...but alas, I don't, and thus I remain clueless.

Visual PinMAME consists of two programs: Visual Pinball, which is the table programmed and run with Visual Basic script, and PinMAME, which is the scoreboard/dot matrix display. They function together. The scripting is done in Visual Pinball. When I open it, it says the code is just fine. But it'd truly be a o__O moment if the ball just snuck under your flipper when playing ToM (or any other pinball machine) for real.

And thank you for taking my requests yet again~

Is it wierd that I like a game not for it's gameplay but for its art style? That game for me is Eternal Sonata. :edgy:

I don't really know about ES, all I know is that it's pretty. The story does sound interesting, though. The only reason I wouldn't play it is that it's an RPG, I've never really gotten into RPGs.

I'm closing the tag request; for those who have replied, Papermario, Amy, and Selom, I'll be making your tags throughout the next week or so, depending on if you're on the waitlist right now, etc. :)

Just a question... why such a steep price for that promotional item? Is it because it's like a "limited edition", promotional thing? o__o;

No, but I have a really good friend who is. When he gets out of high school, he's going to be a computer science major. He spent his whole summer learning VB and all that kind of stuff, and he still retains that knowledge now. He's one of the few people from my grade school that I still talk to in high school, which is fortunate because he's very, very awesome.

Oh! And I just found this bit on Theatre of Magic's development that I found interesting. Maybe you will too.

Spoiler: From Pinside
A Pinside.com user wrote:
According to the Book the "Pinball compendium - 82 to present" by Micheal Shalhoub, this game was originally planned to be called "David Copperfields Magic" , but after Mr Copperfield pulled out of the deal they needed to find another name for it, and quickly! A number of names were shortlisted, including "The Magic Theatre", which as you'll know, finally ended up as "The Theatre of Magic"

Personally, i would of totally been put off the game if it had Mr Copperfields big nose (and hair) constantly staring at you when you play!!! TOM is a timeless, mysterious and almost sinister name for it. very cool.

My mom always says things happen for a reason, and Copperfield pulling out of the deal is one of them. I don't think the game would have half the fanbase it does now if it was a licensed Copperfield vehicle. I mean, it's very tough to come up with original ideas for any kind of game, let alone pinball machines. Stern makes pinball games based upon licensed properties (their newest is 24) and they are the only pinball manufacturer in business today (Bally and Williams went under in 1999; Gottlieb closed its doors in the 80's.) I LOVE Stern's Lord of the Rings machine though.

ANYWAY! The way Bally recovered from Copperfield's dropping out was incredible - they'd have to create a new backglass, characters, stories. And that's how we have ToM and our beloved Busty Immortal, the butt of many inside jokes of ours. I wouldn't have it any other way.

off topic: THE BLACK ROSE MACHINE AT THE PARTY WAS BROKEN. Isn't that nice? :<
However, I am very close with the Diner's owner, and she told me the arcade guy comes every week or so. I put in a suggestion for her to ask about Theatre of Magic, and she said she'd ask him at the first opportunity. When I asked her to make sure she didn't forget, she actually told me that she already wrote down the suggestion. At this point, I am crossing my fingers so tightly that they may or may not stay like that forever. If the guy follows through or somehow gets one out of storage...

SCOOOOOOOOOORE!!!!!!!!!

That's so awesome to hear! It's nice to see that his knowledge has seeped into your brain as well. You sound very knowledgeable!

Visual novels (Ace Attorney, Hotel Dusk, Another Code), Music/Rythim (Elite Beat Agents, Ouendan, Taiko no Tatsujin), Any game with an interesting pepherial (EyeToy, Time Crisis) and any game that has an interesting story. I also like to play retro games now and again. :phoenix:

Hey guys, dropping in for a quick update since my Medieval Studies class is cancelled. Things have been a bit wild lately, had two midterms back to back last friday (which sucked) but I'm sort of in the clear now. The other source of craziness (though, luckily it hasn't affected me directly) is there's a fire up in SB proper that's forced a lot of people to evacuate, so classes have been kind of slap-dash. Luckily the campus is pretty close to the beach and I live just off campus, so I'm pretty safe.

Has anyone been injured? My sincere sympathies for those who had to evacuate. :/ My friend lives in an area that's prone to forest fires >__<;

Baron: I like rhythm games, too. :) I've played all three you listed. I just introduced my classmate to Taiko and she's now addicted.

Nice song. :)

I only have one more class left, woohoo!
I had an internship interview today and will probably have three internships over the summer. :)
Umm.. besides that, I'm beginning to study for finals. o__x;

OMG, those are amazing! Thank you soooo much! I loved how you used the images too.

Glad you're crossing your fingers! But it's not just for me now. ToM dropped to #6 on the top 10. I retract what I said about pinballers having good taste...*sigh*

I'm both sick and grounded, so I'm typing this out on my PSP (which now looks amazing <3). Thanks again!

I love Konami's Japanese rhythm games. My favorite is Pop'n Music, I have a lot of the console ports. DDR was super awesome until SuperNOVA CS.

Three finals in one day? Ouch that really sucks, I can barely handle two myself. The thing that was killer about my midterms though was that I had to run all the way across campus in under 10 minutes after the first one finished. The tests themselves weren't too bad, it was the dash and taking a test right after that that just killed me.

There's been three firefighters injured, but no civilian injuries that I know of. The wind's been changing over the past couple of days, so the fire's been spreading. They expanded the evacuation area yesterday, though. Fires here in SB are kind of a regular thing for some strange reason (you really wouldn't think a costal town next to the California Costal range wouldn't get fires that often) so the authorities are really on top of it. I'm lucky that I'm so close to the actual shoreline and well out of range of the fire.
