Phoenix, Larry and Edgeworth sat next to each other in the school hall as more and more students began to fill up the rows of chairs; the traditional start-of-term assembly was infamous for being totally boring. The teachers were sat up on the stage; Mr Von Karma looked as terrifying as ever, and Mr Gant, the deputy headmaster (and chemistry teacher), was staring at everyone over the top of his pink glasses. Dr Grey, the dull biology teacher, was trying to stop his own glasses from falling off.
‘Why can’t he just get some glasses that fit properly?’ Phoenix whispered to Larry, who shrugged. Mrs Oldbag happened to walk past at that moment, and yelled at them to be quiet.
Phoenix turned his attention back to the stage. The French teacher Mr Armstrong was flexing his muscles at Mr Misham the art teacher, who twitched his nose and looked unimpressed. Ms Vasquez, who taught history, was smoking her pipe whilst the geography teacher Mr Payne tried to strike up a conversation, without much success. The grouchy sports teacher Mr Kudo was sat next to the ICT teacher Miss Basil, who was trying to avoid getting hit by the seeds he seemed to constantly throwing, whilst also trying to dodge Ms Fey the RE teacher’s large, poofy black hair. Ms Bikini, the DT teacher, was sat on the end of the row, her cheeks wobbling as she laughed at nothing in particular. In front of the stage, Dr Hotti was skulking around, eying up the female students. Since he was only the school doctor, he wasn’t considered important enough to sit with the teachers, but he was still expected to be there for the first assembly of the school year.
Suddenly there was a loud throat clearing, and Principal Judge stepped out onto the stage. The teachers and students all fell silent.
‘Welcome to another wondrous school year at St Lawfords!’ he began. Larry groaned as he pulled out a long reel of paper with his customary start-of-year speech written on it. ‘It is good to see so many bright, happy faces eager to learn. I hope that this year will be one of prosperity and enlightenment…’
Phoenix slumped back in his chair, beginning to daydream as the headmaster’s speech droned on in the background. The sound of doors swinging open made him sit up straight; the Year Sevens were being led into the hall.
‘Whoa, those year seven girls are real cuties!’ Larry whispered, watching as a long trail of boys and girls followed the head girl Lana Skye, and sat down in the front few rows of the chairs in the hall.
‘Aren’t they a little young for you, Larry?’ Edgeworth whispered.
‘Pretty girls can never be too young, Edgy!’
Maya gasped as she walked into the main hall, with Ema close behind her.
‘Wow! It’s so huge!’
She looked around the gigantic hall, which was filled with unfamiliar faces. Mia was sat on one of the back rows with the other year elevens, but Maya managed to catch her eye and she gave her a small smile.
Ema’s big sister Lana directed them towards the front row of chairs, and they sat down, feeling the eyes of the rest of the school burning on their backs. Maya turned around slightly and saw a lanky, spiky-haired boy watching them. He winked as he saw Maya looking at him.
‘Larry! She’s a bit young to be your girlfriend!’ Maya heard a boy with spiky black hair whispering. Another smartly-dressed boy with greyish hair was next to them; he smirked at them both.
‘Greetings to all the new students here at St Lawfords!’ said a man with a bushy grey beard who was in the centre of the stage, ‘As I’m sure you are aware, I am the headmaster, Principal Judge.’
Lana got up on the stage to stand with the head boy, a strange young man with purple hair and dazzling jewellery.
‘This is the head boy Redd White and head girl Lana Skye. They are here to help any new student who gets lost or has a problem, so don’t feel afraid to ask them if you’re in trouble,’ Principal Judge continued, gesturing towards Lana and Redd. Both of them smiled; Redd’s white teeth seemed to flash and sparkle when he opened his mouth.
‘So, now that all the new students are here, I’d better continue with my speech!’ The headmaster coughed, and then started waffling on about motivation and education. Maya wasn’t listening, and was glad when the speech finally finished. Mr Judge sat down, and a tanned, grey-haired man in an orange suit stood up.
‘To all of those who don’t know me, I am Mr Gant, the deputy headmaster. Great speech by the way, Udgey! Now, Reddo is going to read out your names in alphabetical order, and you will come up to collect your new timetable from Lana.’
