Turnabout Attorney, Diego is trying to train Zeth to defend his clients in court. Zeth gives Diego's patience a run for his money tolerance wise however with his guilty verdict.
“I declare the defendant... Guilty.”
Smirking proudly to himself from behind the defence stand as his client was hand cuffed, and escorted out of court violently, Zeth Gant crossed his legs, and leaned back into his chair proudly. Beside him, his mentor, Diego Armando slumped his head into his hand, tapping the table loudly with his finger tips on his other. Noticing his mentor’s displeased stance, Zeth picked up Diego’s mug of coffee, swirling it around beneath his nose.
“Oh, cheer up you old grump,” Zeth grinned, resting the cup by Diego’s free hand, beckoning him to take a swig, “You know that bastard has done much worse in his time. I’ve shown you all the evidence. The guy was completely bent in the brain. I was doing him a favour with his 10 year sentence.”
“That’s not the point of a defence lawyer!” Diego growled, slamming his fist onto the table. Jolting back slightly at his mentor’s disposition, the smile left Zeth’s face, and turned into a serious look. “A defence lawyer is supposed to defend his client. Not pick and choose whether he thinks he deserves a not guilty sentence or not!” Grabbing his mug in frustration, Diego swung the mug up to his lips and sculled back the rest of his cup of black coffee. Zeth smirked gingerly, leaning on his palm against the table as Diego finished the mug all in one sitting. Tilting his head back forward to lean against the mug when he finished, he closed his eyes with a grim expression. Moments past, as he seemed to be fighting off a large headache, before his mentor finally let out a smirk, glancing aside to his trainee. With a quiet voice, he finally lightened his attitude, “You’re right though. He deserves much more than 10 years in jail. It’s just... you can’t keep playing Judge, jury, executioner, Zeth. You have alot of talent in becoming an incredible lawyer. You just need to start using that talent to believe in your client more. It was plainly obvious that he was innocent of that particular crime. I gave you this case because I thought you’d win for sure, yet you still turned the verdict around to guilty. I don’t know how or why you do it, but I wish you wouldn’t.”
“Justice has a dull blade, sir, and you know it,” Zeth frowned, leaning his cheek heavily into his palm in boredom. He had had this conversation so many times before now with all of his mentors before this one. “I’m serving a better justice taking this guy off the streets.”
“Him and your six other clients before him,” Diego pointed out, putting his cup down before rounding up Zeth’s paperwork for him, “You aren’t doing Grossberg’s Law firm any favours making all your clients guilty. Besides,” Reaching past Zeth, Diego grabbed the handle on his brief case, dragging it in front of the two of them. Popping the locks, he gave Zeth a half smile, “you’re only a little Kit in the game, Skunk. Don’t be so keen to prove yourself. You have plenty of time to practise your talents before you fight the big battles.” Giving Zeth a full smile briefly before he opened up the case, Diego placed the notes inside the bag neatly.
Sighing to himself as Diego’s arm rustled beside his ear, organizing the bag, Zeth lifted his shin onto the table in front of him and dipped his head sadly. Diego glanced back at his apprentice for a moment, smiling sadly.
He knew that Zeth never wanted to become a lawyer. His father had forced him all the way through law school with bribes and threats. Diego was his third tutor in law, and so far, all he had managed to do is get Zeth into court. It was a struggle to get him to defend his clients like a lawyer, rather than a vigilante. His last chance was to make careful use of the friendship that the two of them had developed over the few months Zeth had been there.
Closing the brief case finally with all the documents back safely where they belong, Diego turned to Zeth, who was now glancing aside thoughtfully. Giving the young lawyer a tap on the shoulder, Diego motioned his head towards the exit.
“How about you come with me to my house for a while. You look like you could use some company.” Glancing up at his mentor gingerly, Zeth tapped his knee cap with a run of his fingers a few times, watching his mentor’s expression suddenly become sullen at his silence. Examining his expression suspiciously for a moment, Zeth never seemed to fully trust those around him. Grinning suddenly, Zeth bolted into life, grabbing the brief case and his jacket as he quickly got out of his seat.
“Only if it comes with a game of poker.” Zeth grinned, forming a gun with his hand and ‘shooting’ Diego cheekily, “I’ll make my next verdict a ‘Not Guilty’ if you can win against me.”
“Law isn’t like that, Skunk!” Diego grinned helplessly, slapping his own face as Zeth scuttled towards the door. Pulling his hand away from his face as he watched Zeth almost bounce towards the exit positively, Diego’s grin turned into a serious look, as he rose out of his chair. “Darn kid, I’m never going to get a ‘Not guilty’ out of him at this rate…”
