You can clearly see, the person who held Trucy at knifepoint is Professor Layton himself.
After getting sick of three games worth of puzzles, he decided to go to America and start a killing spree.



Luckily Apollo kicked Layton in the area, took his knife, presented it as evidence and the situation was handy dandy when Layton would GTFO and stop killing if Apollo could solve his super duper hard puzzles.
Capcom censored this (by changing the plot) in the game though! =(