Maya tried not to laugh at Mr Gant’s weird nicknames.
‘Ooh, a timetable! I can’t wait!’ Ema whispered excitedly. Maya didn’t really see what was so great about a timetable; she was just worried about the embarrassment of going up on the stage to collect it.
‘Once you have received your timetable, you must head off to lessons immediately,’ said Mr Gant. He handed a long list of names to Redd White, who began to read them out.
Phoenix was practically asleep by the time Mr Judge’s speech ended. Edgeworth nudged him when Mr Gant stood up.
‘They’re giving out timetables,’ he hissed.
‘Oh,’ Phoenix said, ‘This is so boring! I hate being a Wright!’
Since his surname was near the end of the list, Phoenix always ended up sitting around until nearly everyone had gone.
‘Aw, I wish I was at the end of the alphabet!’ said Larry, ‘Then I could see all the cute girls getting their timetables!’
He wolf-whistled as Adrian Andrews went up onto the stage. She glared at him.
‘Berry, Regina,’ said Redd. A blonde haired girl with bright blue eyes got up to get her timetable.
‘Man, she is SO cute!’ Larry gasped, ‘I’m gonna ask her out at break time!’
‘She’s only a year seven!’ said Phoenix, ‘Year tens CAN’T date year sevens! It’s like… the law!’
Larry was about to answer when his name was called out. There was a small snigger throughout the hall at the word ‘Butz’, but Larry didn’t appear to notice. Edgeworth’s name was called out not long afterwards, and Phoenix was left alone. Matt Engarde… Terry Fawles… Phoenix watched intently as he heard the name ‘Fey’ being called out. He sat up straight, his eyes on the stage. A small, dark-haired girl got up and collected her timetable; this wasn’t what he’d been expecting.
‘Hey, is that gal Mia Fey’s lil sister or somethin’?’ Lotta Hart was saying from somewhere behind him. But Phoenix wasn’t listening, because the next name had been called out, and an angel was walking past him and up onto the stage.
Mia Fey.
He thought to himself that she’d got even more gorgeous over the summer, if that was even possible. To Phoenix, Mia Fey was a living perfection. Everything about her was stunning. She was in year eleven, and a model student, yet for some reason nobody teased her about being the teachers’ favourite, or about the fact she was head of the after-school debate club. Somehow she managed to look absolutely amazing in her school uniform, even though it looked awful on everyone else. She had a great figure, and the most gorgeous pair of legs. Phoenix couldn’t help staring as she walked past, in her usually fitted blouse and short skirt, with a pair of high heels on her feet. In fact, he could’ve sworn that she looked at him as she collected her timetable from Lana. He drank in every detail; her beautiful face, her brown eyes, her perfect lips, her shiny brown hair, the cream coloured scarf she always wore around her neck, her-
‘Phoenix, you just drooled on your tie,’ said Kristoph Gavin. Phoenix blushed, quickly wiping off the saliva and hoping not too many people had noticed him drooling at Mia Fey. But from the looks on their faces, it seemed that pretty much the whole school had noticed. He looked up; to his disappointment, Mia had already gone. He just hoped she hadn’t seen him dribble down his school tie…
‘Hehehe! He’s, um, gone, totally, like, bright red!’ Ini Miney said.
‘Oooh, naughty boy, I see you still have a huge crush on Mia Fey!’ April Maya giggled, ‘I bet he takes photos of her and pins them on his bedroom wall! He certainly looks like the pervy type!’
‘Shut up, April!’ Phoenix snapped, ‘You think you’re so great, but everyone knows you’re a slut!’
‘Heehee, calm down! Looks like someone’s getting a bit overexcited…’
‘May, April!’ Redd called.
She tapped Phoenix on the nose as she stood up. ‘Sorry, big boy, but I don’t think Mia Fey is gonna fall for YOU anytime soon!’
He blushed as he heard Ini Miney and Cindy Stone laughing behind him. But April was right… Mia Fey would never even think twice about a guy like him, especially since he was younger than her. But he just couldn’t help fancying her. The worst thing was, he felt like this was more than a crush… he was irreversibly in love with Mia Fey.
