I have to disagree, I used plenty of tutorials back then (and still do for some things) and it's funny when you reach to point when it becomes second nature, you're just blasting with those signatures. In a way, I would argue it's subconscious-like when you begin to understand blending and composition. You still made it, and it turned out good; it shows something.
Smudging helps because it works with complementing (not complementary) colors of similar shades/hues as well as subtly working on focus with foreground and background. (Photography really helps, hehe.) That's like my turning point there

So, late comment by me. Heh, yeah, eventually it will. Smudging is awesome, you just need to know how to deal with the strength and brush settings (especially the scatter setting).
Well, photography helps you understand three things. Foreground, background, and the focus. Basically some art theory, without the words. You will understand how contrasts help enrich your image and how colors seamlessly blend with each other with the three mentioned above. Also you will learn one "core" concept and that would be rule of thirds, basically understanding placement of the focus in order to achieve wonderful aesthetics.

Smudging does look fantastic. Usually.
I used to do art... theory was alright. Although we didn't do much about photography, but I wish we did. Photography sounds cool, though.
